Ten
~~Fast Forward to Frozen Four~~
Jon’s POV
The guys and I were all at Kaner’s place watching the final game of the Frozen Four. It was such a close and tension filled game. We all barely talked throughout the entire game and it had us all sitting on the edge of our seats, literally.
“Ten seconds left folks and it looks like we will be going into OT with the game tied at 4-4. Last face-off of the period.” Chris the announcer was saying.
We all watched as UND won the faceoff but one of the UVM players quickly regained control of the puck, he went to pass it to a teammate but he missed and suddenly Meg had the puck and she skated down to the other end so fast that UVM’s defense couldn’t keep up and it became a one-on-one between her and their goalie. We were all holding our breath as the clock continued to tick. The shot, the horn, the crowd. It all happened so fast. And then the UND players were all piling on Meg and the announcers were going crazy and we were all jumping and freaking out.
When we had calmed down they were just starting an interview with Meg and we all sat back down to watch it.
“Congratulations! How do you feel winning this for the fourth year in a row?” the interviewer asked.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling. It’s an unreal sensation. I’m so proud of this team.” Meg replied slightly out of breath and grinning ear to ear.
“Walk us through your winning goal.”
“Umm well I just saw the puck loose and I had a clear path to the other side of the ice and decided to take it. I wasn’t really expecting for it to become a shootout situation but I’m just happy we didn’t go into OT.”
“How does this improve your position for getting drafted this year?”
“I don’t really think I’ll ever get drafted to be honest with you. It’s the NHL and I don’t really think they want a girl in the league. My main focus is getting onto the Olympic team again for next year.”
“Well good luck at the draft anyways. You have so many people that are behind you and want to see you get into the NHL. And congratulations again on tonight. Thank you for your time.”
“Thank you.” and with that she skated away.
“Meg Williams, game winning goal scored with .26 seconds left on the clock. What a game. What a goal.”
The guys and I were still amped from the game and we didn’t leave Kaner’s apartment until after midnight.
When I got home I checked my cell phone and saw a text from my brother.
David:
Did you catch the championship game?
Me:
Yeah, you?
David:
Hell yeah! We all did! Talk about a finish! Do you really think that Meg might make it into the NHL?
Me:
IDK but I think that if there is ever going to be a girl in the NHL she would most definitely be the first. If she can’t do it than no one can.
David:
Well I hope she does.
