Proving Everyone Wrong

Eleven

Draft Day:

Meg’s POV:

I put my heels on and straightened up, looking at myself in the hotel mirror. I was wearing a black chiffon belted split maxi skirt with a pale pink tight one shoulder shirt. I looked at Rosie who had just stepped out of the bathroom and was now staring at me all sentimentally as if she was about to cry.

“Oh my God you look gorgeous!” she whispered “Meg I don’t care what you say I just know that something different is going to happen at this year’s draft, I can feel it.”

***

When we got to the stadium with my mom and sister I got pulled aside for several boring interviews. I felt like a broken record repeating myself over and over with things such as;
“I’m hear to support my teammates both past and present and wish them the best of luck.”

“Each year I hope to make to be able to congratulate the boys I know and love on their achievements and I can’t think of a better place.”

“I know so many guys who deserve this and for them this is their biggest chance, for them they won’t breathe a sigh of relief until the end of this weekend.”

“I know a lot of guys who aren’t going to be drafted in the first round, which means they have to wait until tomorrow for the rest of the rounds, but I know that each and every one of them deserves the first round.”

As I was about to try to head into the stands to find my parents I ran into Tray and couldn’t help but envelope him in a massive hug. I could feel his chuckle vibrate through his chest.

“Hey there kiddo, media giving you a tough time?” he asked looking down at me.

I pulled apart from him and put my hands on my hips, “You have no idea how sick I am of them.”

He opened his mouth to reply but was interrupted by the announcement telling everyone to get to their seats so they could start.

He looked back down at me, “Good Luck tonight Meg.”

We had started to walk away from each other, “Good Luck to you Tray, you deserve it.”

“YOU’RE BETTER THAN YOU THINK!” he shouted at me but by then we were too far apart for me to reply.

Once I had found my mom, sister, and Rosie I sat down and felt myself relax for the first time all day. Looking around I realized I was the only one relaxed in the entire stadium. Everyone else was clearly anxious and hoping that they wouldn’t have to sit through this same form of hellish torture tomorrow for the rest of the draft rounds.

My mom turned to me and said, “Meg are you nervous at all?”

“I’m nervous for my teammates not myself.”

My mom sighed and said, “I just want you to know how proud I am of you. Just getting invited to sit here in this stadium is a massive accomplishment and honor. Whether you get drafted or not you are still the best female this sport has ever seen.”

I looked at my mom who looked like she was about to cry and I gave her a massive hug and mumbled an “I Love You” into her hair. Just then Gary Bettman took his place on the stage.
“Good Afternoon, Ladies and Gentleman. It is with my great pleasure that I get to welcome you to this year’s draft. It is a great honor and there are so many young and bright futures that will be started today.” He paused, “I would like to welcome the team that will be making this year’s first pick to the stage.” And with that he took a step back. A group of men walked from their teams table in the middle of the floor to the stage while everyone in the stadium held their breath.

“It is with a great honor that we will be making this year’s first pick. I’d like to thank this great city for having us and everyone who came here tonight to support us and everyone back home who is watching on television or at our arena party and supporting us and our decision.”

“Without further ado, this year we plan to make a new kind of history that we hope will travel into this coming season. This year we would like to welcome to our team, as the first overall pick, from the University of North Dakota, Meg Williams.”

@RedRoselaura

I've suffered from some serious writers block. Additionally, I've been insanely busy. I'm going to try to work on it more when I get the file on my new computer. Thanks for the comment. It definetly motivated me, I kind of figured this story was off of everybody's radar by now and that no one would care if I continued or stopped. so thank you. And I will definetly get back to working on this :)
