Proving Everyone Wrong

Twelve

Meg’s POV

“…as the first overall pick, from the University of North Dakota, Meg Williams.” I was shocked, completely stunned. My mouth dropped and I couldn’t move. Then came the nudging at the back of my shoulder and the guy behind me saying “That’s you! Get up!” slowly as if in a trance I got up and hugged my mom, sister, and Rosie before being escorted to the stage. Unlike all the guys, I didn’t have a suit jacket to hand off to anyone.

I climbed the stage and shook hands with the managing team and thanked them while they congratulated me and laughed at my shock.

Then came the jersey with my last name and the year on the back. As I pulled it over my head I became even happier that I had chosen to wear a black skirt being as the girl in me thought about the colors and how they luckily didn’t clash.

After the picture we climbed down the stage and passed by all the other tables before getting to our own and I shook hands with the remaining staff and three players that had decided to show up. I looked around and was still in awe as the next team climbed the steps to make the second pick.

Someone told me that it was time for me to do some interviews before the media killed security to get out to me.

On my way back through the tables I passed by the Bruins table and was greeted with “congratulations”, nods, and smiles, the Flyers table was much of the same. Then I heard my name as I was passing another of the tables and turned to be greeted by none other than Jonathan Toews.

“I didn’t get a chance to say Congratulations. So Congrats, I knew you could do it.” He said with a warm smile.

“Thank you, I am in complete shock still.” I said slowly still trying to register what had just happened.

He laughed and added, “Well, we have the next pick so I should be heading back to our table. Unfortunately I won’t be seeing you in our locker room but I look forward to seeing you on the ice.”

“Yeah me too. It’ll be like when I beat you in the frozen four, although this time the prize is a bit bigger.” I grinned and added a wink while he just looked at me stunned. He recovered quickly and as I was about to turn away he said, “Game on.” And sent me a mischievous grin over his shoulder as he headed back to his table. I smiled to myself and headed out to greet the media.

Jon’s POV

Sitting here at the draft is always nerve racking the first day. We didn’t have the first pick but rather the third and I was seriously hoping that we would have the guts to pick Meg. A couple of the guys and I had been talking about her and her skills and we all agreed that she would get picked this year. We just hoped we were the only team that thought so.

I was sitting their twiddling my thumbs giving the crowd the occasional glance up at the crowd. I was watching Meg Williams walk down to her seat and talk with the two women and one small girl with her. She turned to who I assumed was her mom and hugged her for a while. It was sweet how she was surrounded by a small group instead of many. It made it more intimate, each hug more meaningful. Either that or it was sad that these were the only people who cared for her career or that they were the only people available to care.

Suddenly, my thoughts were interrupted by Gary Bettman introducing the draft and I turned my sole attention on the stage.

The first team mounted the stage and gave their short little speech of thanks before announcing their pick.

“…as the first overall pick, from the University of North Dakota, Meg Williams.”

“Damn it” I leaned back in my chair frustrated and noticed I wasn’t the only one at our table or in the room who had reacted that way. I was happy for her and proud because I knew she could do it. I knew she would be the first girl in the NHL, and I knew she was worthy of being taken first overall in the draft. I was pissed off because not only had we just lost Meg but we had just lost her to the Detroit Red Wings.

@RedRoselaura

I've suffered from some serious writers block. Additionally, I've been insanely busy. I'm going to try to work on it more when I get the file on my new computer. Thanks for the comment. It definetly motivated me, I kind of figured this story was off of everybody's radar by now and that no one would care if I continued or stopped. so thank you. And I will definetly get back to working on this :)
