Fate Has A Way

Chapter 12

{Back in Maddi's POV}

"Zach, Maddison was there the night of the wedding. She was in the back watching the whole thing. She left before the reception in the rain. She was in a car crash," I heard Ally telling Zach.

I couldn't believe she was telling him that, why would she tell him that? I had made her promise never to tell him that. Why would she betray my trust like that?

'I really need new friends' I thought to myself.

"Why? Why would you tell him that Ally?" I found myself croaking out, before I could stop the words from coming.

I found myself looking between them but they were hard to see with the tears blurring my vision. Alison actually looked ashamed that she got caught. Zach, well he just looked surprised mixed with a little bit of pity. And that's exactly the look I didn't want to see. I needed to get out of there before I said or did anything I regretted. Plus I think I had, had enough of Zach Parise for one day. I turned and quickly made my way down the hallway to find my daughter and get out there, hearing Ally call my name from behind me.

I found Maddison in the den playing with another little girl. The girls back was to me so I didn't get a good look at her. Also I was in such a hurry to get out of there, I grabbed Ava's hand and started to walk to the front door.

"Come on Ava. We've got to go," I said, as I tugged her along.

I could feel her resisting a little bit. But at the moment it really didn't mean anything to me in my upset state.

"Maddi....... Maddison stop...... Will you stop," I heard Zach behind me.

Which only caused me to pick up my pace and get out of the house faster. It seemed to take forever to reach my Tahoe. I hastily picked Ava up and put her seat in the back, vaguely aware of her crying herself. I shut her door and hurried around to the drivers side and starting up the Tahoe and pulling off as I saw Zach reach the door. And probably yelling my name out. It was like one of those déjà vue moments, me driving aay from Zach in tears again.

"Daddy, daddy, I want my daddy," Ava cried, from her seat.

"Ava stop please," I said, keeping my eyes on the road.

"Daddy, daddy, I wannnnnnnt myyyyyyy daddy," she kept crying.

"Ava please settle down. There's nothing to be upset over," I said calmly, turning a corner.

"DADDYYYYYYYYYYY," she wailed.

I cringed at the loudness of her wail. I was slightly confused at her sudden "daddy" outburst. I wasn't sure what could have caused her outburst. I mean she obviously could tell I was upset, but when I had been upset before she had never acted like this. I knew I needed to keep calm though and not lose my cool with her.

"Ava please. We'll be home in a minute. Than you can tell me what's the matter," I said.

"I want my daddy," she whimpered.

I furrowed my brows together in confusion as I turned onto our street. Ava had never acted like this for Ryan. She had never referred to him as her daddy, it had always been Ryan. Also when she was really upset she had never sought him for comfort, it had always been me she had come to.

"I want my daddy, I want my daddy, I want my daddy," she continued to chant.

"Avalon that's enough please stop," I finally snapped, turning into our driveway.

I heard her whimper in the back and sighed. I balled my hands into fists and rubbed them into my eyes hard.

"Ava mommy's sorry she didn't........" I said trailing off, as I turned around in my seat.

My eyes widening as they landed on my daughter, except it wasn't my daughter sitting there. There sitting in Ava's car seat was another little girl with snot coming out of her nose and tears streaming down her cheeks. With little whimpering noises coming from her throat. My eyes raked over the little girl. I could see my mistake she was the same age as Ava and had the same hair color, though this little girls hair was a little darker. When her eyes meet mine I felt my breath get caught in my throat, her eyes were the same brown as Ava's, the same brown as Zach's. Looking at this little girl she could easily be mistaken as Ava's twin. This must have been the little girl the teacher was talking about and she was right, they looked alike.

'Oh god what have I done?' I thought, swallowing the lump in my throat.

Just as I was about to try and comfort this little girl, I jumped slightly clutching at my chest as a knock came on my window. I turned my head and saw Zach standing there, with a 'Are you going to open the window' look. I pushed the button to open the window.

"Hey baby girl you ok?" he asked, looking at the little girl in the back.

I looked back at the girl and saw her nod and looked back at Zach. He was looking back at me.

"Can I have my daughter back?" he asked, with a smirk.

"Y-yeah sure," I said nodding, my voice shaking slightly.

I watched as Zach walked around my Tahoe and got out and followed him around as he opened the back door and pulled the little girl out. The little girls arms wrapping tightly around Zach's neck, as he held her and rubbed her back.

"God I'm so sorry Zach. I have no excuses, I had no idea that I grabbed your daughter," I said nerviously, as I felt my knees shake and leaned back on my Tahoe and ran a shaky hand through my hair. Looking down at my feet, not wanting to see if he was angry.

"Hey, hey it's ok. It was a mistake. There was no harm done. I mean I probably would have made the same mistake had I been trying to get out of there as fast as you," he replied.

I looked up to see if he was serious or not. He was still stroking his daughters back, but was looking at me. I didn't see a hint of anger in his dark orbs.

"Zach I just...." I said, not sure what to say.

"Hey like I said its ok. Nobody was hurt. Right Mari your ok, aren't you?" he asked.

I was slightly confused as to who this "Mari" person was, I didn't know any Mari. Than I noticed his daughter nod her head.

'Ahhhhhhhh that's Mari, duh' I thought.

"Maddison this is my daughter Mariann. Mari this is, uhhhhhhh..... My friend Maddison" Zach said introducing us.

"Hi Mari it's nice to meet you," I said to the girl.

"Hi," she replied, looking at me through her bangs.

"Mari, Maddison is Ava's mom" he explained.

I saw Mari's little face light up just like Avalon's did.

"Shit Avalon. I guess I need to go back to Ally's and pick her up," I said, rubbing the back of my neck.

"Uhhhhhh actually she's in my truck. I hope you don't mind. I thought I would save you the trip" he said, turning and walking to his truck.

"Thanks Zach," I sighed, following him.

"No problem," he responded, opening the back door on his truck.

I stepped around him as he stepped back to let me by. I found Ava sitting there next to a little boy, with a big smile on her face.

"Mommy you forgot me and took my friend instead," she giggled.

"That's not funny Ava," I scolded lightly, but couldn't keep the smile off my face.

"Sorry mommy," she replied.

I pulled Ava out of Zach's truck. Than looked back at Zach, who was watching us with a weird look on his face.

"That's my son Michael," he said, nodding at the boy.

"He's a cutie. They both are. Are they twins?" I asked.

"Yeah they are," he said, with a huge smile.

As I watched as he stood there with his daughter rubbing her back, I could tell he was a good dad. I had always known he would be a good dad one day. I could tell he adored and loved his kids. I felt a pang of jealousy run through me. Alisha was lucky, she had a great family, a great husband, and kids.

"Well I guess we should get going. I need to get them dinner and than bath time," he said, breaking me from my moment of jealousy.

"Right sorry. I didn't mean to keep you. I'm sure Alisha's waiting for you all to come home," I replied, nodding my head. I noticed something flash in his eyes at Alisha's name.

'Hmmmm wonder what that was' I thought.

"Again I'm so sorry Zach," I said.

"It's ok....... Hey Maddi, I uhhhhhh..... I'm sorry I cornered you in the store this afternoon and acted the way I did. I really am happy to see you, it's been a long time. You look really good. But uhhhhhhh, we need to uhhhhhh sit down and talk sometime. You know catch up," he said.

"Yeah sure. That sounds great," I replied, almost giddy at the thought of spending time with Zach.

'No, no bad Maddi. He's a happily married man' I thought.

"How about coffee tomorrow?" he asked, looking nervous.

"Sure sounds great," I smiled.

"Great," he said happily.

Ava and I watched as Zach strapped his daughter into her seat and than drive off. I sighed and Ava and I went inside to finish up this long, long, long day.
