One Timers

Sidney Crosby

In the grand scheme of things, very few people have gotten the honor of holding the Stanley Cup over their heads and calling themselves the Champions. Very few people have won an Olympic Gold Medal. And very few people have won a World Championship. Put them together, and less than 30 people have won all three. They call it the “Triple Gold Club,” and last night my boyfriend of eight years finally became the newest member.

Everyone knew that Sidney Crosby would one day make it into the club. All he needed left was the World Championship gold medal, and with the way Team Canada played this year, it was a slam-dunk for him. Well-- I guess an empty net goal is the better comparison here.

“Proud” is the word that comes the closest to the emotion I’m feeling, but even that seems so inferior to reality. He never fails to impress me, taking each painful loss in stride and pushing on to bigger and better things. Getting eliminated from the playoffs this year was just as painful as every other year has been since 2009. We know that we have what it takes, but no matter how hard he and the rest of the guys work, we’ve come up short every year since then.

This World gold makes that loss hurt a little bit less, but it’s still there. It’s what makes me both terrified and excited to finally share the secret I’ve been hiding from him for the past few weeks. But first, I need something to eat. And he needs a cup of coffee.

“Sid.” I prod, shaking my boyfriend’s shoulder. He groans and rolls over a little in his sleep, grabbing at the pillow under his head. “Sid.” I shake him again. “Wake up.”

“Haley?” He mumbles, eyes fluttering open.
“Yeah babe.” I chuckle.
“What’s up?”
“You promised me breakfast.” I state, reminding him of his vow to take me to a little cafe that one of the other girlfriends told us about a couple days ago. The food isn’t exactly part of his diet plan, so he promised to go after the gold medal game.

I’m already dressed and ready to go, so twenty minutes later we’re ready to go. When we get there, I’m pleased to see that it is very cozy and not too busy. I really didn’t want a crowd around, interrupting our meal.

“Looks like we’ll get to spend some quality time just you and me.” Sid says, practically reading my mind.
“Definitely.” I smile.

We request a table outside, since it’s nice and warm, and privately discuss the win and the celebrations from last night while we’re being served. We both agree that it's beyond weird that we were actually celebrating with Claude Giroux and his Philly teammates last night. But, surprisingly, Claude isn't as bad as he seems. When he's not wearing an orange jersey, of course.

Our food gets delivered to us quickly, and the server fills our water glasses one more time before leaving us to ourselves. I let us both take a couple bites first before I decide to address the real reason why I made him bring me out to breakfast this morning.

“Hey, so Sid?” I start, nerves pooling together into a tight ball in my stomach.
“Yeah babe?” He smiles at me.
“Remember how we talked about like getting married and having a family and stuff?”
“Yeah.” He answers, taking a bite out of his gigantic waffle.
“And you said you wanted to win the year you had a baby so that you could put it in it?”
“Yeah....” I’ve definitely caught his attention now.
“Well if you win this year, you’ll get to have that...”

I take a deep breath, hoping he understands what I’m saying and is okay with the implications. Unlike most people, I have come to recognize every emotion that crosses Sid’s face. It’s both a blessing and a curse, since he tends to try to hide his emotions often and doesn’t like when I call him out on it. But, even with my “Special Sid-Detector,” as Geno calls it, I’m having a hard time figuring out what he’s thinking at this moment.

“Really?” He finally asks, a shake in his voice.
“Is-- is that okay?” I’m scared he’s going to say no. I’m scared he’s going to freak out and be angry with me.

“Is that okay?” He chuckles to himself, running his hand through his hair and taking a deep breath. “I’m going to be a dad.”
“Yeah.” I confirm, still without a clue as to what he’s thinking right now.
“Wow.” He sighs. “I’m-- I’m so happy right now.”

His face breaks out into a huge grin and suddenly I can read him again. I can tell he’s excited and that just fuels my excitement too.

“I’m going to be a dad.” He says again, with an even-bigger smile.
“Yeah, Sid.” I giggle.
“Shit.” He beams at me, like I’m the only person in the world.
“So... you’re okay with this?” I ask, knowing the answer but still wanting to hear it come from his mouth.
“Hales, we’re having a baby!” He says. “Oh my God of course I’m okay with this!”

I let out a huge sigh of relief, feeling the worry and stress melt from my muscles and bones. Sid laughs again and scoots his chair over so he’s closer to me. He places one hand palm-down on my stomach and uses the other to turn my head by my chin, pressing a sweet kiss to my lips.

“I’ve never been happier than this moment right now.” He admits.
“Really?” I ask, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes.
“Not when I was drafted. Not when we won the Cup. Not when we won the Olympics. Not last night. This right now is the best moment of my entire life so far.”

A coupe tears slip out, falling hot down my cheeks. He uses the hand on my chin to wipe them away.

“I love you, Sid.” I say.

“I love you too, Haley.”

Can you do a Henrik Zetterberg one shot, NC-17 and the scenario is that she's a new member of the training staff and they get some alone time in the locker room?

I've read all of these now (at least once, sometimes more lol) and the Sidney Crosby & Tyler Bozak arcs are incredibly good. We NEED Part 3's on those. Maybe Philly has to go to the All Star Game and manage Sid because he FINALLY agrees to go one year -but Giroux is also there.... oh man, angry threesome?? As for Bozak, surely lunch turns into afternoon delight. Surely! :) Keep it up, these are great!
