What’s Wrong With Dustin Byfuglien? (Based on a Dream)

Forward: Come on, you all know me. I jump at every little thing, so...get ready for another dramatic story about and answer to the question, “what is wrong with Dustin Byfuglien?” Ready? No. Don’t care...here we go…

Dustin Byfuglien was playing out of his mind. Literally. He lined up Dallas Star after Dallas Star and slammed them into the boards hard or hit them with a borderline open ice hit. Luckily no one had suffered any injuries yet, but he was pissing Jamie Benn, the Captain of the Dallas Stars, off.

Coach Lindy Ruff told his players to ignore it and play their game, which they did end up doing. But the latest shift left Jamie even more angry. Byfuglien had targeted the young Russian and was going after him. He’d failed with a check so far, one that sent him reeling into Winnipeg bench.

Val had told Jamie that Byfuglien had threatened to take his head off. And that was enough to send the Captain of the Stars over the boards and straight for the Jets’ number one defenseman. He wanted to find out what was on the man’s mind to be playing such a rough and dirty game.

But Tyler got to him first.

“What don’t you pick on someone your own size, Buff?!” Tyler snarled. “Leave Val alone!”

Byfuglien spat on the ice. Jamie skidded to a halt as the whistle blew. Tyler cross-checked Byfuglien in the chest with his fists and stick. The big man flashed his teeth at the younger Star and growled at him, cross-checking him back. “I hoped you’d come to your teammate’s rescue eventually, Seguin.”

Jamie watched them and took a step forward. Tyler stepped back, curiously flummoxed. Byfuglien’s head snapped up and he gave Jamie a chilling dark look that made him freeze in his place.

Then Byfuglien shot his arm out and grabbed Tyler around the neck. He snapped his head to look at the struggling forward, who was now terrified. A sly smirk crept onto his face. It wasn’t a good smile at all and Jamie knew that he had to help his teammate out, but he couldn’t move.

And this wasn’t Dustin Byfuglien. This was more like a possessed, demon-infested Dustin Byfuglien. If it was even the Jets defenseman at all.

“W-what do you want with me?” Tyler gasped in the grasp of the big man.

“I’m so glad you asked…” Byfuglien grabbed Tyler’s wrists now, letting go of his throat and dragged him rapidly past Jamie and the others.

Jamie lunged for the man, but he was shoved to the ice with a quick gloved hand. Tyler pulled at Byfuglien’s hand furiously, exclaiming, “Let me go!” Byfuglien stormed down the tunnel with the forward and flung him into the visitor’s locker room. Then the door slammed shut and locked in place, trapping them both inside.

Jamie scrambled to his feet once more and launched for the tunnel, screaming out Tyler’s name. He bolted down the tunnel as fast as he could on his skates, shoving the Jets players out of the way. He reached the closed door and found it locked. He instantly rammed his fists into the door loudly. “Byfuglien, open this door right NOW! And let Tyler go!”

There was no response, except a strange sounding, “JAMIE, HELP!!” Jamie slammed his body against the door attempting to break it down. Before he could actually break it down, the door swung open and Jamie toppled over on his skates. He gasped and pushed himself up at once to see Tyler in Byfuglien’s grasp.

Tyler’s wrists were bound together by black duct tape and so were his ankles. He had some of the same adhesive around his mouth. He was struggling to get the tape off of him but Byfuglien cackled at his helplessness.

Tyler’s skates had been stripped from him and he was only wearing his jersey, shorts, and his socks. The helmet and gloves were missing, back on the ice, along with his stick.

Jamie got to his feet, narrowing his eyes. “Who are you?”

Byfuglien smirked darkly. “Why, Jamie Benn, I’m Dustin Byfuglien.” His eyes glowed a beady red like a dragon’s.

Jamie clenched a fist. “You’re not Dustin Byfuglien! Buff doesn’t kidnap hockey players and tie them up!”

“He can if I want him to!” a voice sneered from the side of the room.

Jamie spun to see Michel Therrien standing in the shadowy part of the room holding a roll of duct tape in his hands. The Captain for the Stars gasped, “You!?”

Therrien nodded and flashed a wicked grin at him. “That’s right, Jamie.”

“But I thought you were…” Jamie started, before trailing off in his bewilderment.

“Coaching the Canadiens? Nah. They’re fine without me. I let PK do his thing and sit back really. And besides, I was thinking of recruiting this big guy for the team.”

“And you’re recruiting him by controlling him and making him kidnap Tyler?” Jamie questioned, turning back to watch Tyler still fighting his bondage.

“Well...no...actually the Tyler thing is more about something else. Speaking of which, Dustin,” Therrien stated, gesturing to the big defenseman. “Please put Tyler Seguin in the trunk of my car. Okay?”

Byfuglien nodded and launched Tyler up and over his shoulder. Tyler screamed and tried to kick himself free but Byfuglien and Therrien had wrapped him up good with the tape.

Jamie took a step forward. “What do you want him for? You can’t take him! Let him go now!”

Therrien shook his head, as Byfuglien continued on his way out of the room. Jamie took off after him, trying to help his linemate out, but the big defenseman was out of the room, and before Jamie could escape as well the door flew shut and locked once more.

Jamie frantically jiggled the handle of the door. “NO! TYLER!!” He spun around and leaned against the locked door as Therrien paced forward, peeling back the end of the tape roll. “Therrien, whatever you’re thinking about doing...don’t?!” Jamie gripped the handle in his hand tighter, making the palms of his hand turn a pale-ish white.

“You know my secret Jamie and I can’t have you fighting me or stopping me now…” Therrien sneered.

Jamie released the handle. His goggles were in the other locker room, so he couldn’t power up to become Star Vision...he was trapped. He could attempt to fight back...but Therrien wasn’t a normal human being that was obvious the moment he’d made the door slam shut.

“What do you mean...secret?” Jamie tried to ask, stalling for some time.

“Stalling isn’t your thing, Jamie...or maybe I should just call you Star Vision...huh?” Therrien sneered, yanking a strip of tape off the roll and readying it.

Jamie eyed it. “H-how do you know…”

Therrien kicked out and slewfooted Jamie. The Captain of the Stars crashed to the ground. Instantly the coach for the Canadiens wrapped the tape around Jamie’s wrists and then swiftly moved to bind his ankles together. Jamie kicked and screamed and tried to fight back, but Therrien was skilled and smart. When Jamie was restrained with the tape, Therrien wrapped his upper arms together and then hauled him away from the door and over to the visitor’s goalie’s stall.

Jamie eyed the evil man, full of hatred and perplexment. Therrien stepped back. “Star Vision, Scorpion’s going to pay for what he did to me. I’m sure you know now that I’m a supervillain… please, call me Magnadien.”

“What did Tyler do to you?”

“Wouldn’t you love to know...but I can’t tell you...now Star Vision, I’m sure your little Russian teammate, Star Shot or something like that, will come get you. That’s great, but by that time, I’ll have Tyler in my lair, dangling helplessly over a pit of hungry sharks. Good luck.” With that, Therrien wrapped the roll of tape around Jamie’s head and over his mouth.

Jamie moaned and struggled in the tape, while Therrien withdrew and walked out of the locker room, closing the door behind him. Jamie grunted in frustration and threw his head back. He had to get free and get to Tyler. Whatever he’d done to Therrien, Jamie was certain that Tyler didn’t mean it or Therrien was being oversensitive. Either way, Tyler was innocent.

A few minutes passed by before the visiting team came into the locker room with a few Stars players, including Val. The poor little blond Russian looked scared by all of the Jets players, who appeared to be intimidating him. Jordie, Eakin and Roussel kept an eye on him though and showed him that it was okay.

“There Jamie!” the Russian exclaimed. “Why Jamie tie up?” He walked over and unwrapped the tape from Jamie’s mouth.

Jamie gulped in air. “Arrow Hawk, thank God! Scorpion--Scorpion, he’s in trouble.”

“Scorpion?” Val and all the Jets players questioned.

“Black Scorpion.”

Val’s eyes shot wide. “Oh! Oh, Black Scorpion….Scorpion in trouble? We must help! Yes! Yes! We must!”

“Get this tape off of me, Arrow Hawk!”

“Arrow Hawk?” the Jets players echoed with bewilderment.

“Why Jamie tie up though?” Val repeated as he tore the tape off of Jamie’s wrists, arms and ankles.

“It’s a long story. I’ll tell you and everyone back in the locker room. I don’t trust Jets players anymore.” Jamie shot a dark look at the Jets players watching them.

Val nodded and then helped his Captain to his feet. He stood grinning innocently. “Val do good? Arrow Hawk help Jamie!!” He clapped his hands together like a little kid getting extra for dessert.

Jamie patted him. “Yes, Val. Now come on, we need to get to our locker room and track down Michel Therrien. He’s the one who controlled Byfuglien and kidnapped Seggy.”

Val nodded his head. He jumped up and down and then followed Jamie out. Jamie shot the Jets players all dark looks.

“Keep an eye on your defenseman better!” the Dallas Star growled.

Val grabbed Jamie’s jersey and quickly sprinted after him. Roussel, Eakin and Jordie were waiting in the hallway. Jamie stormed back to the ice with Val clinging onto him. They launched onto the ice and skated over to the home tunnel that led to their locker room.

“Val, you don’t have to hang onto me anymore, sweetie,” Jamie remarked with a slight chuckle.

Val let go and bit his lip, grinning his clueless grin. “Sorry. I scared of mean Jet players.”

Jamie wrapped an arm around him and they walked into the locker room. Jamie explained what had happened and then he and Val walked to their stalls. They undressed themselves quickly, leaving on their jerseys though and put on a pair of blue jeans. Val grabbed a small case from his locker’s shelf and pulled it down, setting it on the wooden seat. He opened it up and grabbed some kind of collapsable object. With a rapid and practiced flick of his wrist, the object became an archer’s bow.

Jamie grabbed a case from his stall’s shelf and withdrew a pair of green star goggles. He put them on. “Ready Arrow Hawk?”

“Ready Star Vision!” Val’s response came as he strapped his quiver full of arrows onto his back. “Let get Scorpion back.”

They slipped on some tennis shoes and darted out of the room together to cheers from their teammates.

Jordie stopped them at the door however. “You two need some help from me?” He whipped out a large machine gun like from a Terminator movie.

Jamie laughed. “Nah, Jordie that’s okay. If anything, we can reach the Zvezda and the Hockey Avengers. We can save Scorpion - just the two of us, I think.”

Jordie put his gun back in place, which went into a strap on his back. He nodded his head. “Go get our goal scoring superstar back boys!”

Jamie winked at his brother and then darted out of the room, with Val at his side.

“Where Therrien at?” Val asked.

“Somewhere close by Dallas...I’m sure of it. He said something about taking Tyler to a lair of his and dangling him over a shark pit.”

“Uh...too big of words, no understand Star Vision.”

“Sharks...not good. Tyler will get eaten by Sharks,” Jamie simplified for the confused Russian.

“Oh!” Val exclaimed. “Oh, that no good...poor Scorpion...”

Jamie and Val burst from the arena and into the players’ lot. They headed for Jamie’s car and got in. Then they zoomed out of the lot, with Jamie configuring buttons in his vehicle. Val reached for the radio dial and turned on the music.

“Zvezda said that this car could track down any Hockey Avenger. She had it designed… well… designed to never lose you, Val. But this is our best option for finding Tyler.”

Val nodded. “I no understand completely what you say, but it sound good to me!”

Jamie turned on the tracking GPS and then stepped on the gas and they zoomed down the highway. Soon a location was found and a red dot showed Tyler’s whereabouts. It wasn’t too far away from the AAC, in fact, it was in the heart of the state.

And Jamie knew exactly where the dot’s location was telling him Tyler’s whereabouts were...AT&T Stadium!

Michel Therrien bolted from the American Airlines Center and found Byfuglien standing by the trunk of a slick black cliche villain car. The lid was still propped open and inside, Tyler squirmed and struggling in his restraints. He attempted to say something to Therrien.

“So sorry your friend had to get in the way of something you did...but maybe next time you wanna “tweet” about the Habs...maybe don’t tweet anything bad, especially not to me…” Therrien snarled and slammed the trunk shut. He rounded the car and hopped into the driver’s seat. After he got everything ready, he turned to Dustin Byfuglien, still standing loyally outside. “You’ve been a wonderful help, Buff. If ever the Jets are too stupid to keep you, feel free to knock on my door and tell me. Bergevin and I can work something out...for now, you are dismissed.”

Therrien waved his hand and then stomped on the gas and zoomed out of the lot. Byfuglien shook his head and turned to watch the car leave.

Dustin whispered, “What have I done…Jamie’s going to kill me.” He headed back into the arena and walked to the Jets’ locker room. He found his teammates there, all lit up with conversation. He spotted the remains of Jamie’s tape bondage on the ground. The Jets players seemed to be talking about Jamie Benn, who wasn’t there anymore it seemed. He went over to his stall and immediately slumped down into it and covered his face with his hands.

Meanwhile, Therrien zoomed onto I-30, the Tom Landry Highway in Texas and left Dallas, heading for Arlington Stadium. He pulled into the parking lot and acted as though he knew what he was doing and where he was going. Then he parked by the entrance and got out, popping the trunk. He rounded the car and pulled Tyler out and dragged him into the stadium.

Tyler tried to fight, letting off muffled distress grunts in the process which made Therrien cackle evilly. The Canadiens’ coach hauled the Dallas Star across the eerily empty field and over to the far goal post. There, he dropped Tyler and walked back to stand on the endzone’s line. He threw his arms out to the sides of him and slowly raised them up, making sure his palms were facing up.

Tyler watched him, curious, before he remembered his predicament and began to work the adhesive binding him. He kicked at the ground desperately, not really caring if he was messing up the Cowboys’ nice grassy field.

Therrien lifted up the benches on either sideline and threw them into the air with a loud grunt. The benches flew across the field and landed at the entrance, blocking anyone from entering. Tyler gulped nervously now. The villain spun around and smirked at his hostage. He walked back to Tyler and squatted down to look him in the eye, grabbing a handful of his brunette hair.

“Oh, Tyler Paul Seguin, look at what you are reduced to? You may be a superstar goal scorer on the ice and Black Scorpion off the ice, but that’s no excuse for your cute little “anti-”tweets. You need to be more mature, more professional...even on social media.” Therrien roughly let go of Tyler hair and proceeded to bind him to the pole with his handy roll of tape. He secured the Star to the pole tightly around his upper arms and around his knees. Tyler attempted to move and get out of the tape, but found little wiggle room.

When he was taped to the pole securely, Therrien pocketed the tape roll once more and walked off, vanishing from sight.

After a few seconds passed, a thunderous machine-like sound echoed around the stadium and then the grass around the pole pulled back and a decent-sized circle or water was made around it, with Tyler helplessly in the center.

“Feeling smart now, Scorpion?!” Therrien’s voice boomed over an intercom. “Go ahead and scream, I encourage you to...tweet away behind the black adhesive you tweety-bird!”

Tyler spotted the ominous shape of a shark fin swimming in the water and he screamed in panic. Where was Jamie? Surely he’d be here by now...unless Therrien had killed him?! Oh no, Therrien had killed Jamie! Tyler’s mind mind spiraled in the panic. He wasn’t Black Scorpion or Scorpion right now; he was just plain old Tyler Seguin. Scorpion was brave, Tyler wasn’t as brave...

“Mmmmee!!” Tyler tried to scream out his Captain’s name as a shark leapt from the water at him. He squeezed his eyes shut.

Jamie and Val made it to the parking lot of the AT&T Stadium a few minutes after Therrien had bound Tyler to the pole. They got out of the car and Jamie was furious as he stormed toward the entrance.

Suddenly a bright light flashed in front of him and an annoyed looking Zvezda appeared. She had her arms folded over her chest and her wings were beating like mad to her emotions. “Jamie Randolph Benn, what do you think you are doing going in there alone and with my precious Arrow Hawk as “backup”?”

“Oh, Zvezda,” Jamie moaned, skidding to a halt and losing his fierceness.

“Don’t “oh, Zvezda” me, Star Vision. Its a good thing that I’m programmed to know when the Dallas Stars are in distress. I take it that it is Scorpion who is in trouble, given the talented little spy isn’t here right now?”

Jamie hung his head. “Yes. Byfuglien was targeting Stars and he threatened Val. Tyler went after him, before I could and Byfuglien dragged Tyler off the ice. When I went after him to help Tyler out, he had Tyler bound and gagged with tape.” Jamie snapped his head back up and his lips pursed with some kind of determination. (His eyes were shielded by his “star vision”.)

“Classic Scorpion…” Zvezda growled.

“I tried to save him, but Therrien showed up.”

Zvezda’s wings stopped flapping madly and she froze. An icy look came over her eyes, like she’d been touched by Iceshot (Gabriel Landeskog). “Therrien? As in Michel Therrien? The Habs’ coach?”

“Yeah. He said that Tyler had done something to him and he was getting payback for it.”

Zvezda smiled. “Awesome! I’ve been looking for some excuse to go after that French Canadien bulldog of a coach. Come on, let’s get him!” She spun around and led them to the entrance. Val and Jamie shared a look and shrugged. They heard her groan and then saw her lift her hands up and blast purple cosmic energy from her hands.

After a second, she flew into the stadium and hovered inside, gasping. Jamie and Val skidded in with her. Jamie had a finger to his goggles, while Val had his bow up at ready, with an arrow inserted in place.

“Tyler!” Jamie gasped, dropping his hand at once as he saw the perilous Tyler taped to the goal post across the field.

Zvezda dropped down to where Val stood. Jamie stepped forward but he was suddenly wrapped up with a bendable yellow object...the goal post. Zvezda jumped in front of Arrow Hawk, who raised his bow up.

“Я получил это, Звезда! (I got this, Zvezda!)” Arrow Hawk snapped.

“Вал, нет, вы получите себе больно ... или еще хуже! (Val, no, you'll get yourself hurt...or worse!)” Zvezda retorted, reaching out to grab his bow.

“Для Джейми! (For Jamie!)”

Arrow Hawk shouldered Zvezda to the side and let an arrow fly into the air. She recovered quickly and spotted the arrow coming back straight at the archer. She dove and tackled Arrow Hawk, just as the arrow zoomed down and stuck itself into the ground.

“Я сказал вам не делать этого!! (I TOLD YOU NOT TO DO THAT!!)”

“Извините. (Sorry.)” Arrow Hawk hung his head.

They both scrambled back to their feet.

Zvezda patted him on the shoulder. “Подумайте Вал! Пожалуйста, не делайте это снова. (Think Val! Please, don't do that again.)”

“Я думал ... Я извиняюсь, Звезда. (I thought...I'm sorry, Zvezda.)”

Перейти помочь Джейми, я собираюсь найти Therrien и получить его задницу! (Go help out Jamie, I'm going to find Therrien and get his sorry ass!)”

Arrow Hawk nodded and darted to help out Jamie, who was struggling in the grip of the goal post. Zvezda launched into the air and looked around. “Now, where are you Therrien…?” She scanned the arena.

“Arrow Hawk, just go get Tyler. Leave me...it’s useless to try and overpower Magnadien’s powers!”

“Zvezda tell me--”

“Get Tyler!” Jamie shrieked.

Val backed away and turned to see two sharks jumping at the terrified Dallas forward. Val looked back at Jamie and then up to Zvezda, who seemed to have figured out Therrien’s location and was zooming toward the press box, where the announcers were broadcasting the games. Then he glanced back at Jamie.

“Go Val, go!” Jamie urged.

Val nodded and darted toward the hole. He grabbed an arrow from his quiver and inserted it into his bow. He let it fly at the shark that leapt at Tyler. It hit the target and the animal fell back into the water, with no harm to Tyler. A second shark leapt from the water, but Arrow Hawk shot him down as well.

Tyler chanced a look and saw Val standing at the edge of the water with his head cocked to the side. He was looking at the water as though trying to figure out how to get to Tyler. “Mmm!?” Tyler tried to call out his teammates name.

“Tyler!! Scorpion! Arrow Hawk come, save day. With Zvezda and Star Vision too. Arrow Hawk find way to get Scorpion free...but shark...sharks, no good.” Val shook his head. “How get Tyler safe? How?”

Suddenly a loud crash made Val snap his head toward the direction of the noise. Zvezda exploded from the box holding tightly to Therrien. “YOU BASTARD!” She hovered him above where Jamie was. “Release Star Vision and then you’re going to pay for attempting to hurt Arrow Hawk! NOBODY HARMS MY ARROW HAWK!!”

Therrien kicked at her, but she made it so that his efforts were futile. “And if I don’t?” the villain dared to say.

“You really don’t wanna try me,” Zvezda scoffed.

Therrien raised his hands up. “You do realize I have powers right?”

“I do. You’re like an uglier version of Magneto. And you can certainly try to use your metallic powers on me...but I guarantee that they won’t work. See, I have the “Power of the Stars” and my cosmic energy can blast through metal. That’s why you don’t wanna mess with me.”

“You’re bluffing,” Therrien shot and manipulated one of the steel beams in the ceiling of the stadium to break off and shoot downward. “But I’m not going to test you…no, let’s see your precious Arrow Hawk try to get free from the metal!”

Zvezda turned to Val, who was unaware of the metallic object flying toward him. “ARROW HAWK, RUN!!”

Arrow Hawk spun around but before he could move, the metal wrapped around him and he dropped his bow. Therrien sent three more scraps of the AT&T’s ceiling at the poor archer. One was wrapped around Val’s ankles, two around his arms, pasting them to his sides and another around his head.

“Therrien, let him go!” Zvezda growled, flapping her wings sharper behind her. Her face darkened in color.

Therrien was amused. He flicked his hand and Arrow Hawk was moved to the edge of the shark pool. “You can save him...or make me free Jamie...who do you care about more?”

“BOTH!” Zvezda kneed the villain in the stomach and then in one quick motion, she slammed the Canadien’s coach into the gigantic JumboTron and whipped up a black hole. “Oh, and I learned a new power too! I’ve been saving trying it out...but you’re pissing me off too much!” With that, Therrien was sucked but not before he made Arrow Hawk fall into the water.

Zvezda closed the black hole with a wave of her hand and zoomed down to the water. She blasted the sharks heading for the helpless winger and then snatched him and pulled him from the cold liquid. The metal fell off of him, no longer controlled by Therrien and soon they were joined by Jamie, who was slightly rattled still from being held captive by the goal post. Zvezda air-dried Arrow Hawk with her wings and kissed him endlessly.

“Oh, baby,” the heroine said between kissed. “I’m so happy you’re okay.”

“Звезда, пожалуйста ... остановить его. (Zvezda, please...stop it.)”

“Zvezda, Tyler,” Jamie reminded the love-struck redhead. “You’re the only one who can get to Tyler and free him.”

Zvezda turned from Arrow Hawk, who was blushing deeply and grinning largely. He snatched up his bow and his quiver and put them back into place on his body. She nodded and flew over the pool to Tyler. She rapidly freed him and carried him over to Jamie.

“Thanks, Zvezda,” Tyler gasped, weakly wrapping his arms around Jamie, who had instantly thrown his arms around his teammate.

“Anytime, Scorpion. But please stay out of trouble. What did you do to Therrien anyway?” Zvezda asked, folding her arms.

“I kinda...sorta...uh...tweeted something about him.”

Zvezda shook her head. “What did you tweet?”

Tyler took in a deep breath and then said, “I just said something like, ‘@CanadiensMTL When the Habs lose, will Head Coach Michel Therrien take a job with Disney On Ice?’ But I wasn’t meaning for it to come across as a diss, I was being playful...besides, Star Vision told me to tweet it!”

Zvezda turned to look at Jamie. “Is that true?”

“Yes.” Jamie hung his head, slowly bobbing it up and down. “I’m so sorry Tyler, I didn’t think it through...I take the blame. I’m just glad you’re okay.”

“It’s okay, Jamie, I forgive you. Besides, I knew you wouldn’t let Therrien kill me. You love me too much. For that I am thankful, no sarcasm buddy. You’re the Toews to my Kane.”

Jamie smiled at Tyler, who put an arm around his friend. “You’re the Kane to my Toews.”

“And, I Nichy!” Val exclaimed with a big smile.

Everyone laughed.
