Trouble in Paradise

The Night that Changed Everything

“Kellie come here please.” My best friend and roommate, Tyler called from her upstairs bedroom. “I can’t find anything to wear!” I laughed hearing the annoyance in her voice.
“You should wear that navy blue strapless cocktail dress that you bought last week. It looks great on you, just like everything else in your closet.” I laugh, making my way up the stairs to her bedroom. Tyler was every guys dream girl. She was skinny, had curves in all of the right places and was absolutely gorgeous. She knew it too. We only had a few more hours until we were meeting the boys at the new club that opened downtown, Diesel was the name. It was the last time that Tyler and I would be able to go out with all of them together until the guys and I got back from their ten game road trip. Coach Johnson was allowing me to go with them for the first time this season. He was thinking about making it a normal thing, too. I was more than excited to be able to go and I hoped he would allow me to go with the rest of the team for the season. We were starting our trip out in Chicago against the Blackhawks and we would end it in Los Angeles against the L.A. Kings.
“What are you going to wear?” Ty asked me walking out of the closet with her dress in one hand and her favorite gold pumps in the other.
“I was thinking my black long sleeved lace dress with my black pumps and that bow necklace that Geno gave me for my birthday last year.” Ty’s face lit up. I knew that she was happy with my outfit choice. Ty seemed to always know when I liked someone. I didn’t even have to tell her. I could do the same with her. I guess it’s because we’ve been friends since first grade. We’ve been inseparable ever since.
“G will love that!” I feel my cheeks get hot, I definitely wouldn’t need to wear any blush tonight.
“Ty, stop! We’re just friends. He doesn’t like me like that.” I playfully smack her arm., making sure that she doesn’t burn herself with her curling iron in the process.
“Keep telling yourself that sweetheart. That boy is head over heels for you and you know it just as well as I do. He’ll come to his senses soon enough. If you wear that dress, it’ll probably be tonight.” She laughed as I put on my favorite dress rolling my eyes at her in the process. She didn’t know what she was talking about, did she?
*FF to the club*
Tyler and I walked into the club searching for the guys, we got in pretty quickly seeing that there was a line all the way down the street. I guess that’s what happens when you hang out with professional hockey players all the time. People notice you like crazy. I spotted Sidney talking to a few of the guys right away, and snuck up behind him, placing my hands over his eyes making sure to signal the guys not to give it away that I was behind him.
“Guess who.” I whispered in his ear, trying very hard not to laugh.
“Hmm. I forget her name. Kami, Kristy, no that’s not right. Ah! Kellie. Yeah that’s it.” He laughs grabbing my hands and hugging me tightly. “ I missed you Buttercup! I’m excited I get to spend the next four weeks with you!” I couldn’t help but laugh.
“I missed you too, Bubble butt. What in the world was I thinking, four weeks with you. Oh lord.” I laugh kissing his cheek. Sid and I have quite the friendship. We can joke about anything and call each other every name in the book and nothing changes between us. He was my best friend and I was his. I absolutely love it. I noticed Geno out of the corner of my eye not too far away from us. He was dancing with some random blonde.
“Sid, who is that?” I ask pointing over to Geno and the random female. Sid’s face turned sour in an instant. “Oh, her. That’s Geno’s new girlfriend, Oksana. None of us like her. She’s definitely a puck slut. He brought her to the game about a week ago, she went out with us after and was a complete bitch. She threw her drink at Tanger’s baby sister all because she looked at Geno. I thought Tanger was going to go crazy on her. A few of us did go off on her though. ” He wrapped his arm around me protectively. “I need a drink.” I say more to myself than to Sidney. I feel his eyes on me as I walk away.
“Can I get a vodka on the rocks and two shots please.” The bartender nods and hands me the drinks. “You alright?” I jump, not expecting to hear his voice. “What are you doing here?” My voice sounding more panicked than I would have liked for it to. “ I came with friends but once I saw you I couldn’t resist myself. I miss you, Kellie.” He moves closer to me. “You need to leave, now. I don’t want anything to do with you. I will call the cops.” He grabbed ahold of my arm gripping it tightly. “Bitch you wouldn’t dare.” He growls shoving me against the bar, slipping his knee in between my legs. He was a lot closer than I would’ve liked. Being in the same country as him wouldn’t be far enough away. “Get off me! You’re hurting me” I try to squirm away but he just grips me tighter. I noticed Evgeni looking at me. I mouthed “help me.” but he just turns his attention back to Oksana. “Look, just let me go and you won’t get hurt.” If I was lucky I could stomp on his foot with my heel. It hurts more than you’d think. This makes him laugh. “You heard the lady.” I know this voice, it was Sid. This isn’t what I wanted at all. “You got lucky this time.” He whispers squeezing me tight, before walking out. I knew I’d have a I nice sized bruise on my back and some on my wrists and arms in the morning. I was thankful I decided to wear my long sleeved dress afterall. I noticed Beau, Kris and Jordan had come over and were standing beside Sidney.
“Are you okay?” they all asked me at once. I may have laughed if it were under a different circumstance. I just nod, trying my hardest not to cry. Geno saw and he just ignored it. I don’t understand. I thought that we were friends. “Did he hurt you?” Sid asks clenching his jaw. “No, thank you all for helping me though. I don’t want to think about what would’ve happened if you guys hadn’t been here.” I knew what would have happened, but they didn’t need to know about any of that. I hug and kiss each of their cheeks. “I saw. You ok?” I heard his thick Russian accent before I even felt his presence behind me. “Fine. Just fine.” I stay trying to stay calm. “You no look fine.” He places a hand on my back. Instantly that spot warms, the butterflies start to make me nauseous . I try not to flinch at his touch, but I know they all noticed. “Evgeni I said I’m fine.” My words were a little bit too loud and harsh. I also used his first name, something I only did when I was mad at him. “Why mad?” He asks taking his hand off me. The spot where his hand was turns cold all of a sudden causing me to shiver. “I asked you to help me and all you did was go back to that girl. I’m supposed to be your best friend, Evgeni. I needed you and you weren’t there for me!” I can feel myself getting heated now. I didn’t even realize that I was no longer sitting on the bar stool but I was standing in front of Geno, my finger poking his chest and hard. I know it was hurting my finger more than it was hurting him, but I really didn’t care. My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest. Geno raised his hand and I instantly moved away from him flinching. He gives me a hurt look, but quickly blinks it away. “I busy. I no time for you. I have Oksana now. She love me. I no need you now. We happy. You damaged anyway.” He screams at me, mostly in English but he mixes in some Russian. He does that when he gets frustrated. I let his words sink in. Geno doesn’t need me anymore. He doesn’t want to be in my life anymore. I feel my heart breaking. The man I love doesn’t feel the same. I pull the necklace off and throw it at him. “Here, give that to your puck slut.” I yell. In a flash Evgeni is in front of me, his face inches away from mine, his chest touching mine, and furious as ever. Sidney and Jordan were holding him back while Beau and Kris were holding me back. I knew I could probably break through them if I really wanted to but I didn’t feel like fighting them. “Get him away from her.” Sunshine, aka Beau, yells at Sidney. He nods in return. I watched as they took him up to the VIP area where Flower, Max and Nealer were sitting. Sunshine and Kris let me go. I signalled to the bartender indicating I needed another round. I quickly downed the shots and my vodka, and told the bartender to keep them coming. Tonight was going to be a long night. I could feel it. I knew Sunshine and Kris were sitting on either side of me now. Maybe this road trip isn’t such a good idea. “I need some fresh air.” I whisper in Sunshine’s ear. He gets off his barstool but I push him back down. “No, you stay here.” I slur. He looks unsure but lets me start walking. I don’t get far before Nealer is at my side. “Where ya goin baby girl?” He asks getting close enough that I can smell his very delightful cologne. “Outside. I need some fresh air. I feel like I can’t breathe in there.” He nods following me out.
“I’m sorry about what happened tonight.” He says after standing awkwardly next to me for a bit. “It’s not your fault. It’s mine. You know, I’m starting to wonder if going on this road trip is even a good idea. He doesn’t want me here.” I put my face on James’ chest wrapping my arms around his waist. “You know what, he’s an idiot. I don’t know what his deal is. Don’t worry about him, okay? We want you here with us. You’re our good luck charm. We need ya.” He smiles. “Myself, Sid, Staalsy, Duper, Sunshine, Kris, Kuni, Flower, Max, Sutter, and Maatta all want you with us. Don’t let some idiot ruin your time with us.” I laughed. “You’re calling your friend and your teammate an idiot.” You have known him a hell of a lot longer than you’ve known me. Why are you on my side about all of this?” I feel him laugh at my words. “Well he happened to hurt someone ++that I care a lot about, so yes he’s an idiot. Plus you’re my baby girl, remember? “ I nod, James’ would never let me forget the nickname he had given me. It wasn’t as bad as some of the others so I was fine with it. “Let’s go back inside. I’m getting cold.”, and so are you. You’re shivering.” He wraps his arm around my waist. I follow him in and into the VIP area. My heart feels like it will explode. What if Evgeni is still up there. Maybe I’ll get lucky and he won’t be there. Unfortunately, I’m not lucky at all. Him and Oksana were there. She was on his lap with her tongue down his throat. It made me sick. I grabbed the shots from the table and downed all six. Nealer clearing his throat in the process. Oksana shot us a death glare getting off of Geno’s lap. If looks could kill Evgeni and Oksana would have both killed me. Duper grabbed my hand and pulled me into his arms. “How’s my favorite lady?” He asked kissing my forehead. “Don’t let your wife hear you say that.” I laugh hugging him. “I’m alright, just trying to forget tonight.” He nods and I know he understands. “Oh, I saw Tyler she left not too long ago, she said something about bringing Sunshine back to your place.” I groan laughing. Thanking him for the information. That was something I really didn’t want to walk in on.
After an hour I couldn’t stand the glares anymore. “Guys I’m going to head home. I’ll see you bright and early in the morning.” I kiss their cheeks not even bothering to look in the direction of Evgeni and Oksana . I feel his eyes burning holes in my back as I walk down the stairs. “Kellie! Wait up!” Staalsy yells. I turn towards him, smiling. “I heard Sunshine went home with Ty and I know you’re not going back there. Where are you really going?” I really hadn’t thought that far into where I was going to go. “I actually wasn’t sure. I was probably just going to rent a hotel room and hope I could get back home and to the airport early enough.” I nervously laugh. Staal just shakes his head in disapproval. “You could stay with me tonight. I don’t want you to waste money on a hotel especially when you have nicer places you could stay.” I blush, kind of embarrassed. “I don’t want to intrude. I’m fine staying in a hotel.” Jordan shakes his head grabbing my hand. “Come on, you’re coming with me.” He smiles and walks me to the car, helping me inside. Arguing with him was pointless, once he had his mind made up, he was going to get his way. If I liked it or not.
“Here you can wear these tonight. They’ll be big but I don’t have anything else and I know that sleeping in your dress isn’t comfortable.” He laughed handing me a shirt of his and a pair of his sweats. The shirt had Property of the Pittsburgh Penguins on the front and Staal with the number 11 on the back. His sweat pants also had his name and jersey number on them. “Is this so you don’t lose them?” I tease, slipping my dress off. Jordy has seen me in a bikini so my bra and underwear wasn’t much different. “Woah, Kellie are all of those from tonight?” He asks eyeing me. “What are you talking about?” I ask oblivious to his question. “All of those bruises.” Oh, those. I had completely forgotten about them, thanks to the alcohol. “Did he do that to you?” Jordy asks clenching his fists. I knew he was angry now. I took a few steps back. “Jordy can we please not talk about that right now?” I ask giving him my puppy dog eyes, I know he couldn’t resist them. That’s usually how I got my way when it came to him. He had a soft side when it came to me. “Fine.” He sighs. “We are going to talk about it though.” I just nod, knowing I would have to come clean about it sooner or later. Jordy wouldn’t leave the subject alone until I told him. “Just promise me you won’t say anything to the rest of the guys. Please, Jordy.” I say slipping his shirt on. “I promise it will stay between us. The guest bedroom is currently filled with Jared’s stuff and I’m sure it’s a mess so you can take my bed and I’ll take the couch.” My eyes widened. There was no way I was kicking him out of his own room. “Jordy you take your room and I’ll sleep on the couch. You’ve already done me a huge favor allowing me to stay here with you tonight. I insist that you take your room.” I felt pretty confidant and hoped that he would listen to me. “Kellie the decision is final, you’re taking my room. Now go get ready for bed, we have to be up early in the morning.” I kissed his cheek and thanked him for everything he had done for me tonight. Saying goodnight I made my way up the stairs and into his room, climbing into his giant comfortable bed. It didn’t take long before I was fast asleep.
I shot up from the bed, placing my hand on my chest, feeling my heart beat rapidly. I lifted the shirt I was wearing an ran my fingers over the scar that was somewhat faded now. I had another nightmare. They were all the same. I was at the bar with the guys, having a good time when I was pulled out into the alley. The man would shove me against the wall pressing his body against mine, every time I’d struggle he’d hit me. I could see his fist coming, I dogged it and he ended up punching the brick wall behind me. I smirk to myself, he deserved it. “You think that’s funny bitch?” He stated before connecting his fist with my jaw a few times, before shoving me to the ground. “Do you think it’s funny now?” He asked kicking me in the ribs four, five, six times., knocking the wind out of me each time. I collapsed on the ground and tried to breathe normally. Man did it hurt. I felt myself being flipped over and then a sharp pain. I put my hand on the spot and felt something warm. It was blood. He had cut my stomach with what I assumed was a broken beer bottle. “Not so funny now huh bitch?” He screamed at me before someone tackled him. It was Kaner.
I looked at the clock on Jordan’s nightstand, it was only two thirty in the morning, we didn’t have to be up until six. I threw the covers off and made my way down the stairs quietly. Jordan was asleep on the couch, the tv was on and playing some stupid infomercial. I always hated those. Jordy and I would make fun of them on nights that I’d stay and neither of us could sleep. I sighed. “Jordy, wake up.” I whispered nudging him lightly. He didn’t budge. “Jordy, wake up! “ I said a little bit louder and pushed him harder. His eyes instantly came open. “What’s wrong?” He asked frantically. I couldn’t help but let out a little laugh. “I had a nightmare and I can’t sleep. Will you come up and lay with me? Pretty please.” I begged. He sighed. “Alright come on.” He laughed getting off the couch. I noticed he was only wearing a pair of sweatpants. The muscles in his arms and back glowing in the light of the TV. I couldn’t help but stare a little, they looked so good. I wanted to run my hands over his muscles but I wouldn’t dare. I followed him up the stairs and into his room. He laid down on his side and I snuggled up to his chest. He placed his arm around me. There was something about Jordan that made me feel safe. “I don’t know what I’d do without you, Jordy.” I whispered , not thinking he’d hear me. “I’m always here for you baby. You can come to me no matter what. You know that right? I don’t know what that nightmare was about but I promise you that I won’t let anything bad happen to you or anyone hurt my girl.” I could only nod, I didn’t trust my voice. I knew I’d cry if I tried to talk. Jordy and I fell asleep shortly after. I I was curled up next to him with my head on his bare chest and his fingers were running through my hair. I don’t think I’ve slept that well in a very long time.
