Perils

AVALANCHE!!

Christina’s POV

I yanked, pulled, and so on and so forth, I trying to get the person who I write songs about because I loved him so much. Whatever move you want to say, I did. I wanted Nathan MacKinnon, from the chains that restrained him to the tree. I wasn’t one to hate people and it is hard for me to hate him, but Sidney Crosby was getting on my nerves...big time. And now he was threatening to kill my favorite Avalanche player.

That wasn’t cool. And I did not approve of that.

I mustered all of the strength I had left and gave a sharp yank backward, but still the chains did not come undone. Maybe it was the cold that was making things too tough.

“It’s no use,” Nathan told me.

“No, no, no, no, I can do this,” I spoke with full ambition and determination. I was not going to give up so quickly - especially not in front of my crush.

“Christina, I assume, it’s okay,” he spoke, sounding completely calm and composed.

“But--”

“Christina, please, Sidney Fucking Crosby bound me with these chains...it’s useless.”

I shook off his dirty language, which was something I didn’t like, but I was able to tolerate and continued my side of the argument. “NO! It isn’t! I refuse to believe that!”

I yanked some more, trying to push back the tears I felt flooding into my eyes; the last thing I wanted was to cry in front of him. I accidentally fell forward, landing right against him and heard his beating heart racing with anticipation and anxiety. I immediately felt really awkward, but at the same time, I just wanted to hug him. I knew he was trying to remain cool, calm, and collected on the outside, but inside, he was a nervous train-wreck. The poor dude was helpless.

“Maybe it’s better this way,” Nathan spoke.

“No, don’t talk like that,” I muttered, racking my mind for an idea...anything, really...that could let me get him free. Sooner or later I knew that that avalanche would come crashing down and kill him. I couldn’t let that happen because I love this man and I always had a fun time looking at him and I’d carried a secret romantic crush on him for so long. I didn’t want to lose him. And I couldn’t picture him dead.

“Christina,” Nathan choked out. “Please, save yourself.”

I REALLY didn’t want to lose him.

“I won’t lose you, Nathan!” I reached out to grab the chains, but was instead thrown in the opposite direction by the shaking ground, as the pile of snow came crashing forward. It felt like I was in the middle of an Earthquake. I tried to get up, but it was pretty impossible to do that with the hoard of snow barreling toward the helpless Nathan MacKinnon.

“NATHAN!! NO!!!!”

Evelyna’s POV

I pinned Sidney to the wall, and gazed with horror, as the hoard of snow churned straight for the helpless Nathan MacKinnon. All bets were off. We didn’t have to watch our voice levels anymore. But, that wasn’t necessarily a good thing. I stared in horror, as Christina was flung backward, from the shaking and the snow buried Nathan MacKinnon underneath.

As quick as it all started, it was over and I saw my friend jump to her feet and desperately dig into the mound of white. How long did the Avalanche player have though? I knew that normally people could hold their breath and survive under the snow or ice for about 20 minutes, before they would pass out. I hoped Nathan was strong.

Sidney’s evil cackling brought me back to reality though. “Sucks doesn’t it...having to watch the one you love die before your eyes, a really….pity!”

I punched him in the face in fury and then slammed him against the hard rocky surface, knocking him out. I snatched up the crossbow just in case (and also so I could hurl the item into the distance to relieve some anger). I darted over to my friend and helped her out. We dug through the snow, hearing the faint, muffled screams underneath.

“Hang in there, Nathan! I will not lose you!” Christina called.

“We will not lose you!” I corrected.

The screams became more and more faint, even as we got closer and closer to him. But more snow got in the way and it was frustrating both of us to the point where my friend gave up and threw herself on the snow, sobbing.

“It’s no use!”

“We can’t give up!! He can make it!” I tried to cheer her up with some hope.

Instead she sank down and sat on the cold white snow of the Colorado Rockies.

“Come on, Christy, we need to try.”

“What’s the point? Sid has won! The bastard has won! He’s killed Nathan and there’s nothing I can do about it! I’m too weak to free him!”

“No!! I won’t accept that! We braved fire to save our brothers, heights to save Brandon Saad, some bears to save Reilly Smith, a treacherous storm with lightning to save Gabriel Landeskog...we can save Nathan from a pile of snow, even if it takes a few minutes longer!” I proclaimed. “Now get to your feet woman and dig! I need to go check on Kaner and Jonny. See if we can’t get there help and see how badly wounded Patrick is.”

I stood there gazing down on her, as she slowly pulled herself together and rose to her feet. “You’re right, Eve. You are so right! I can do this!”

“That’s my girl! I’ll be right back.”

Jonathan’s POV

I dragged my teammate into the cave and set him down. I removed my hand from over his mouth, leaning him against the solid rocky interior. He doubled over, clutching at his bleeding shoulder and finally yanked the arrow out of him with a hiss.

“I’M GOING TO KILL THAT PENGUIN!!” Patrick growled, as he grit his teeth in pain.

“Calm down, Peeks. I’m with you on that too, but right now, you need to hang in there. We need to dress that wound, cause I won’t have you bleed out and die on me, buddy!”

“I’m not going to die, Jonny!”

I helped him to take off his blood-stained shirt and then I wrapped it around his upper arm, shoulder and neck like a sling. The bleeding had ceased a little, but Patrick was a little woozy and I could tell that he was in no shape to move or do anything.

“Ow!! Damn, it hurts so much!”

“I’m sorry.”

“Why did I have to get shot with the fricking arrow?”

“Because Sidney Crosby is cruel.”

Patrick glanced down at the dressing that I had done and then snapped his head up to look at me, his dear friend. Against the background of snowy white colors, the blond could see the concern sparkling in his teammate’s eyes. He sheepishly smiled as best as he could at that.

“Thanks for helping me out Jonny, you’re the best you know that?”

“Love you too Peeksy.”

Patrick tried to move his arm up, but he drew back at once and gasped with more agony.

“Don’t move.”

Normally, Patrick Kane would bite back with a snarky comment or something, but he didn’t. Instead, he blinked and “faked” weakness. The winger lifted his arm up and in a dramatic gesture flipped it over and draped it over his forehead, like he was about to faint. “I don’t think I’m going to make it Jonny.”

“Very funny, Peeksy.”

The mountain suddenly jolted to life and it diverted my attention for a second. The cave shook and the sound of a rolling and churning pile of snow made me think that the avalanche had begun. I froze, as I thought about my sister and her friend and the poor Colorado player, who was chained to the tree, helplessly. I hoped they had got him free.

I turned back to Patrick, ready to try and aid him, so we could go see what was going on and there was no way in hell I was abandoning him alone with Sidney walking around and a killer shooter. “Let’s go check out--” I started to say, before I was cut off by a revolting and rather disturbing sound.

Patrick coughed violently and spat up blood. He leaned back. Okay, maybe he wasn’t “faking”. I launched forward and felt his forehead. He was burning up and running a high fever. My heart accelerated in my chest at once. I panicked.

“Peeksy!! Peeksy!!” I screamed.

“Jonny, the light...it’s so bright…”

“NO!!!! Peekaboo, head away from the light!! Don’t go toward it!” I grabbed his head between my hands. “Kaner, don’t you dare leave me alone!”

“It’s so...bright!”

Patrick's eyes were cloudy looking and I feared I was losing him. He coughed again. I remained clutching his head rather firmly in my hands.

“Tell Christina, she’s the best sister I’ve ever had!”

“No, Kaner. Please,” I was on the verge of breaking out. I could already feel the water in my eyes. His eyes rolled up to look into mine. The blue color was now a pale gray.

“I--I--”

“No, Peekaboo, stay with me dammit! I can’t go on without you! You’re my best friend, the best hockey player I’ve EVER seen with stellar talent, Chicago’s number one goal scorer...heck, YOU’RE BETTER THAN ME!!” I wailed.

Suddenly, I let the water works happen. I lost it.

Patrick smiled and instantly his eyes cleared back to the brilliant blue color and he lifted his good arm up to touch me, right over the heart. “You really mean that, buddy?”

“I do!”

“Oh, come here you. I’m NEVER gonna die now!”

We laughed between sobs and hugged each other.

“What a pair of drama queens...such a pity, I had to shoot you Kaner. You had so much promise!”

I whirled around to see that Sidney was standing in the entrance to the cave, blocking the exit. I immediately threw myself before my injured friend and narrowed my eyes. The heart-felt moment was gone.

“You have a horrible reputation of showing up at the wrong time, Sid!”

“Did I break up your romantic, Pocahontas moment? Huh, were you finally going to kiss and make out with one another?”

“No, we were just being friends, sharing a moment. We are completely straight!”

“Oh, don’t be a fool Jonny Boy, you know as well as I do that you want to stick your tongue into Pretty Blondie’s mouth there and suck face!”

“Shut up, Sid!” I slowly got to my feet, still making sure to stand in front of my best friend. I wasn’t going to let him shoot him again or do anything to him.

“Make me. I don’t think you got the balls to do it!”

Even though, I wanted to run him through with a sword, I couldn’t help but think that he wanted me to attack him, so Patrick was left vulnerable and exposed. Instead, I turned my head to the side and spat out my anger.

“Not going to work! I don’t let ANYone get under my skin that easily.”

“Get away from my brother you fucking piece of shit, Sidney!” I heard a female voice roar, before watching the villain smirk.

“Ah, the dashing heroine sibling comes to the rescue!” the villain sneered, as he seized an attempted blow from my sister by grabbing her wrist and halting her. She snarled in fury at him and wrenched her arm free.

“Getting real sick of your cocky ass attitude and shit, Sidney,” she growled.

“Me too!” I tacked on with her.

“Well, ain’t that sweet. Unlike most siblings you two can agree on something. Adorable.”

I watched Evelyna try another shot at the man, only to be caught be his quick reflexes again. She grunted with effort and tore her arm free again.

How were possibly going to beat Sidney Crosby? Right now he had the upper hand and Evelyna looked like she was both panicking and trying to maintain her tough exterior. She was a mess of emotions and it wasn’t helping out any. At the moment, it appeared, Sidney Crosby was winning. And we weren’t going to succeed in our mission this time. (We might even lose TWO hockey players: Nathan MacKinnon and Patrick Kane...sorry Christina!)
