The First One

Chapter 3

“So, what happened between you and Rylee?” Dougie took off his jacket once they were back in the apartment. Adam did the same, kicked off his shoes and headed straight for the fridge. He took out two bottles of beer and handed one over to Dougie before he collapsed on the sofa. Dougie sat down on the armchair, looking at Adam expectantly.
“Rylee Sinclair…” Adam sighed and took a long drag from his beer. He could still see remember the look on her face when he’d broken up with her. “We started going out when we were fourteen, but we’d known each other even before then. Everything was great. I mean, we argued, but most those fights were a lot of fun and ended in a kiss. She supported me in every possible way. When I went away to play hockey, it still worked, but it was hard on both of us.
“I wanted to marry her, get her to live with me, pursue this dream together, but on the other hand, I didn’t want her to give up her life at home. When I got drafted by Columbus, I knew that I’d spend even more time playing hockey. I wanted to actually play in the NHL, that meant additional training, less time for Rylee and I knew that she wouldn’t be happy with the situation. I think it would have been even harder on me.” A sad smile was playing on his lips when he thought back.
“So I thought I should set her free, save us the heartache. That way we were both able to concentrate on our future without worrying about the other one. At least in theory.” Adam sighed. Dougie’s eyes were glued to him. “Man, you should have seen her face when I broke up with her. I told her that it would be better for both of us, and that we wouldn’t be happy if we kept this up. I could see in her eyes exactly when her heart broke. I wasn’t even able to explain that much more. She didn’t want me to touch her or say anymore. She said that she’d seen it coming, but we’d been fine until then and she’d believed that we would conquer everything together. After that we didn’t stay in contact. I was afraid to find out that she’d found another guy. I wanted her to be happy, but, you know…”
“You’re an idiot!” Dougie burst out and shook his head. Unbelievable! “You should have at least asked her to come with you. You could have discussed it. You made that decision not only for you, but for both of you. She didn’t have a say in this. Jesus Christ, no wonder she was crying after talking to you.”
“I know! It was a horrible decision and I’ve regretted it long enough.” Adam closed his eyes for a brief moment. Yes, he’d missed her ever since leaving her. Seeing her today had made that clear to him again. He wanted her back in his life and he should have never pushed her away. Hockey did make him happy, but Rylee was a completely different matter.
“I think she definitely still has feelings for you. Or she wouldn’t have reacted the way she did.” Dougie balanced the bottle on his knee. He’d been living with Adam for months now and he’d never seen him so… frustrated? Flustered? Even when he’d been out with an injury, he hadn’t seemed that frustrated. “And you want to win her back?”
“Yeah. But much more I want to see the old Rylee again. The one that was full of life, loved to laugh and did this loud and often. She was always so happy, wore her hair down, didn’t give a crap what anybody thought about her.” Adam shook his head. “And now she’s married to a rich man, doesn’t smile like she used to do, and she couldn’t even say to me that she’s happy with him.”
“So, all that’s missing right now is a plan.”
“Right.”

Rylee was woken up the next morning by a gentle kiss on her forehead. When she opened her eyes, she saw Ben squatting down in front of her. She hadn’t heard him coming home the night before.
“Good morning.” He was already dressed in a dark blue suit. She could smell coffee, but that smell was coming from his lips. There was no mug in sight. Great start to a day.
“Morning.” Rylee wanted to pull the covers up over her head, stay in bed all day. She felt physically ill, but she there were people to meet, places to be.
“I get the feeling that you’re not a lot better than last night.”
“Not really.” She shook her head and closed her eyes.
“Why don’t you stay home?” At that statement she opened her eyes to look at him again. Had he really said what she thought he’d said? “It’s no use if you go to a meeting or something when you look like this and don’t feel well.” Ben got up and straightened his tie.
And here Ryle had thought that he actually worried about her well-being, but no. It was more about the way she looked and how others would see her. Ben wasn’t a bad guy. He was actually really nice, easy to talk to and took good care of her. Lately, though, he’d been swamped with work and had only worried about appearances and his work.
“I’ll be home late today. After I finish the meeting, I’ll play golf and I’m going to dinner with some of the guys. Don’t wait up for me.”
“Okay.” She turned around and closed her eyes. When she heard the door close, she let out a breath, already close to tears again. Her eyes were probably red and swollen already. No, she wouldn’t cry anymore. She needed a shower and something to eat. After that she could still go back to bed and hide from the world.
After ten more minutes, Rylee got up, took an old shirt and sweatpants out of the walk-in closet and headed for the bathroom. After a quick shower, she brushed her teeth and went to the kitchen, to get a bowl of cereal. They had someone who cleaned the place, did grocery shopping and stuff like that. Rylee loved cooking, so she did that whenever she felt like it.
With her bowl of cereal she walked back to the walk-in closet, to her side of it and sat down on the floor. There was one box right at the back that she’d kept ever since Adam had broken up with her.
She took a deep breath before she opened it and peered inside. There were lots of photos, a bracelet Adam had given her after they’d been in a relationship for a year. A T-Shirt from the Sudbury Wolves he’d given her when he’d started playing there, another shirt from him. The most important things in there were the photos, though. From the trips they’d taken together, from them together lying in the sun.
Her favorite photo had been taken at some kind of dance. She hadn’t even realized that someone had photographed them. They were dancing, her hand lay on Adam’s shoulder. He held her close and gazed down at her. Bothe of them were smiling. Everyone had said that you could see how much they loved each other in this picture.
Rylee brushed away the tears, put everything back in the box and shoved it back to where she’d gotten it from. She’d told herself that she wouldn’t cry anymore. With heavy footsteps she walked back to the bedroom, crawled under the covers and turned on the TV. No, she would not get up again.
