Of Icings, Halfpipes, and Pterodactyls

Chapter 29: You bag of milk, you.

“I--I can’t.”

“Lily.”

“I can’t. It’s too soon,”

“I don’t think so, I trust you.”

I shook my head taking a deep breath looking up at Sidney, my eyes widened before I looked back down. His beautiful eyes were too hopeful, too trusting and I knew I would let him down if I agreed to this.

“Lily,” Sidney pleaded.

“I’ll ruin it,”

“Please? Just try?”

“I’ll just screw it all up. I never learned how to properly use scissors in elementary school.” I whined.

Sidney groaned clearly exasperated at my refusal to even attempt this task. So he picked up the pair of scissors resting on the counter and cut the bag of milk himself instead of arguing the matter further.

“Who thinks up this sort of thing anyways?” I complained as I eyeballed the bag filled with the white liquid, “Like, who said, let’s put the milk in a bag. And what happens if it falls over?”

“It doesn’t. And it can’t. It’s secure,” Sidney sighed as he set it securely in its container before putting it back in the fridge.

I stared after it dubiously, still not trusting the milk.

“Good morning!” Trina Crosby was just coming into the kitchen.

“Morning!” Sidney and I chorused.

“How was the gym this morning?” she asked.

“I’m surprised I can still move,” I admitted as I stretched. I had thought my workouts were intense, until I faced Sidney’s off season NHL workouts. Granted, we trained with slightly different goals.

Mrs. Crosby watched with rather an amused as Sidney poured the boiling water into my cup for my tea as I put raspberry jam on both of our toasts.

Sid’s parents weren’t at all that surprised when we told them we were seeing each other; they had known I was coming up for Sid’s birthday, so they must have already put two and two together. That or Taylor probably told them something. I was thinking it was a combination of the two, but I wasn’t going to say anything. Everything was okay.

I woke up a few minutes before the alarm went off even though I hadn’t slept well throughout the night. During the previous night, I had woken up every couple of hours just to make sure I would actually wake up before the alarm. Reaching for my phone, I turned off the alarm.

Waking up just these few minutes earlier, well, it would give us enough time before we would head out for the morning workout; despite today being the day it was, Sidney wasn’t about to skive off on a workout.

Sliding over onto Sid, I started kissing his neck, slowly moving south.

“Lily?” I heard Sidney mumble clearly both confused and sleepy.

I knew we both could count on one hand the times I was the one out of the two of us to wake up first. Even with the alarm going off, he would be the one dragging me out of the bed with me begging for a few more minutes. Sid was much more a morning person than myself.

“Well,” Sid’s voice changed quite quickly, losing all of the sleepiness from it as he realized what was going to happen quite shortly, “This is certainly a new way to wake up in the morning.”

“Happy birthday,” I muttered, still half asleep as I kissed just under his belly button moving my hands to slide his boxers down.

I heard his high pitched giggle and I titled my head up to smirk, pausing in my work to take him in.

Sid had propped his head up on a pillow and was watching me intently with a silly grin on his sleepy face. His eyes were darker than normal; either because the room itself was dark or because he was still tired or because of how turned on he was getting I wasn’t sure, but I found, I really liked it. Obviously he didn’t look any older than yesterday, but somehow, I found he was even more beautiful to me. Or handsome. Or attractive. Or he took my breath away. Or whatever.

I pushed my silly thoughts aside. I couldn’t stare at him all day. We only had a limited time before we had to head out for our morning workout.

And god forbid if Sidney Crosby was ever late for anything.

“When are you headed back to school?” I asked Taylor as I unbuttoned, unzipped, and wiggled out of my jean shorts and folded them into a neat little pile before setting them in my bag on the boat.

It was midmorning and absolutely beautiful out. Sidney, Taylor, and I were heading out on the water in Sid’s boat with some of his cousins. I wasn’t exactly sure what they knew about Sidney’s and my relationship, but my guess was that they knew something. My other guess was that they wouldn’t say anything to anyone if they did know. It seemed like this family kept things very private, just like Geno’s.

“Couple of weeks. Around when Sid goes to camp.” Taylor chewed her lip in the same manner Sidney did. She was obviously not looking forward to being separated from her older brother once again.

Sidney had sent lengthy emails throughout the summer detailing the progress his sister had made in her training both on and off of the ice. He was so completely proud of her and loved her so dearly. Every email made me adore Taylor more and more and it made me feel closer to her. I even had exchanged a handful of messages back and forth with her.

I felt someone watching me and I glanced away from Taylor. Sidney was staring at me so intently I felt myself blush. Glancing at my own self, I made sure there wasn’t any huge stain on my mint green bikini or something on me. There wasn’t.

“What?” I called at him frowning slightly.

“Just checking out my girlfriend,” Sid giggled.

My jaw dropped to the floor as did Taylor’s.

“What?” I was finally able to gasp.

Sidney’s giggle was getting louder and higher pitched, and was causing some of his cousins to turn around to watch.

“You heard me.” He grinned giving me another obvious up down.

“Taylor, I think your brother has lost his mind,” I breathed to Taylor as if trying not to move too quickly or else I would startle Sidney or something.

“You can’t say that, it’s my birthday!” Sidney pouted, clearly trying to be playful.

I shook my head and looked at Taylor who looked just as confused and lost as me.

“I have no idea,” Taylor answered my confused look, but she was grinning.

“Let’s go!” One of the cousins yelled and fired up the boat.

I reached into my bag and took out a bottle of suntan lotion and started applying a thick layer on my extremely burnable skin.

“Need help?” Sid offered watching me attempt to get my back. I nodded and handed him over the SPF.

He very meticulously when over every inch of skin that could possibly be burnt, rubbing in the lotion just so.

“So what exactly are we doing?” I asked over the rumble of the engine.

“We’re going wakesurfing.”

I was silent for a couple of seconds.

“No.”

“Yup.” He nodded taking out two boards from a compartment.

“Are you serious?” my eyes lit up as I saw the boards, “You don’t really? Are you good?”

“I’m decent,” he shrugged, but Sid had that little half smile on his face meaning he must be perfect. The bastard.

“I want to see you board,” I demanded.

Soon we were out far enough and one of his cousins was at the helm of the boat. Sid got in the water and the boat started up and so did Sidney. Sidney got up on the board and let go of the rope. As expected, Sid was more than okay. His strong body moved with the body naturally, feeling the water and moving naturally. My mind immediately went to imagining him out on the snow, though, I kept him in his small swim suit, for research purposes of course.

“OH MY GOD!” I yelled when he got back on the boat flinging myself at him. He caught me in his arms and I leaned back so I could look at him.

“You can! You are fantastic! You were so natural in the way you moved! I can’t even right now! We are going snowboarding! Well, we can’t cause the Olympics and I don’t want to risk any injury to you. But next summer I am going to take you to the Alps or Australia or anywhere. We can just go down some of the most beautiful paths and it will just be, incredible!” I was positively glowing. Never did I think Sidney would have that much natural talent or even have any interest in anything involving a board.

Sidney was just watching me with an odd look on his face.

“What?” I asked feeling suddenly nervous.

“Next summer, eh?”

I froze.

Next summer. Those weren’t Sidney’s words or Sidney’s plans. Those were mine. I was making plans for us for next year. I was assuming that there would be an us that far down in the future. The words had come out of my mouth so naturally and so relaxed at the time.

I was really glad that Sidney’s arms were around me because I was pretty sure he was the only reason I was still standing.

“Let’s go next summer, Lily. Let’s do it.” Sid said softer, his voice warm and gentle.

I arched up the few inches and this time it was all me. His lips were as soft as ever and he tasted a bit like the lake.

“Lily, I am so sending you this picture. Sid, you too!” Taylor’s voice was loud and brought us back from our moment.

We were on the hammock, and the sun was setting. It had been an incredible day. Well, it had been an incredible series of days, but today was even better than the rest. Dinner had just been a cookout with his family and some of his friends and some hockey players he knew, but it was all pretty low key. I was pretty sure that I had eaten enough for two, maybe three people.

Everyone was sorta off doing their own thing now. Sidney and I had elected to rest in the hammock that overlooked the lake.

In retrospect it was all kind of a disgustingly sweet perfect moment that I didn’t want to ever end.

But it all had to end, and I knew that the insanity of our very different upcoming schedules was about to start and then who knew how many moments like this we would actually be able to steal away as our own.

“Mmm?” I tilted my head up to look at Sidney, I hadn’t heard what he said, too lost in my own thoughts.

“I said, that this was probably just about the most perfect birthday I’ve ever had,” he repeated himself, giving me a slight squeeze.

“Good to know, old man,” I couldn’t resist the crack.

“I’m not old,” he frowned.

“Sure you’re not,” I sighed cuddling deeper into his arm and leaning my head onto his chest, “Twenty-six and going after sweet young girls like me.”

“You’re only four years younger than me. And I’m pretty sure you made the first move,” Sid retorted defensively.

“Uh, who followed who upstairs at a party?”

“Who started the jam war?”

“Who takes their shirt off like that?” I scoffed at him.

“Who didn’t want me to leave when I carried them to their bed after they fell asleep during a movie?”

I paused for a moment, I hadn’t realized I had voiced those thoughts out loud, “But you didn’t.”

It was Sid’s turn to be quiet for a moment.

Had he stayed, it could have jumpstarted the relationship. Maybe. Or it could have resulted in some sort of a fling. Or nothing. Who knew.

“I think,” he murmured, “This way was better for us.”

“Me too. I would never have learned that you SOMETHING.”

We both started laughing.

“Lily.”

It was the next morning. I had just gotten back from a long morning run while Sidney was at the gym for one of his big workouts.

“I took a picture last night, and I think you’d maybe like to have it,” Trina said leaning over flipping through photos on her phone.

It was just a picture of Sidney and me in the hammock. You couldn’t see anything but the back of our heads, the water, and the sunset. If you knew us, you could recognize us. But it was an oddly intimate picture, and beyond beautiful.

“It’s incredible,” I didn’t have any other words for it, “Can you send it to me?”

“Of course,” she smiled warmly at me.

I gave her my number and I got the picture a few moments later. After saving Mrs. Crosby’s phone number, I pulled up the picture, completely mesmerized with it. I found my finger moving on its own and setting it as my phones background.

Notes

HeLLo Friends! Just something short and sweet!!

What is wakesurfing? I am sure anyone reading this has seen it before, thus knows what it is. But here is an example of it ;) (aka the act of letting go of the rope and riding on the waves the boat makes, so simulating surfing on a lake plus the board is slightly different).

Cheers!
