Chapter 19

Saying goodbye to Reid, even for only one night, is so hard. I don’t like leaving him. He is my world. I’ve already said goodbye and I’ at the team plane now. I get out of my car and walk to the trunk. I open it and pull out my suitcase. Just as I pull out the last bag, Brandon walks up to me.
“Good morning.” He says.
“Morning.” I say.
“Let me help.” He says taking one of my bags and putting it over his shoulder. I shut the trunk. I take a couple of my bags and Brandon gets my suitcase.
“Enough stuff?” He asks.
“My laptop and work stuff.” I say. “Business trip.”
“Right.” He says. “I sometimes forget this is a job.”
“Understandable, its something you love.” I say.
“Yeah, it’s the best job.” He says with a huge smile on his face.
“It’s a good thing you’re not bad at it.” I say before bursting out laughing.
“Very funny.” He says. “Are you sitting with James on the plane?”
“I don’t think so.” I say.
“Oh really?” He asks looking kind of happy.
“Yeah, doesn’t he usually sit with Paul?” I ask.
“Usually.” Brandon says.
“Plus I need to do some work on the plane.” I say blushing a bit.
“Do you ever stop working?” He asks.
“Not really.” I say. “Did you want to sit together?”
“Sure.” Brandon says clearly trying to hide his excitement. I smile and shake my head at him. We check my bags and then we sit down at one of the tables. We talk about the game tomorrow night. After a couple minutes I see James come in. He stops to talk to a small group of the guys from the team by the door before coming over to where Brandon and I are sitting.
“Morning Beautiful.” He says before giving me a kiss. I glance at Brandon after he pulls away and Brandon is looking anywhere, but at us.
“Morning.” I say smiling as James takes a seat at the table.
“When did you get here?” James asks taking his hand into mine.
“About fifteen minutes ago.” I say. “Brandon helped me carry in my stuff.”
“That was really nice of him.” James says.
“Just helping out.” Brandon says forcing a smile. I could tell he was uncomfortable. “I’m going to get some coffee, do you guys want anything?”
We both told him that we didn’t want anything and he silently left the table.
“I’m going to sit with Paul on the plane.” James says.
“No problem.” I say. “I’m sitting with Brandon.”
“Oh really?” James asks.
“Yeah, I asked him a couple minutes before you got here.” I say. “I have a bit of work to do though.”
“Anything I can help with?” He asks.
“Actually yes.” I say.
“Really?” He asks looking excited that he can actually help me. I go into one of my bags and pull out a contract.
“Read and sign it for me?” I ask batting my eyelashes at him. He sighs.
“I thought I could proof read something for you.” He says.
“Nope, just sign.” I say innocently.
“Fine.” He says rolling his eyes.
“Thank you.” I say giving him a kiss. He quickly skims over the pages and signs at the bottom of the last page. “You didn’t even read it.”
“Did you read it?” He asks.
“Yeah.” I say looking at him with a bit of confusion.
“Then I don’t need to worry.” He says. I raise my eyebrow at him. “You’d tell me if there is anything that needs to be changed, wouldn’t you?”
“Yeah.” I say.
“Then no problem.” He says smiling. He hands me back the contract. I make a face at him. We talk a bit more about the work I have to do until its time to get on the plane. I find Brandon and we walk toward the plane together.
“Do you mind if we sit toward the back?” I ask.
“Anywhere you want.” He says.
“Okay good, I need a bit of quiet.” I say smiling up at him. We walk down the isle of the plane toward the back. Before we can get to two open seats Beau stops us.
“Alex.” He says.
“Yeah Beau?” I ask.
“Do you ever wear flat shoes?” He asks. All the guys around us look down at my shoes including Brandon. I start laughing.
“Not really why?” I ask.
“You’re going to break something.” He says. I shake my head.
“I’ve worn heels since high school.” I say. “I learned to walk in them because I’ve always been really short.”
“We can tell.” Beau says laughing. I roll my eyes at him and push Brandon toward the seats.
“Do you want the window?” He asks.
“Yes.” I say blushing. He starts laughing and stands out of the way so I can go into the row. I sit down at the window and look around the plane.
“What are you looking at?” Brandon asks.
“Just seeing who has a nicer plane.” I say.
“And?” He asks.
“Hands down, Pittsburgh.” I say.
“Good to know.” He says.
“What about you?” I ask.
“What about me?” He asks looking confused.
“Who has the better plane? Pittsburgh or Carolina?” I ask.
“Pittsburgh has the better everything.” He says winking. We both laugh. After about ten minutes the plane is about to take off. I get some of my work out of my bag. I plan on working the entire time to Detroit. It’s a really short flight, but we have to fly back in the morning because we play again at home on Sunday. This is the first away game of the season and I can’t wait to get to the hotel so I can Facetime with Reid.

--------------------------------

Once we get to the hotel and everyone is in their rooms I quickly pull out my phone and Facetime Reid. I sprawl across the bed and hit call. After a couple rings the call is answered. I see some shuffling then I see Reid’s face in the frame.
“Mommy.” Reid says with a huge smile on his face.
“Hi baby.” I say smiling back.
“What are you doing?” He asks.
“At the hotel before the game tonight.” I say. “What are you guys doing?”
“Playing with cars.” Reid says.
“That sounds like fun.” I say. I hear a knock on the door. I get up and walk toward the door.
“Who’s that?” Reid asks.
“I’m not sure, let’s find out.” I say. I open the door and Sid is standing there. “It’s Sid.”
“Sid!” Reid yells. Sid comes into my room and takes the phone from my hand.
“Hey little man.” Sid says.
“Sid.” Reid says again, this time a bit quieter.
“What’s up?” Sid asks.
“Cars.” Reid says holding up a car that Sid got him a week ago.
“Cool.” Sid says. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“See you.” Reid says. I take the phone back.
“I love you.” I say.
“Love you.” Reid says.
“Behave for Lily and I’ll see you tomorrow okay?” I ask.
“Okay.” Reid says. I blow him kisses and he giggles.
“Bye baby.” I say.
“Bye mommy. Bye Sid.” He says.
“Bye.” Sid says. Reid hangs up and I toss my phone on the bed. Sid smiles at me.
“He’s adorable.” Sid says.
“Thanks.” I say smiling.
“Hungry?” He asks.
“Yes.” I say. “Starving actually.”
“Want to get lunch?” He asks.
“Sure.” I say. I get my phone off the bed and grab my purse off the chair beside the bed. “Where should we go?”
“Do you want to go to the restaurant downstairs or do you want to go out and walk around?” He asks. I check the time on my phone. We have about two hours before the bus leaves for the rink.
“Let’s just grab something downstairs.” I say.
“Sounds good.” Sid says. We leave the room and walk toward the elevator.
“Have you seen James since we got here?” I ask.
“I think he went for a nap.” Sid says.
“Not surprising.” I say. Once the elevator comes we go downstairs to the restaurant. There are random little groups of guys on the team already sitting down and eating. Sid and I sit away from everyone where we can have a bit of privacy. I’ve been out with Sid before and usually in Pittsburgh people are good with not bothering him, but I’ve heard stories about him being in other cities. Once we order Sid looks like he wants to ask me something, but doesn’t know how.
“Is something on your mind?” I ask.
“Maybe.” He says. “How did you know?”
“You have this look you get when you really want to ask me something.” I say. He smiles.
“You caught me.” He says laughing. I laugh too.
“So what is it?” I ask.
“What’s going on with you and Brandon?” He asks.
“Nothing, why?” I ask.
“It seems like you guys have something going on between you.” He says.
“Why do you say that?” I ask.
“He was totally flirting with you the other night after that interview.” Sid says. “Then you guys sat together on the plane today.”
“We’re friends.” I say.
“Are you sure?” He asks.
“I like James, a lot.” I say.
“I know that.” Sid says.
“Then what’s the problem?” I ask.
“It seems like Brandon might like you, but I could be wrong.” He says. “Just be careful please.”
“Thank you for the advice.” I say. “This is why you’re my best friend.”
“Yeah don’t replace me.” Sid says.
“I never would.” I say.
“Good.” He says. After that we don’t talk about Brandon or James again. We talk about the upcoming game a little bit and about Reid. At the back of my mind I continue to think about what Sid was saying. I think back to the conversations that Brandon and I have had. Does he like me? I would have to be careful. I don’t want James to question our relationship again. I really like him.
