Looking Up

Meeting the Bullies

-----Elle's POV

Game 4 is starting in an hour and all of Philadelphia is ready- you can feel it in the air. I decided earlier that I would wear my Giroux jersey with a pair of leggings and my orange vans. Andy and Jamie are picking me up in a few minutes to head over to the Wells Fargo Center- Jamie is Andy's girlfriend, but also my best friend.

We met our freshman year at college- we lived on the same floor. One night, I had left my door open while I was watching a Flyers game. Jamie had been walking by, asked about the score, and we ended up watching the game together- yelling at the tv and bonding. Ever since then, she's been my best friend. Soon after, I'd invited her to a family gathering during summer at Aunt Kate's house where she met my cousin Andy, a junior at Rowan University at the time. They've been together since and now I'm just waiting for Andy to grow a pair and finally propose to her.

I hear a car horn honk and my doorbell ring a couple dozen times, "that must be the dynamic duo," I say to myself. I run over to the buzzing the intercom, hold down the button and yell, "I'M COMING, I'M COMING YOU CAN STOP NOW!" I run over to the counter, grab my bag, and just before I leave, I send Steve a text message.

'Good luck tonight! Kick some ass!'

I haven't really spoken to him a lot since our date because he's been preparing for tonight's game. I'm not exactly sure where our relationship, or friendship, or whatever we actually have stands, which makes me even more nervous. We never kissed and he didn't try to after the door had slammed, which in return, has left me feeling awkward and nervous about "us"- well if there is even an us. Hopefully, tonight all of this will be cleared up.

Once I get downstairs and outside, I hug Jamie, who was still ringing my doorbell. We hop into Andy's black Honda Civic and head to the center.

"So my mom has been telling me you've been seeing a guy pretty often- she wouldn't give me any details," Andy says looking at me skeptically in his rear view mirror.

Jamie turns around, "Ooo! You've been keeping this from me!? What's his name? What's he look like? Is he cute? -I bet he's cute- would we know him? Is he-"

"Woah! Slow down!" I yell from the back seat interrupting her, Jamie sighs and rolls her eyes. Jamie is known to ask way too many questions at once- she also talks incredibly fast so it's impossible to catch it all.

"Fine! Just tell me all you know about him then," she says.

"Well his name's Steve. I met him at the bakery- he came in one day and then he asked me out to lunch a couple days or so later. We just kinda hit it off I guess," I say, trailing off towards the end. I start to smile to myself thinking about our date the other day.

"Oh my god! ELLE! Look at you! You're totally head over heels for this guy!" Jamie yells happily, observing my smile and my blushing face. I roll my eyes at her, and start to look out the window.

"Well I need to meet this guy- see if he's okay for you." Andy says to me. He sometimes gets overprotective of me since I don't have a brother and Jen isn't around very often to keep an eye out for me. Ever since my dad's cancer diagnosis, he's been taking his brotherly role even more seriously.

We're on packer street about to turn in to the stadium when he asks, "Wait, what's his name again?"

"Steve, I already said that."

"Steve....." Andy says, waiting for me to fill in his pause with his last name.

"Oh! Mason." I say nonchalantly.

"WHAT!?!" They yell in unison, Jamie turns around again to face me, her jaw to the floor. I'm confused at first at their reaction, since Steve, to me, is just Steve Mason. But
I always forget that to the rest of Philadelphia he is Stone Cold Steve Mason. For several minutes, they ask me questions like, "How can you say that so calmly?", "What's he like off the ice?"

We park and start walking towards the building, Andy and Jamie are still shocked.
"Elle, this might be the only lucky thing that has happened to you," she says, looking over at me and smiling. Jamie has been there through many terrible coincidences and horrible ironies that have happened in my life, so hearing her say it, gives me hope things are going to start to turn around.

Being at the game and watching it with thousands of die hard Flyers fans is amazing. The game goes by quickly; Jamie and I spending most of the time yelling and screaming our heads off. Every goal sends adrenaline through our bodies; jumping up, screaming, and cheering become an involuntary reaction. Every time Steve comes onto the jumbotron, Jamie nudges me on my shoulder and gives me a devious smile.

The horn blows throughout the stadium, ending the game. Everyone stands up on their feet, waving their orange towels. The Flyers win; all of Philadelphia is celebrating together. The boys skate over to Steve and they each give him a helmet tap and an embrace. Caught up in the moment, the three of us hug and cheer together.

When the excitement dies down, and everyone is watching Coatsey interview Simmonds, I finally text Steve.

Me: Hey! You played AMAZING!

Steve: Thank you! Can you still come to the locker room? They'll let you in after the interviews are done. I'll tell one of the guys outside that you're allowed to come in.

Me: Sure! That sounds great- is it okay if my cousin and his girlfriend come too? I totally understand if they aren't allowed.

Steve: No that's fine, I can't wait to meet them, gotta go, see you in a few!

"What are you smiling about?" Jamie asks me skeptically.

I look up from my phone, "Oh nothing just something on Twitter. Let's go this way out to the car." They are in for the surprise of their lives. They keep asking me if even know where we're going and I just keep replying with nods and yeses.

Luckily, when we're just getting there, the interviewers are leaving, so I just follow where they're coming from. I can hear them whispering behind me, "is she crazy?", "we're definitely lost," "I'm pretty sure we're going to get yelled at."

When we get to the door, I tell the man that I'm here to see Steve, he smiles and lets us in- Jamie and Andy are looking at me with baffled facial expressions. Once they know they're coming with me to the locker room, they start freaking out. We make our way to the locker room and the couple sticks close behind me.

As we reach the locker room, our hearts are pounding in our chests. We stand in the entrance, starstruck. All of our favorite players are in front of us at their cubbies talking and laughing, celebrating their win. The three of us are huddled together in a cluster like penguins trying to get warm. Some of the players glance up at us with confused facial expressions. Most likely because one: we didn't come in with WAGS, and two: we looked like three lost children looking for our mothers.

I'm frantically searching for Steve's familiar calming face when Luke Schenn steps in front of me trying to make eye contact. All of us are taken off guard.

"Hi! Do you need help?" He asks with a confused facial expression.

"Hi!" I manage to squeak, "Uhm- y-y-yes- I-I'm- w-w-we're looking-"

All of the sudden, Steve puts arm around Luke, "I'll take it from here," he looks at us with a gigantic smile on his face and Luke walks back to his area. We all sigh in relief that Steve had spotted us across the room. Jamie, being more out going than me, broke the silence, "Thank goodness you came when you did, I thought Elle was about to short circuit."

The three of them laugh hard at me while I cover my face and shake my head in embarrassment; after a little bit, I can't hold back my laughter.

As we walk over to his area, we talk about the game and how great it was. Suddenly, Scott Hartnell walks up next to Steve, "I'm guessing this is Elle," he smiles and reaches his hand out to me to shake my hand, "we've been harassing Steve about meeting you." I blush and shake his hand- I'm surprised I can even keep it together. I introduce both players to Jamie and Andy. After that, Steve introduces all of us to the players- they give us a chorus of hellos. Scott takes the couple over to meet their favorite players, Wayne and Brayden Schenn, leaving Steve and I to talk.

"You really did play amazing out there, it was a great game." I say sincerely.

"Thank you, I'm so glad you were here to see it, the energy is so much different during playoffs."

After a of couple minutes of some small, Steve tells me to wait outside of the locker room, while he gets a quick shower and changes. I nod and say sure; a lot of the guys were filing into the showers at this time. Jamie and Andy wait with me outside as well for Steve. The entire time they talk to me, I nod every so often, not really listening to the conversation. My eyes are fixating on the doorway, watching for Steve. I'm so nervous about what is to come. Does he still like me? Does he think I'm not into him? I'm determined to find out these answers- hopefully without humiliating myself.

-----Steve's POV

"She seems like a sweet girl!" Luke says to me, while tying his tie.

Claude chimes in, "Bring her with us to the club tonight Mase, I didn't get to see her."

"We'd all like to get to know her better for sure," Scott yells across the room, raising his eyebrows, insinuating obviously more than just simple conversation. The guys laugh at Scott's audacity.

I look at Scott and shake my head at him laughing. "Alright I'll see what she says, can't promise anything," I say while buttoning up my white shirt.

Some of the guys leave already for the club while I'm putting on my navy blue suit jacket. I grab my phone and wallet and head towards the locker room door. Once I lock eyes with Elle, her face lights up, and I'm sure mine does too. She looks so cute in her jersey, sure, it says 28 instead of 35, but it doesn't matter.

"So all three of you are invited to this club we're going to go to celebrate," I say to them, hoping Elle will accept the invitation. I see her facial expression go from happy to panic in a matter of seconds. My gut twists, knowing her answer will most likely be a no.

"Oh I'm sure Elle would love to go!" Jamie says nudging Elle's shoulder, pushing her forward closer to me. She looks over to Jamie and gives her a dirty look.

"No, no I couldn't Steve, really, I-I-I have to open up the bakery tomorrow." She says, trying to get out of going to the club.

"Don't worry I'll open for you!" Andy chimes in. "Sorry Elle, looks like you're free, plus you don't have a ride home anymore. Bye!"

At that moment, Andy and Jamie wave bye, and walk away from us laughing and smiling at Elle. Now it was just the two of us, standing alone, waiting for one of us to start talking. She is looking at the ground and I can tell she's trying not to lose her shit and stay calm- her face gives away everything she's feeling.

Taking advantage of the privacy, I walk up to her and grab her hand. She looks up, blushing, biting her lip to hold back a smile. I take my other hand and start to stroke her cheek with my thumb.

"You don't have to go, but it would be incredible if you did. Elle, the guys want you there. I promise I won't let you out of my sights if you come toniht- and if you want to go home at any time just say the word and we'll leave," I say to her softly. I can tell she's hesitant but within seconds she nods her head and agrees to go. My heart soars, and I give her a large goofy smile.

I lead her out of the building, into the player parking lot, and to my truck, still holding her hand. I help her into the vehicle and then start the car once I get in. Before I pull out of the parking lot, I text Scotty, Jakub, and G that Elle is joining us tonight. I chuckle to myself, she looks anxious and she's terrible at hiding it- this should be fun.
