Perils

Rescue and the Next Clue - Part 2

We raced to the location of the exploding hangar. We pulled up to the building, where flames licked the structure and smoke billowed out of it. My breath caught in my throat, as we got out of the car and stared in horror at the scene before us. There were police cars, an ambulance, and fire trucks all around.

“Jonny and Pat are in there?” Christina whispered, barely audible over the roar of the blazing fire. She was terrified, as was I.

“Yeah. Those poor boys!” I sighed, clenching my fist.

“Let’s get ‘em!”

We darted forward, rapidly. The blazing heat greeted our faces, as we skidded to a halt before the entrance. Inside, through the soaring flames, we spotted two men tied to chairs. They were struggling to get free.

“Jonny, hold on!” I screamed and dove into the burning building. I didn’t care or mind the heat, I didn’t pay any attention to it. I was focused on saving my brother.

Christina leapt in behind me. We picked our ways in, dodging sparks and flames, as we made our way into the middle of the room. The fire hadn’t reached them yet, thank God, but the heat and smoke was getting to them and their eyes were glossy.

I instantly yanked the tape off of Jonathan’s mouth and removed the necktie blindfold. He gaped at me in shock. “Evelyna!?” I quickly untied him from the chair and helped him to his feet. He looked mortified, as a flying part of one of the planes shot toward us. I pulled Jonathan to the side, screaming “Look out!”

Christina skidded up to Patrick and removed his blindfold. Then she yanked the tape off of his face. “Ow, easy there, Christy!”

“Would you rather I keep the tape on you?” she retorted with a wink, before pulling the knots undone to his bonds and helping him to his feet.

"I'd have kept the tape on him." It was Jonathan who had spoke.

Patrick shot him a look before turning to his sister and mumbling, “Thanks, Christy.”

Another plane part flew toward us, heading for Patrick this time. It grazed his side, making him scream in agony.

“Come on, we need to get out of here!” Jonathan yowled, holding me close to him and trying to protect me from the flames.

“Where’s the exit?” Patrick’s panicking voice came. “How can we get out without burning ourselves?”

“The key is to just go as fast as you can through it and hope!” I replied.

There were more noises that didn’t sound good at all. We glanced upward and saw that the ceiling was crumbling and pieces of it were plummeting downward toward us.

“Run!” Jonathan shouted.

We took off in the direction of the exit and dove through the flames. We all landed on the grass and scrambled forward, as the entire structure collapsed, suffocating the flames with the help of the fire department crew. We stared, wide-eyed at the rubble.

“Thank God you two arrived when you did,” Patrick commented, hugging his sister tightly.

“Yeah, otherwise Kaner and I would be apart of that pile of debris.” Jonathan nodded to what was left of the hangar in front of them. His eyes were slowly clearing and they sparkled.

I embraced him. “I’m so happy that you are okay, baby brother!”

He returned the gesture.

“Yeah, thanks a bunch, Christy.”

“It’s my pleasure, Patrick. It’s what siblings do for one another.”

We stood up, noticing the minor burns from the fire, but other than a little cleaning, we were all okay and alive.

“So what’s going on here? Why did Sid kidnap us?” Patrick asked.

I looked at the blue-eyed Blackhawk and shrugged. “I really don’t know. It’s something that Christina and I did to him, but we don’t know what.”

Jonathan gazed at me, holding a stern and leader-like look in his eyes. “He seemed pretty pissed off. Pissed enough to tie us up, gag us and almost burn us to death.”

“Well, whatever we did, he’s got no right taking it out on you. He shouldn’t have harmed you.”

The Blackhawk captain looked at me, cocking an eyebrow in amusement and chuckling light-heartedly. “Right, cause now you’re gonna get him, is that it?”

I winked at him, flashing a sly grin. “You know me too well, Jonny.”

We stood on the runway, still catching our breath and recovering, by now all the fire crew and extraneous people had left, their work done. The fire was diminished and only charred remains were left on the grass. Patrick winced, as Christina tore off the sleeves of his shirt, to wrap around his bleeding shoulder, where the plane’s propeller had hit him. She carefully pulled the knot to keep the makeshift bandage in place.

“Did you really have to tear off my sleeves and ruin my shirt?”

“Hush, Patrick! You’re a famous hockey star, if you love the shirt so much, buy a new one!”

Patrick opened his mouth, ready to draw out a comeback but froze and nodded. “You’re right. Thanks.” She gaze him a nice scolding look and smacked him on the arm, below the injury. “Ow!”

“Ooh, Kaner, you’d better not piss off your sister, she can hurt you!”

“Shut up Tazer!” The blond haired man grumbled, as he gripped his arm, surveying the damage. He lowered his head and his sister took the opportunity to grab his hair and fix it. “Christy, stop!”

“Your hair is a mess, Kaner!” she fretted. “I need to fix it!”

“Get your fingers out of my hair.”

Jonathan and I shared a look with one another. Luckily we weren’t like that, just tough on one another, pushing each other to succeed. We watched Christina chase Patrick around in circles, trying to fix his hair, before she eventually tackled him and sat on him, pinning him down. She slicked his sweaty blond locks back, attempting to make it stylish. He screamed. “Tazer, help me!”

“Sorry Kaner, looks like you’re alone in this one!”

I looked at my brother, who gradually pushed me around, so that we were turned away from the two. I gazed at him, searching his face. He wanted to tell me something, but what? As I looked at my brother’s face, I caught sight of his mouth; he had a small cut on his bottom lip on the right side, closest to my vision. I lifted my hand up and ran my thumb gently over his lip.

“You’re hurt?”

“Must’ve been when Sid had put the tape over my mouth...I can’t beleive he’d do something so horrible like that.”

I dropped my hand back to my side, whipping the blood on my shirt. “He won’t get away with it. No one who ties up my brother gets away with...especially not someone who tied my brother up AND gagged him! Oh that’s worse!”

He laughed, that typical Jonathan Toews laugh of his. Suddenly his smile vanished and he was more playing his serious role. He grabbed my shoulders and leaned down to me, looking me in the eyes. “Right before Sid left, he said something about having to go “see” Brandon Saad. Have you any news about Saader?” He was looking at me hopefully, wanting to know his teammate was okay.

That was my brother, always concerned about others, before himself. He cared about his teammates. I took a step back, my eyes widening in horror. “He told you about Saader?”

“Yeah.”

“We don’t know anything more than that he kidnapped Brandon, Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon, Valeri Nichushkin, Tyler Seguin and Reilly Smith.” I struggled not to sound so mortified about Val’s name in the list. I didn’t want my brother to know about my crush on him yet.

He looked shocked. “Sid kidnapped all of them?”

“According to his little handy note.” I rolled my eyes at the contents and Sidney’s obvious sarcasm. “When I’m through with him, he won’t be returning to the ice!”

“But how?”

“I don’t know, but Sid is one evil mastermind!”

“And a son of a bitch!”

“Right!”

We spun to see Christina and Patrick laughing together, hugging. They were coming over. They halted, wearing facial expressions that were clueless. They were wondering what we were talking about.

“We got to save Saader!” Jonathan exclaimed, much to my shock. “And don’t you dare tell me no, young lady, but I am joining you. He’s my teammate and you are going to need all the help you can get! Kaner will come too!”

“Oh, so suddenly you’re taking my voice away and making decisions for me?”

“I can literally take your voice away, I’m sure the girls have some duct tape in the car.”

Patrick folded his arms and struck a pose, narrowing his eyes at his teammate. “Don’t even joke about covering my mouth with tape. I hate that adhesive shit officially now!”

We all laughed at him, as he faked a shiver.

“Alright, let’s go save Saader and stop Sidney from destroying the NHL.”

“Alright, sounds like a plan,” I laughed. I grabbed Patrick and Jonathan and pulled them in for a group hug. Christina tacked on the end, grabbing her brother once more.

“So, where do we start?”

“That’s a good question…” I gazed out into the distance, toward the car. In the far background, over the treetops, I spotted the top of the downtown buildings. There was a helicopter flying in the sky.

Notes
