Public Relations

It had been just over a week since James and I broke up. Being at work together wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everyone knew by now that we had decided to end things, they just didn’t know why. James wasn’t ready for the team to know and I respected that. Somehow I had hid my pregnancy until I was in the fifth month. It wasn’t my place to tell anyone about this. That was James’ business. I’m just around to help with the press once it is time to make a statement.
I’m sitting in my office working on an update about the game from the night before when I hear a knock on my door.
“Come in.” I call. The door opens and Sid strolls in. I smile at him. He shuts the door behind him.
“You wanted to see me?” He asks sitting in the chair on the opposite side of the desk from me.
“Yes.” I say.
“About what?” He asks.
“A couple commercials that Sport Chek wants you to do.” I say. “If your interested.”
“Sure.” He says.
“Alright, I just need to get you to sign the contracts and then we can get you the scripts.” I say.
“Sounds good.” He says. I pull out his file for endorsements. I place the three contracts in front of him.
“Just read through these and sign where the sticky notes are.” I say.
“Alright.” Sid says. He starts reading the first contract as I get back to my work in front of me. It takes him around thirty minutes to finish all three and sign them all. In that time I get a couple of the things on my list done. I take the contracts and go over to the fax machine. I send them through while Sid talks about the game from the night before. I add comments where necessary.
“Is everything okay with you?” Sid asks.
“Yeah.” I say sighing.
“Don’t lie to me.” He says. I chuckle.
“Reid is going to stay with his dad at the end of the week.” I say.
“How long will he be gone?” Sid asks.
“A month.” I say.
“Wow, why?” Sid asks.
“Vancouver has a pretty easy schedule, a lot of home games or one night road trips so he can actually go stay with Brad.” I say. I was sad that Reid would be leaving for Vancouver, but at least we would be there a week after him so I could see him. I plan on spending every night with him after work this week.
“We’re going to be there in a couple weeks though.” Sid says smiling at me. I smile back.
“Yeah I’m looking forward to it.” I say.
“Really?” Sid asks.
“Yeah, I miss Brad.” I say
“Oh.” Sid says. He looks down. I study his reaction. He looks crushed.
“What’s wrong?” I ask. He looks at me.
“Nothing.” He says. I don’t say anything. I wait for him to continue because I know he will. Finally he does. “I didn’t know you guys were close still.”
“Sid, don’t worry.” I say.
“Worry about what?” He asks trying to play it off that he’s not jealous. I can tell he is though.
“Brad is my sons father. He’s also one of my closest friends.” I say. “He’s always been there for me. When I was pregnant he was there to help whenever he wasn’t on the road. He’s usually the first one I call when I have a problem. Well he used to be.”
“What does that mean?” He asks.
“I call you now.” I say. Sid smiles.
“Good.” He says. We sit in silence for a while. “I should get back downstairs.”
“You should.” I say. “I wouldn’t want to keep you from any team things.”
Sid laughed.
“Never.” He says. He stands and leaves my office without another word. I sit staring at the door for a couple minutes before getting back to work. I try to shake Sid from my mind as long as possible.

Today is the day Reid leaves for Vancouver. I’m so sad to see him go, but I know he needs to spend some time with his father. Plus I could use some time to catch up on work that I didn’t finish over the last week while we were spending time together. I would see him in a week when we went to Western Canada, but that seemed so far away. We were at the airport at the gate. I was saying my final goodbyes to Reid before they boarded the plane.
“Mommy loves you.” I say to Reid.
“Love you.” He says back kissing my cheek.
“We will Facetime all week and I will be there next week.” I say giving him a kiss on the head.
“Okay mommy.” He says giving me a hug. I smile. I stand.
“Have a good flight and call me when you get to Brad’s please.” I say to Lily.
“We will.” Lily says.
“Thank you.” I say.
“You’re welcome.” She says.
“Bye Sid.” Reid says giving Sid a hug. I smile.
“Bye bud, see you in a week.” Sid says.
“Okay.” Reid says.
“Let’s go Reid.” Lily says. “We don’t want to be late.”
“Bye baby.” I say giving him another hug and kiss. The two of them walk off toward through the gate to where they will board the plane. Sid puts his arm around me and I lean my head into him.
“We will see him soon.” He says. I sigh.
“I know I just love him.” I say.
“Understandable.” Sid says. I smile up at Sid.
“Thanks for driving us.” I say.
“Anytime.” He says. Once Reid and Lily are out of our sight we turn toward the parking lot. Sid still has his arm around my shoulder as we walk out to the car. He opens the door for me and I get in. I watch him walk around the front of the car and get in the drivers side. We drive back to my house in complete silence. It’s an off day so we don’t have to be anywhere. As we pull into my driveway I remember that I need a stack of papers from my office.
“Crap.” I say.
“What’s wrong?” Sid asks looking concerned.
“I need some paperwork from my office.” I say. “It’s fine I’ll go get it.”
“Let’s go together.” He says.
“Are you sure?” I ask. “You’ve already spent enough of your day.”
“I left the whole day open for you.” He says backing out of the driveway.
“Really?” I ask.
“Yeah, of course.” He says smiling. I can’t help but smile back.
“To Consol we go!” I say laughing. Sid laughs too. We talk about the upcoming games on the way over to the rink. For a little while I forget that a piece of me isn’t here. I just have a good time with Sid talking about the next slate of games to come.

Wow look at that... 2 updates in less than a week!!!!
Its crazy! Now that summer is actually beginning and I have an extra hour in the morning I can see this book getting finished in the next month or so ...
