Looking Up

Future Plans

------Steve's POV

As the alarm clocks comes to life, I quickly reach over and switch it off trying not to wake Elle. She is wrapped around my chest with her legs sprawled out, and her light hair is twisted and frizzed- I can't help but to laugh at how cute it looks on her. She lets out a groan, "What time is it?"

"7am Bambi," I reply and stroke her back.

"Already?"

"Yes, I gotta get ready for the morning skate," I smile.

"I'll get the coffee started," she looks up at me and smirks. Elle crawls out of the sheets and heads towards the kitchen with just some underwear on and my Flyers t-shirt; George lets out a muffled sigh and follows her to beg for some breakfast. Once I get dressed and brush my teeth, I head out to Elle and get some breakfast.

"So what do you have planned for today?" I ask as I wrap my arms around her and rest my head on her small shoulder.

"Going down to my parents- Aunt Kate insisted that I take the day off," she says, popping a strawberry into her mouth.

"Mind if I come along?" I reply and steal a couple raspberries off the counter. She turns around and gives me a surprised look, "Really?"

"Yeah I haven't seen your dad in a while and I need to go with you- make up for all the times that I rudely didn't."

"Steve, I told you not to feel bad about it."

"I know, but I still do. So can we go after my morning skate?"

"Yeah sure, I'd love to," she smiles sweetly, "Can I come to the morning skate with you? I haven't in a while."

"Absolutely," I say and kiss her forehead.

"I know we already invited over the guys for Thanksgiving and all but do you think they'd mind if my parents come?" she asks warily biting into her toast.

"No not at all, they love your dad! How bout I ask my parents about coming? I'm sure they'd love to meet them," I rub her back as I smear cream cheese onto my bagel.

"Really? That'd be awesome," Elle smirks, "I'm just terrified about how much food we're going to have to make! I know the Schenn boys can eat a mountain of food," she laughs.

"Don't worry we'll get everything at the store next week to start preparing," I say before taking a sip of coffee.

"Sounds good," she takes her last bit of toast and heads into the bedroom to change for the practice.

-----Elle's POV

"Ellie!" I hear Sean yell from down the hallway.

"Hey!" I shout back, with a big smile on my face.

"What about me Coots? What am I chopped liver?" Steve whines jokingly and we all laugh. Steve gives me a kiss on the forehead, tells me he'll be back soon, and heads into the locker room to change. Sean is already dressed head to toe in his hockey gear, the only thing he's missing is his helmet. We talk about Thanksgiving plans with some of the other guys before they have to go out on the ice; once they do, I find a spot in the stands with some fans.

When practice is over and Steve and I meet in the parking lot, he tells me that all the guys are looking forward to seeing my dad again.

"Do they know?" I ask cautiously.

"Know what?"

"That he's sick. It's just... he looks a lot different than when you saw him- skinnier and paler," I hesitate and look out of the window.

"I'l let them know don't worry," he says stroking my hand.

On our way to my parents, house we find out that Steve's mom and dad will be joining us for Thanksgiving. By the time we get there, it is just before lunch time. When we walk into the house, it's quiet but I hear my dad coughing in the bedroom and my mother trying to help him, asking if he's okay. I was wary about Steve coming today since my father has been getting worse as the weeks go by- I knew I was going to eventually have to stay down here to help my mother take care of him.

When my mom greets us, I can tell she hasn't been getting any sleep in days, but she still wears a big smile on her face for us.

"I'm so glad you two could visit, your father was excited about you coming this time Steve," she says after she hugs Steve.

"Well I'm glad, I'm sorry I couldn't come down. This season has just been really busy."

"Oh stop! We know you're busy sweetie," my mom smiles.

We all sit down at the kitchen table for a while and talk about the upcoming holidays. It doesn't take much convincing to get my mom to agree to drive to Philly with my dad so we can have our Thanksgiving dinner with them and all of the guys.

"Aaand Steve's parents are coming so you'll get to meet them!" I say excitedly knowing it would cheer up my mom.

"Oh! Great! I've been wanting to meet them for so long!"

"They're excited about meeting you guys too," Steve chimes. My mom smiles and appears genuinely happy- a look I haven't seen on her face in a while. She looks towards me and holds her hand in mine. "Now, are you two hungry?" she asks after looking at the time. The both of us nod and decide to order some takeout from a nearby restaurant. After we order, we hear my dad groan and call out for my mother and she quickly rushes in.

-----Steve's POV

Walking into the house and seeing her mom look so distressed made me feel even worse for not coming with Elle the couple of times I actually could. A few minutes later after her mom is talking with Mr. Bostic in the bedroom, she helps him to the sofa in the living room where we can all talk to each other.

"What are you waiting for, Ellie get over here give me a hug," he laughs. She runs over and gives him a tight long hug- I can't imagine how she feels right now.

"Steve! Good to see you!" he cheers and I shake his hand.

"Good to see you too sir!" I say as Elle and I grab a set next to him. For a while, we just tell him about everything that is going on like hockey and how Elle's doing at work. Once we tell him about the plans for Thanksgiving, he seems even more happy than he already was- which seemed impossible. It was amazing to see him smiling and talking so much despite how he really was heath wise.

"It's time to pick up the food! Steve wanna go?" Elle asks. Before I can answer, Mr. Bostic speaks up, "Why don't you and your mother go- give me some time with Steve? I never get to see him!" he chuckles and weakly pats me on the shoulder. I smile back at him and I can feel my palms start to get sweaty- I've never been alone with her dad and I don't know why I was getting so nervous- he was the nicest guy on the planet.

"Alright! Be back soon!" Elle yells as she steps out the door just before giving me a wink.

"So sir, is there anything you want to watch?" I ask trying to avoid an awkward silence.

"No thanks- and what did I say about calling me sir? You're makin' me feel old!" he chuckles, "I actually wanted to talk to you about something, kid," he says softly and I swallow hard and I nervously pull at my fingers.

"Yeah sure," I say as I turn towards him so I am facing him more.

"Well, it's obvious I don't have a lot of time left- it'll be a miracle if I make it to Christmas but I have every intention of being there for Thanksgiving. It breaks my heart I might not be there for her birthday this year." I nod before he continues on, "I know that you both deeply care for each other- I can see it with the way you two treat one another. I want you -need you- to look after Elle for me after I'm gone. Even if you two decide to part ways, please check in on her. Don't get me wrong, I know she's strong but she'll need someone to talk to that knows what she went through."

"I understand, I promise I'll be there for her," I say honestly.

"Thank you Steve- really. It gives me peace knowing she has someone like you around caring for her. I'm glad she found you when she did- I know she probably won't ever admit it to you but the first night I was in the hospital, from falling and she rode the train all the way down, she sat there and told me all about a guy she'd met at the bakery and went out to lunch with. She said he was such a gentleman and the nicest guy she'd met in a long time. Elle couldn't wait for me to meet him- well you," he laughs softly, "that was the first time she ever told me about a guy she met so you should feel special Steve."

"I do," I smile. As a sat there, all I could imagine was the day we met. From the moment I saw her, she's had me in a trance. Suddenly, something popped into my mind that has been showing up occasionally from time to time. "Mr. Bostic, I know this probably sounds insane and it might not end up happening, but I won't have another time to ask you. I love Elle so much, I really do. She makes me smile every single day, she's always positive and supporting me in everything I do. I promise I'll look after her, support her, and give her anything she could possibly need. So please, will you give me your permission to marry your daughter?" I ask hesitantly. As he looks back at me I can't help but to give myself a mental slap. He probably thinks I'm absolutely crazy- maybe I shouldn't have asked.

"Of course Steve," he smiles and I sigh in relief, "I'm glad she has you. Now Steve can I count on you to do something for me?"

"Sure, anything," I reply. He attempts to stand up and I help him walk to the bedroom. He pulls out a drawer and hands me an envelope that has "Ellie" written on one side.

"Give this to her on her birthday?" he asks, his voice sounding more sad.

"Of course," I take the envelope, fold it in half and stick it neatly into my pocket. Just before we walk back into the living room, Elle and Mrs. Bostic are back with the food. After we eat, Elle and I stay for another few hours before we head back to the city.

"So what did you two do while we were gone?" Elle asks slyly just before shutting the truck door.

"Nothing, just watched some TV together and he asked me about the season," I say trying to hide my guilt, hoping she wouldn't press further.

"Sounds fun," she smiles.

I nod as the truck roars to life. As we talk about the preparations for Thanksgiving, I can't help but to think of what kind of engagement rings Elle would like.
