Act 1: Scene 3

Setting: Stanley Cup Final - Ice Rink - Model of the United Center
Jonathan and Patrick turn from the bench they are on. They walk upstage, heading onto the ice. They have their skates on and are ready for action. They find their helmets and gloves and put those on.

The rest of the Chicago Blackhawks skate out from the left side. They mingle with Jonathan and Patrick.

The opposing team, the Montreal Canadiens, skates out from the right side. They warm up.

An announcer’s voice comes over the intercom:

ANNOUNCER
Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, the Montreal Canadiens!

There are boos from the audience.

ANNOUNCER
And put your hands together for your Chicago Blackhawks!

“Chelsea Dagger” plays in the background, as the Blackhawks skate around on the ice, including TYLER SEGUIN. A ref skates out from upstage, he puts a whistle to his lips and blows on it.

The puck is dropped at center ice, and Jonathan wins the face-off. He speeds forward, deking around Canadien players. He passes the puck across to Tyler, who sends it across to the other side, where a wide open Patrick Kane is. Patrick gets the puck and gets a backhander, right over the glove side.

Goal!

The light goes off. Patrick skates over to his linemates. They celebrate screaming their pride. Jonathan and Tyler skate to the bench. Patrick follows. They fist bump their teammates.

The puck drops again and we get a spotlight on Patrick, who happily skates up and down the ice.

PATRICK
I've been trying to open the door
To the secret of my destiny
And every new road I think is the one
Seems to lead right back to me

JONATHAN
(skating by him)
I've looked for a way to be wiser
A way to be strong
Now I see the answer was hiding
In me all along

PATRICK
And I'm ready to fly
Over the sun
Like a rocket to heaven
And I'm ready to soar
Right through the sky
Never dreamed I'd find something to lift me so high
I've always had wings
But I wasn't ready to fly

TYLER
(skating up)
Restless, hopeless, and misunderstood
Like so many others I know
So busy tryin' to keep holdin' on
When I should've been letting go

I was given the gift to find it
The spirit inside me
But I never really imagined
All I could be

PATRICK, JONATHAN, and TYLER
And I'm ready to fly
Over the sun
Like a rocket to heaven
And I'm ready to soar
Right through the sky
Never dreamed I'd find something to lift me so high
I've always had wings
But I wasn't ready to fly

(Instrumental Break - Jonathan scores a goal with assists from his linemates)

JONATHAN and TYLER
The answer to all of my wonder
Was right in my hands
Now it's time for me to discover
All that I am

JONATHAN, PATRICK, and TYLER
And I'm ready to fly
Over the sun
Like a rocket to heaven
And I'm ready to soar
Right through the sky
Never dreamed I'd find something to lift me so high
I've always had wings
But I wasn't ready to fly

I've always had wings
Now I'm finally ready to fly

They launch off down the ice together. Tyler scores the goal this time. Their celebration is cut short, as...

….The lights lower, as JOHN SCOTT hops over the boards. He growls and heads toward Patrick, who has broke away from his teammates. Scott rams into Patrick, sending him crashing to the ice in a huge open-ice hit.

PATRICK
What the---?

JOHN SCOTT
Oh, come now Kaner, you silly winger. It was only a little hit!

PATRICK
You want to go?

JOHN SCOTT
Go where? Out to eat? Sure! I’ll treat you to a nice meal of a knuckle sandwich, Princess!

Patrick scrambles to his feet. Jonathan and Tyler skate up to Patrick’s aid. They shield him.

JONATHAN
Hey, Scotty, why don’t you pick on someone your own size?!

TYLER
Or, maybe start playing some hockey, instead of being a big jerk!

JOHN SCOTT
Was that a comeback, Segs? That’s a lot coming from the reject of the Bruins and Stars! How did you manage to piss off the Stars?

TYLER
Shut up!

Scott laughs.

JOHN SCOTT
Fine, I’ll let the little goal scoring Princess off easily this time, but mark my words, I’m not going to let up on the hits! It’s hockey, not “Let’s not hit Patrick Kane, because he’s a precious player”, he is subjected to any kind of rough ride I want to dish to him!

He flashes a smirk to Patrick, who stands his ground, on the ice surface. The goon skates off, laughing. He goes to the bench for a drink. Jonathan and Tyler turn and help Patrick to his skates. He thanks them.

JONATHAN
I won’t let anything happen to you, Lil Peekaboo! I’ve got your back!

PATRICK
Like always?

JONATHAN
Like always, buddy!

TYLER
And I’ll try to stick up for you as well, Kaner!

PATRICK
Thanks.

They skate off, getting into position at center ice once more. Tyler and Patrick flank Jonathan. The centerman nods to either side of him and the puck is dropped again. The Blackhawk wins yet again and the trio streak off once more.

Scott steps forward and slams Tyler into the boards, rather roughly. The forward falls to the ice, but recovers, mumbling to himself in fury.

JOHN SCOTT
Watch yourself and your surroundings better next time, Segsy!

Scott heads into the defensive zone and checks Jonathan now. He falls awkwardly to the ice and screams in pain. He grabs at his leg at once. He tries to get up, but falls back down on the ice. The whistle blows halting the play. Patrick and Tyler instantly skate up to him, concerned.

PATRICK
What’s wrong, buddy?

JONATHAN
Kaner, you and Segs have to play on without me! My leg! My leg….it might be broken!

PATRICK
But Johnny, I can’t! I’ve never played without you before!

JONATHAN
You’re going to have to!

He tried to get to his skates again, but the pain is obviously too much. He shakes his head. Patrick and Tyler bend down and put one of his arms around each of their shoulders and hoist him up, aiding him to the bench.

TYLER
We’ve got you JT!

PATRICK
For you, I will try to move on, Johnny!

JONATHAN
You can do it! I know you can!

TYLER
Yeah, we’ve got this Kaner!

Patrice nods, but he is a little skeptical and doubtful and it shows.

Notes

Songs in this:
Ready to Fly - Richard Marx

I can totally see this happening with Kaner, flying down the wing singing at the top of his lung "Ready to Fly"!!!! But you know you have had wings, Kaner! :))))

Comments

I know, I know....This is why there are NO hockey musicals right? It's horrible.... :( Hockey players can't sing, aren't supposed to sing, not angelically at least, maybe rap like Versteeg, but not sing musical numbers....haha :)
