21: Two Pink Lines

"I wonder what fate is gonna decide, we're just sittin' around waitin' on two pink lines..."

No, no no. This can’t be happening. He’s going to think you conned him into this; making him stick around forever. He’s going to resent you. Toss the test. Those lines don’t have to mean a damn thing.

Cassidy stared at the two pink lines as they appeared on the plastic strip. They were clear as day, taunting her with their brightness. She threw it into the trash and pulled open the bathroom door, rubbing her eyes. The past few weeks had been rough. Jamie was in and out of town, alternating between Dallas and Anaheim as the team competed with the Ducks to get to the next round of playoffs. Earlier in the night, they had played the fifth game of the series, falling to the Ducks and being one game away from elimination.

That’s when the pain started. It wasn’t unbearable like a ruptured appendix, but it was noticeable. And having felt this pain a few times within the past week, Cassidy invested in a pregnancy test, just to make sure. Although she wanted to believe that wasn’t the case, the timing did match up. Their outdoor rendezvous had been almost a month ago, and by all means, meant that she could be carrying around a Benn baby.

The two pink lines seemed to validate that theory.

She crawled into bed and pressed her hands against her stomach as if she could squeeze it away. School was nearly over for the semester, and she’d only need one more before she could graduate. Hopefully whatever this pain was wouldn’t derail her graduation plans.

Jamie hadn’t called to check in after the game, but that wasn’t unexpected. The team would be traveling back to Dallas tonight, and Cassidy knew she’d wake up with Jamie beside her or a voicemail on her phone saying he got in all right. Although the distance was taxing on the relationship, in this moment, she couldn’t have been happier for it. She wasn’t sure she knew how to explain the situation to Jamie, or even if she should. In all honesty, how reliable were those store bought tests anyways? Maybe it’d be better to wait for an actual doctor’s appointment.

“Knoxious!” Kennedy screamed from somewhere else in the apartment. Cassidy looked at her bedroom door, anticipating the moment it flew open and Kennedy stood in the threshold. “Oh no… you’re huddled in bed. Are you okay?”

“I think I’m pregnant with a Benn baby,” the words came out like vomit; quick and volatile. The sentence left a sour taste in her mouth and she groaned at the realization. Those damn pink lines.

“Jamie’s baby,” Kennedy muttered as if she were trying to make sense out of the whole situation.

“Well it ain’t Jordie’s,”

“And the test?”

“In the trash. It came out positive; clear as day. I just don’t know how valid that is. Any test that gets its results from peeing on a stick has got to be archaic. Most of all, I don’t know what to tell Jamie. He’s twenty-four for God’s sake, barely knows how to make anything other than a protein shake.”

“Jamie? Knoxious think about yourself. You’re twenty-one! Getting ready to graduate and take on the world. How are you supposed to do that with a loaf of bread baking in the oven?”

Cassidy shook her head and pushed the blankets down, “I can’t go through with this, right? Like, there are options I need to evaluate. Just a few months ago I was afraid of penises, and now I’m having a kid. That’s not how this is supposed to work.”

“Actually it is. Biologically, sex is strictly meant for reproduction. Humans are one of the few species that use it for recreation. I don’t want to add salt to the wound, but what did you think would happen by having sex with Jamie; that y’all would ride a sparkly unicorn over a rainbow? Yeah Cassidy, you have options but you have to talk to him about it too.”

Kennedy patted Cassidy’s shoulder as the only form of comfort she could offer. Just as her bedroom door shut, Cassidy’s cell phone vibrated once. She glanced at the screen, seeing Jamie’s name along with a text message, and slid her finger across the bottom, unlocking it. As she began to reply, the screen changed and she now saw that Jamie was calling. Her breath caught in her throat and she hesitated before setting it against her ear.

“Hi,” Cassidy tried to sound chipper despite the growing anxiety she felt.

“Did you watch the game?” Jamie’s voice was low as he was probably walking through the airport, getting ready to board the plane back.

“I saw the first part, but then I got… preoccupied,”

“Oh. Well, I think I’m just gonna go home tonight. We’ve got practice early tomorrow morning.”

“Alright, I’ll just see you afterwards then. We should talk, anyways.” Cassidy played with the stitching on the edge of the bed sheets absently.

After they hung up, Cassidy set her phone on the nightstand and pulled the blankets over her head. She had twelve hours to figure out how to tell Jamie about their possible child.

She didn’t want him to feel trapped; like telling him about it would be some sort of ambush and he’d feel too guilty to leave. But she also couldn’t ignore the problem. If there was a baby Benn, Jamie would find out about it soon enough. Within a few months, there would be no hiding it. Sometime between the nerves and anxiety, Cassidy drifted off to sleep before she could sort out her words for tomorrow.

Jamie was his usual chipper self the next afternoon. He ushered Cassidy into his house, kissing her cheek quickly, words coming out of his mouth a mile a minute, and all the while, Cassidy couldn’t take her eyes off of his. More specifically, his right eye, which donned a shiner and a row of stitches just below the lower eyelid.

When asked what happened, Jamie smirked, “sometimes you have to sacrifice your body.”

Cassidy pursed her lips and followed Jamie into the kitchen. She was rattling her brain for any excuse to get out of telling him about the possible lovechild. But by the look on his face, she knew he could tell something was up.

“Speaking about sacrificing your body,” Cassidy began but paused for a quick minute to take a seat on one of the barstools. “There’s really no easy way to say this, and I don’t want you to be in the dark about it because that wouldn’t be fair to you. I just don’t know if I can do it and I…” she stopped her rant and glanced up at Jamie.

“You wanna break up,” he murmured, turning his baseball cap to face backwards and then pushed his hands into the pockets of his athletic shorts.

Cassidy jumped up from her chair and walked towards him, circling her arms around his body, “God, no. It’s just that those damn pink lines have been taunting me, and I don’t know if I can have your kid right now.”

Jamie grinned and brought one hand to Cassidy’s cheek, pressing his fingertips against her skin softly. “I’m not asking you to have my kid,”

She shut her eyes and leaned in to press her head against Jamie’s chest. He didn’t pick up on it, and now, she could barely look him in the eyes. “I think I’m pregnant.” Her words trailed off, and when Jamie didn’t say anything for awhile, she peeked up at him to catch a glimpse of his reaction.

His expression remained untelling, as if any change in his demeanor would be enough to cause a rise out of her. Jamie held her loosely, “have you gone to the doctor?”

Cassidy was quick to look up at him now, shaking her head quietly. His arms embraced her tighter as he leaned back against the kitchen counter. “The test was positive and I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon, but I’ve been pretty panicked.”

“Well don’t panic. Those tests are known to be wrong occasionally,”

“So you really hope I’m not pregnant?”

She was setting him up for a test he couldn’t pass. No matter what he said, it would be wrong. If he hoped she wasn’t pregnant, it’d seem like he never really loved her in the first place. And if Jamie said he was hoping she was, it’d look like he was being selfish.

His eyes shot down at her like he knew exactly what she was thinking. Jamie took a deep breath in, mostly as a way to stall while he chose his words carefully. “I love you, and I just don’t want anything to happen that’ll jeopardize our future together, and your future individually.”

“That was very diplomatic,” she murmured, trying to make light of the situation.

“Thank you,” Jamie sighed and looked down at her. He leaned in and kissed her lips softly, grazing his teeth against her bottom lip before he pulled back.

“Will you be able to go with me tomorrow?” Cassidy walked away from him and dug through her purse, looking for her phone to check if she had any messages.

Jamie scratched his cheek and bent over the counter. “I’ve got the game tomorrow… probably be at the rink pretty early in the afternoon.”

Cassidy pursed her lips together and nodded, dragging her fingertips across the marble countertop to distract herself. Of course he wouldn’t go. That would make the whole thing too real. And she had the sneaking suspicion that he wanted nothing more than for the test to be wrong.

Four o’clock and Cassidy was sitting in the doctor’s office, hands folded in her lap with the white gown folding uncomfortably against her body. Blood had already been drawn, an ultrasound had been conducted, and now she waited for the doctor to return with the results. Jamie had asked her to keep him updated, but with the texts she had sent, they had all gone unanswered. For whatever reason, he felt like he didn’t have to respond.

“Miss Knox,”

Cassidy’s head shot up swiftly as the doctor reentered. She was now carrying a clipboard that presumably contained Cassidy’s results. Even knowing the outcome, her face seemed objective.

“Based on your blood results, you are indeed pregnant.” She paused, and almost instantly, Cassidy’s face sunk, knowing she probably wouldn’t have Jamie’s support. “However, with the other tests we’ve run, we were able to determine that it’s an ectopic pregnancy.”

“I don’t know what that means,” Cassidy muttered, biting her lip nervously.

“In simplest terms, it means the fetus is growing in your fallopian tube. Ideally, I’d like to get you into surgery tonight to ensure the tube doesn’t burst and cause more damage.”

“And after the surgery, I won’t be pregnant anymore… Don’t I get a choice?” Cassidy glanced up and clutched at her own hand. It would’ve been nice to have Jamie beside her.

“If you forego any sort of treatment, the tube will burst and could leave you completely sterile. Not only will the surgery prevent a rupture, but it’ll make it possible for you to get pregnant again.”

Cassidy sighed and rubbed her eyes, “okay… alright… let’s do the surgery.”

“Is there someone you can call to be here for you? The moral support will really help you. Maybe the father?”

She shook her head, “no, he’s working. I can call my roommate.”

The doctor nodded and wrote on the file attached to the clipboard. “Okay. I’ll schedule your surgery for nine tonight. Be at the hospital around eight to be admitted to short stay. I’ll be there along with the surgeon.”

She stepped out of the room and Cassidy bowed her head in her hands, taking deep breaths in to keep herself as calm as possible. In five hours, she’d go from pregnant to back to normal like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

After slipping her clothes back on, she dialed the apartment’s number and held back tears as Kennedy picked up the phone. “Can you come with me to the hospital? I have to have surgery tonight,”

“Sure, of course, anything… Don’t you want Jamie there?”

“He has the game tonight. Plus, I think it’d just be easier if he weren’t here for this. Let’s just tell him I wasn’t pregnant. The test was wrong, and he’s off the hook.”

When they finally hung up, Cassidy gathered her things and exited the office, preparing herself for tonight. By tomorrow, she’d be able to carry on with Jamie, in a sort of relationship that would hopefully make it.

What she didn’t realize was that by nine o’clock, as she was being led to the operating room on a gurney, she really wished Jamie could’ve been the one by her side, holding her hand until the last possible moment. However now, that job was reserved for Kennedy, and she did her best despite the circumstances.

And ten minutes later, Cassidy was out of surgery. Well that’s what it felt like at least. In reality, by the time she woke up, it was just past midnight, and glancing around the room, she saw Kennedy curled up on a cot. She closed her eyes and turned her head to the side. When she reopened them, a small smile spread across her lips.

Jamie leaned forward and reached for her hand as it lay beside her, with an IV pushing into her forearm. “Why’s Kennedy the one telling me you have to go into surgery?”

His voice was soft, but Cassidy heard him perfectly, and readjusted her head on the pillow, looking up at him, “you had the game. Plus I didn’t think you were too thrilled with the possibility of a baby Benn.”

“Do I wish you had been pregnant under different circumstances; yeah, of course. But I’m still here for you, and you should’ve called me.” He pushed her blonde, wavy hair away from her eyes gently.

“I know, I’m sorry,” she squeezed his hand as he set it back in hers. “How’d the game go?”

Jamie pursed his lips and shook his head. “We lost.”

Cassidy frowned and lifted his hand to her lips, and kissed his softly, holding his hand against her cheek. She knew enough to know this meant the Stars were out of the playoffs, officially ending Jamie’s chance at winning the Stanley Cup this year. It meant he’d be around more, but it also meant he wouldn’t be able to fulfill the childhood dream of hoisting the most prestigious trophy in sports.

“I’ll be back in Victoria by early June. I know you’ll still be in school for awhile, but you’re welcome to join me up there.” He leaned in and kissed Cassidy’s forehead, breathing in the faint smell of her perfume.

She leaned into his lips and breathed slowly. They’d be apart for some time come June, but seeing how April was going thus far maybe an extended period of time apart would be good for them. It would give them time to miss each other.

With everything that had gone on since the start of their relationship, Cassidy was stunned that they had been able to make it. In past flings, it was easy to end it when things started to get rough; like those guys didn’t matter. Now, the thought of giving up on Jamie seemed incomprehensible. For whatever reason, Jamie was a game changer. To Cassidy, he was the embodiment of strong man, and more importantly, he was a man worth fighting for.

When she woke up the next morning, Jamie was gone; presumably leaving sometime after she fell back asleep last night. Kennedy however, was still asleep on the couch. Cassidy wondered when she’d be able to leave the hospital. With his looming departure date, she wanted to spend as much time with Jamie as possible.

Notes

This chapter is titled after "Two Pink Lines" by Eric Church.

This one was a little more dramatic than most, no? :D
