Meg's POV

After the draft I had done so many interviews I had a sore throat when I woke up the next day. I went back home to New Jersey with my family and Rosie. When we landed in Newark Airport I couldn’t wait to see my other little sister. She had had to stay at our dad’s house during the draft because she was sick and too young to stay home alone.

That summer was a mixture of flights between New Jersey and Detroit, interviews, and family/Rosie time. Rosie was leaving to study in Paris for the first half of the school year and I was leaving for development camp in Detroit the same day.

“The beginning of summer went by too fast. I’m going to miss you sooooo much!” Rosie said as she wrapped her arms around me in the airport. I instantly hugged her back. This was going to be the longest we had been away from eachother ever. Even though we went to different schools last year, one of us always managed to make it out to see the other at least once a month and then their had also been holidays. Now rosie will be on the other side of the ocean and I won’t see her until she returns in January.

“I know Rose, I’m going to miss you way too much!” I mumbled into her shoulder.

“I won’t even be here when you make your NHL debut! What kind of a friend am I!?” she sobbed out.

“Rose I got drafted, im not in the NHL yet. I’ll know after camp is over next week , whether I’ll be in the AHL or the NHL.” I said trying to calm both of us down.

“Oh shut up. We all know that you’re going to be put on the NHL team. Ever heard of the first overall pick not making it? I didn’t think so.” Just then the call for her flight came over head and we gave each other one last hug before separating and going our own ways.

By the time my flight had landed in Detroit, I was ready to pass out. I had never been able to sleep on planes no matter how tired I was or how hard I tried. I got my luggage quickly, signed a few autographs and took some pictures. then hopped in my rental car and went straight to my hotel and straight up to my bed.

When I woke the next morning I showered, ate breakfast, and grabbed my gear, and headed down for day one of development camp.

***

The week went by pretty quickly but by the end of the last day I was sore and tired and ready to go home and sleep for about three years. I was about to leave when the Wings GM Ken Holland walked in and asked to speak with me in one of the offices. All the guys were giving me thumbs up and smiles knowing that I would be walking out with a signed contract to the NHL this season.

When I got inside I closed the door and their were a couple of the managers and coaches in the room as well.

Ken Holland cleared his throat and said, “you were the player everyone wanted, the player we wanted. We got you. We know that you are going to do great things in the NHL, actually amazing things in the NHL. We also know that you are going to become the very extensive weapon of your team. Unfortunately for us, your team is not one with our team.” He paused and I was looking at him a little shocked. He looked at me sympathetically before continuing, “We made a massive trade a few minutes ago, a trade that gave us several prospects, spots in the next few drafts, and a current player. The team that made the trade with us only wanted one thing in return for all that, and that’s you. We look forward to competing against you in the future, whether that’s this season or next. We wish you the best of luck with your new team.”

When the conversation was over I had walked out of the office stunned and all the guys had congratulated me and started t ask questions. I only shook my head and mumbled, “traded…” to which this caught everyone by surprise.

***

News of the massive trade had spread fast and become one of the biggest headlines. Some critics said it was risky and dumb for both teams. Other critics thought that the Wings shouldn’t have drafted me if they were this willing to just trade me up. Shortly after, fresh news broke as I signed a rookie contract that put me as a right wing in the NHL.

I flew out a few days in advance of training camp to look for an apartment to rent for this year. A couple of the guys on the team had already reached out to me with suggestions and advice on where to live and everything.

I was walking into the lobby of a nice apartment building with my real estate agent, Barb, when the elevator doors opened up and out walked two familiar faces.

Both buys came over and wrapped me into massive hugs.

“Hey Tray! Hey Greg! What are you guys doing here?” I asked.

“My uncle lives on floor 12 so we thought we would come and pay him a visit and annoy him for a week this summer.” said Greg with a shrug.

“Enough about us though. How are you feeling about this whole trade?” asked Tray.

“Oh, you know it is what it is. I’m just glad to have a signed contract and a spot in the NHL.”

“That’s good. Hey we’ll catch up with you later. How about dinner?” said Tray noticing the real estate agent waiting off to the side.

“Yeah that sounds awesome. Text me!” I said as we all hugged and said good bye. I followed Barb up to the apartment after apologizing to her for making her wait. When I walked in I was stunned. The apartment wasn’t massive like some of the others in this building, but it wasn’t cramped either. Everything was perfect for me. After looking around and listening to her talk about it I had made up my mind.

“I’ll take it.”

“Fantastic!” Barb clapped her hands together and did a little jump, “I have the papers and keys right here if you would like to sign.”

“Absolutely!” I signed everything and filled all the required paperwork out.
Barb handed me the two sets of keys to the apartment before saying,

“Welcome to Chicago!”

@RedRoselaura

I've suffered from some serious writers block. Additionally, I've been insanely busy. I'm going to try to work on it more when I get the file on my new computer. Thanks for the comment. It definetly motivated me, I kind of figured this story was off of everybody's radar by now and that no one would care if I continued or stopped. so thank you. And I will definetly get back to working on this :)
