Either You Do...Or You Don't

Allison’s POV:

I pulled my car into a parking space at the doctor’s office. It had been one week since I found out about Melanie and James…I hadn’t spoken to either of them since…Melanie had tried calling me almost every day…James…well…James hadn’t even attempted to call me or even text me…I had been over to his house once to get some things, but he wasn’t at home...also I had been staying with a friend that I had met at my job.

I headed inside and to the receptionist table, “Allison Dawning here to see Dr. Kovack.”

The receptionist typed on her computer and without looking up she handed me a form. “Fill this out while you wait. Your name will be called shortly.”

I grabbed the form from her hand and started filling out the papers. I had been having really bad cramps and some bleeding, which seemed off to me since I was pregnant, so I had made an appointment with my OB. I sighed and filled out the lines until the nurse called me back to the room.

“How are you feeling?” she asked

“I’m not sure…I’ve been having bad cramps and stomach pain and I’ve been spotting since yesterday…I’m just really nervous about the health of my baby.”

The nurse, whose name was Sandi, nodded. “Well check right up on that.” she replied, motioning for me to lie down on the table. I laid back on the table and took a deep breath as she lifted my shirt and placed the ultra sound on my stomach. “Mmm…”

“What?” I asked, feeling my hands shake nervously.

“I…I can’t find a heartbeat.”

James’ POV:

“So…you and Melanie had sex?” Paul asked as he sat beside me, playing CoD.

“Yep.” I replied

“And Allison found out?”

“Melanie told her when Allison confronted her, saying she suspected something. I don’t get why she’s so mad…I didn’t cheat on her.”

“Uh…probably because you fucked her best friend?” Paul suggested

“She had sex with Geno! That was cheating.” I argued

He shrugged, “I don’t man. I told you she was bad news. She’s crazy. It’s okay for her, but not you.”

“I don’t even know what we are…because she didn’t technically break up with me…she just said she wasn’t going to marry me…”

“I’d assume you’re broken up…” Paul started

“But she didn’t say that. She just said she couldn’t marry me because I lied to her…which is false. I didn’t lie…I just kept something from her.”

“I don’t know, man…I’d just call her…talk things out…if you want to be with her, make it work…” I sighed…that was the problem…I wanted to be with her, but at the same time I didn’t…

Allison’s POV:

“What do you mean…” I started…my heart sinking

“I can’t find the heartbeat…I…I’m afraid you’ve lost the baby.”

My heart stopped and before I could even speak, I just started crying…and I couldn’t stop. I had miscarried…to make things worse, my best friend wasn’t there to help me…I wanted to call her, but I doubt she’d even answer…and I knew James wouldn’t.

“Miss? Is there anyone you need to call? We need to do a procedure to…”

“Yes, I have to call someone.” I interrupted, grabbing my cell phone and giving her a look that meant I needed privacy. She nodded sympathetically and left the room. I took another deep breath and dialed the number of the one person who wouldn’t let me down…

“Hello?” his thick Russian accent greeted me

“Geno…it’s Allison…I…I’m at the hospital…I…I had a miscarriage…can you come here?”
