Because of Him

Chapter 5

Evelyn was the description of beauty.

Her little nose scrunched up when she smelt my disgusting gear, and her eyebrows furrowed slightly, but her eyes still lit up like the night sky. They were so big and bright, a beautiful grey color I had never seen before. Once I didn’t reply to her she blushed and looked away. Her cheeks now matching the color of her bright pink lips.
“Yeah, they are bad.” I say.
Awkward silence takes over for another few minutes.
“What are you doing here?” I ask finally.
“Well, my father does own half of this team.” She smiles shyly. “I came here with Veronique. Since she is with Marc-Andre and I don’t know anyone else…”
“Its okay.” I smile. “Im glad you came over.” I say.
“Yeah, me too.” She smiles back.
After a few more minutes in silence, Veronique comes over and takes Evelyn away.
“Nice seeing you.” I say, as Veronique pulls her away.
She smiles sympathically as she doesn’t get the chance to reply to my comment before getting pulled away and out of the locker room.
“Shes cute isn’t she.” Sidney Crosby says from next to me.
Over the past few days I had bonded with the team nicely, and coach had said that I really was fitting into the system nicely. I had great respect for the whole team, and was feeling a lot more comfortable around them and talking with them.
“Yeah.” I say bluntly.
“Oh come on Nealer. Don’t act so blunt! I saw the way you looked at her.” He smiles.
“Yeah well, shes out of my league. Maybe she will be okay for you.” I say.
“Nealsy, please.” He says. “Shes all yours. Half the team knows that already and we have seen her twice.” He says.
“I told you Crosby, shes out of my league.” I say, lying once again.
“Bullshit out of my league. That’s bullshit and you know it.” He replies firmly. True. It was complete bullshit.
“Well, shes not into me.”
“You so stubborn Nealsy!” I hear Evgeni Malkin holler in a heavy accent.
“It’s the truth G.”
“Try harder then. Stop being lazy.” He says.
“Yeah Lazy.” Kris Letang interrupts.
“Shut up guys, give him a break.” Marc-Andre intervenes.
“Thanks Flower.” I smile.

EVELYNS POV

“Well, that was terrible. What do you not understand by “Go get em Tiger.”? It means get them, not sit there like an awkward turtle.” Veronique declares.
“Well, maybe I am an awkward turtle.” I giggle.
“Your excuses are getting old, Miss Johnson.” She says, opening the door of her car and getting into the drivers side.
“Well maybe I make excuses because they are easier to say then the truth.”
I say, looking away from her as she pulls out of the arena.
“Well maybe you should speak up for what you want. I think you want James.” She winks.
“No, no. I don’t want him.”
“You’re a liar Evelyn. A bad liar.” She laughs.
“But I don’t want him.” I say looking at my fingers, fiddling with them.
“And again, you’re a liar!” She laughs before turning the radio up and singing obnoxiously.

Veronique eventually takes me home, where I am greeted by father asking me questions.
“No daddy, I didn’t do anything silly.” I lie.
“Yes daddy, I was perfectly safe.” Sort of a lie.
I went up to my room and shower, getting into my matching pink pin stipe silk pajamas, which had always been my favorite. Tonight, I decided to sit on my balcony and read a book. It was starting to get a little darker and the stars scattered the sky. I would often just stop reading and star at them. Ever since I was a little girl I had always tried to count stars, and I begged my father to put stick on stars on my ceiling once we had moved to a house without a big balcony when I was 10 years old. It was something that just really fascinated me as a child. Of course, my father obliged wanting me to rather “read a book about something educational” and instead would buy me a book about “Legal and law studies.” I would get annoyed in my mind, but act like I loved it. Then, when my father wasn’t looking I would draw pictures through all the pages.
I sat on the balcony, fantasizing about my childhood and how un-childlike it was. I never really had the chance to act like a child with my parents. They were always working and when they weren’t working they wouldn’t encourage me to play around. They were always strict on me acting like a young lady. I was a little girl; children don’t act like like “young ladies” at 5 years old.
That was one of many promises I had made to myself about how I would bring my children up.
I was deep in thought when I was interrupted by a faint clunk sound on the floor of the balcony. I looked around before brushing it off as my imagination. I heard another and another, and found three rocks sitting on the floor. I stand up looking around before peering down the balcony.
James Neal was standing at the feet of the 2-story house.
“James what on earth are you doing!” I say.
“Shhh.” He replies, putting his fingers to his lips.
He starts to climb up the garden wall and miraculously, without falling and dying makes it to my bedroom balcony. I help pull him over the railing and hurry to close the French doors leading to my room, while James stands with his hands on his knees puffing, out of breath.
“What are you doing here James!” I ask, trying to sound firm hiding the smile in my mind.
“I came to take you up on that coffee offer.” He says.
“James, you could have just told me today not at 9:00 at night!”
“I couldn’t, I dont know why, but I just couldn’t. So I came now.” He smiles.
“How did you get over the wall without the alarms or video surveillance seeing you?” I ask, seriously doubting the security of this house if a 6”2 man could climb over undetected.
“I just, uh, I just jumped.” He said shrugging.
I sigh. “Come on.” I say instructing for him to get back over the railing and climb back down.
“Are you serious? Again!” He says.
“Well I don’t see any other way.” I reply.
“True.” He says jumping over and climbing down. I do the same, jumping down and onto the ground.
“Quick, quick!” I say, running to the fence. James gives me a boast and im over. I stand on top waiting for him to meet me there, then we both jump down together.
“Nice car.” I smile at his Maserati.
“Drive it.” He says, pushing me into the drivers side after opening the door. He does up my seat belt and puts the keys in the ignition before going into the passengers side.
“James, no. I cant. Not this car.”
“No such word as cant.” He smiles. “Just drive.”
I look at him questioningly before he pouts. “Please.”
I couldn’t resist that face or the car, so I start it up and begin to drive.
“See! Your doing fine!” He laughs. “Ill instruct you where to go.” He adds.
The conversation is minimal, but there is one question really playing over and over in my mind.
“Why did you decide to risk coming to my place in the middle of the night, and practically break into your boss’ house?” I finally speak up.
He looks at me confused at first, and then a smile creeps to his lips.
“Well Evelyn, if you really need to know everything. I was laying in my bed at my apartment, when it clicked me. You had asked me to coffee and I rejected you for no apparent reason. When an absolutely beautiful girl asks you to coffee and you reject her, its not something you can easily forget. I honestly think that’s just the sort of girl you are. The unforgettable sort.
His statement makes me blush, and I keep my eyes on the road to avoid his piercing blue eyes.
“No one has ever said that to me before.”
“Im glad I can be the first.” He smiles. “I just feel like you have so much to give. You have so much hidden within this pretty show that you put on for the world. I want to be the one to bring all this out in you.” He adds.
“How do you know all this?” I say. “How do you not know if im just naturally like this. There may be nothing for me to hid.” I reply.
“Would your dad ever let you sneak out of the house? Is it something that he would allow?” James asks.
“No of course not.” I say back.
“Evelyn, that’s how I know that the way you act around your parents and everyone who knows you, isn’t the way you wish you acted. You wish you could be like this all the time.” He states proudly.
“Why do you even care? What am I to you?” I say, anxiously anticipating his answer, hoping its good.
“Because.” He says pausing. “Its because, you’re the unforgettable sort of girl.”
