Proving Everyone Wrong

Four

Jonathan Toews POV:

Tomorrow night we had an away game against Winnipeg so after practice today I decided to head over to my parents house and stay there tonight instead of going back to the hotel. It was such a great feeling to be home and to be able to see my mom and dad and my younger brother, David, again. My mom of course was just doting on me being here and was going all out of her way to try to make me everything I love to eat but I had to keep telling her that I can’t eat too much or else I’ll get sick and won’t be able to play tomorrow. I was sitting in our kitchen when my dad came in from work.

“Jonny boy! It’s so good to -- Darling what on Earth is all this food about!? You of all people should know the boy can’t eat all this the night before a game!” my dad said chuckling and shaking his head.

“Oh hush Bryan. A mother can dream can’t she!?” my mom replied knowing all too well that I would never eat it all. Just then my brother walked in.

“Jon!? I didn’t know I was going to get to see you until tomorrow’s game!”

“Hey David! How’ve you been?” I said getting up to give my brother a hug.

“Good, hey UND’s opening their season tonight against UVM we should all watch it.” And of course being as my family couldn’t live without hockey not one of us turned that down.

The game started at 6 so we decided that we were just going to eat while we watched the game or in between periods. We turned the tv on just as the announcers were started talking about one of the UND players;

“—But if anyone out there has followed Rutgers University the past three years they would know that this girl is anything but new to the world of men's college hockey. The past three years she's helped Rutgers not only go to the Frozen Four but win it all three years."

I instantly knew who they were talking about. I had played against her when I was a player at UND two years ago. I had never really talked to her but when we were playing each other in the Frozen Four I literally ran right into her on my way to our locker room. We talked for a little bit but neither of us had all that much time to spare and we both said our goodbyes pretty quickly. Of course UND only had like two games against Rutgers but we ended up playing against them in the Frozen Four and they had beaten us. She was only a junior in high school then and I remember some of the guys getting pretty hot in the collar about being beaten by a girl but most of them just prayed that she wouldn’t stay with Rutgers when she actually got to college. I guess their wish was granted because just then the cameras panned back out to the ice and you could easily pick out the petite right winger in a number 9 UND sweater waiting on the ice, in position, ready for the game to start.

----Meg’s POV:----

The ref dropped the puck and the game began. I was playing in the first line with Tray at center, Mike Mikaelson at left wing, and Greg and Leonardo Leon as our defense. Todd Kruger was in goal. Tray easily one the faceoff and passed the puck across to Mikaelson who held it skated down and passed it back off to Tray who instantly sent it over in my direction. I passed it back up to the point and Greg and Leonardo passed it back and forth at the point almost taunting the UVM forwards before sending it back over to me. One quick look and I knew I had a decent chance. I sent a slap shot straight into the upper left pocket of the net. The crowd erupted. Thirty seconds in this UND jersey and I sitting comfortably on a goal. As the guys came over to congratulate me I couldn’t help but grin like an idiot, scoring just did that to me.

The rest of the period went pretty well. Our fourth line center, Cliff, scored a goal. And Todd didn’t let a single one past. The feeling in the locker room was comfortable; no shame, no cockiness, just game zone. The second period was dead. It was as if it didn’t even exist. A silent crowd, no penalties, no goals, no nothing. We just passed the puck around skating from one end to the other for twenty minutes. This time around the locker room wasn’t as comfortable it was filled with frustration and disappointment. Finally in the third period the game exploded. Tray got two goals and an assist on my second goal of the night and Jeremy Fay (defense) got an assist on my third goal. First game of the season on a new team as the only girl and I was sitting proudly on top of a hat trick. I had knack for starting seasons off with a bang and I definitely feel like I kept that going tonight. The horn sounded signaling the end of the game. The final score was a shutout 6-0. With that we all headed over to our Todd before heading into the locker room. I stepped off the ice and started down the hall the sounds of the fans screams still ringing in my ears.

----Jon’s POV----

When UND won we were all really excited. It had been a great win and a killer way to start a season off. A shutout 6-0 with your most underated player scoring a hat trick is one way to shut the critics up. When the game finally finished it was getting late and I had to be up early for morning skate before my own game tomorrow so I said goodnight to my family and headed on up to bed. But as I fell asleep for some reason all I could think about was little number 9 skating around the ice.

@RedRoselaura

I've suffered from some serious writers block. Additionally, I've been insanely busy. I'm going to try to work on it more when I get the file on my new computer. Thanks for the comment. It definetly motivated me, I kind of figured this story was off of everybody's radar by now and that no one would care if I continued or stopped. so thank you. And I will definetly get back to working on this :)
