Prove Me Wrong.

'Kieran's POV'

They say first impressions are important, that they set the tone for the entire relationship, so after tonight I'm hoping whoever said that was a lying bitch. Jamie had been gone for a week, playing a streak of games in Canada and the day he came home just so happened to be the day his parents were flying in as well. Yeah, so I met the parents tonight and although dinner went seemingly well and they appeared to like me I'm sure I made an interesting first impression to say the least.

For my first act, I was late to dinner and I felt terrible about it! An emergency surgery, (poor dog got hit by the UPS truck, and by some Christmas miracle he survived!) ran way over my usual shift and by the time I got home to change after running into the crazy Dallas traffic I knew I was going to be late. I scrambled to get dressed nothing too fancy we were just going to a steakhouse, as I struggled trying to put on my jeans on in a flash I called Jamie to explain myself.

It rang twice before he answered with an abrupt, "Where are you?" Out of breath from running through my apartment like a mad woman, I managed to get out a quick slew of words not even bothering to form sentences as I finished dressing, "I'm coming I promise, emergency surgery, I am so sorry, they're going to hate me. Oh God, I'm leaving now. I am so sorry. I'll hurry!" He was laughing, "Babe calm down, it's fine. Don't drive like an idiot, and you need to breathe doc, they aren't going to hate you." I was now in my Jeep, driving as quick as possible to Jamie, "Okay well we'll see, I'm on my way now. Tell them I'm sorry" "Calm down Kier, you're worrying me. Quit saying sorry, you're starting to sound Canadian." Even when I was freaking out Jamie could somehow get me to laugh, we hung up as I weaved through the hectic streets of Dallas. I pulled in the parking lot, parking my Jeep next to Jamie's truck, as I got out of the vehicle I stood in the cool air looking at my reflection in the side mirror, I took one last big deep breath before going inside.

Jamie's parents were adorable, his mom hugged me as soon as she saw me and his dad made sure to embarrass Jamie for not calling me "beautiful" in my description. It was definitely clear that Jamie was the baby of the family, as they talked about the things he did as a kid and how his older siblings picked on him. They seemed genuinely interested in my line of work, after I explained and apologized profusely for why I was late. Jamie laughed at my nervous spiel, "I guess that's what I get for dating a doctor." I nudged him with a smile on my face.

For my second embarrassing moment my phone began to ring from inside my purse, with the setting it's on the only number that is allowed to make noise is the clinic, and Jamie knows it. As the sound poured out and I stared at the bag Jamie spoke, "You know you have to take it." I nodded grabbing the iPhone, "I am so sorry, it's the center." I told his parents before taking the call.

'Jamie's POV'

Kieran was clearly freaking out, and for no reason because even if she didn’t think so my parents loved her. They loved her before even meeting her, everything I had told them about her made them fall for her just like I had. She talked with them smoothly, her accent a little thicker with her nerves until her phone started ringing. Uh oh, I knew that sound it was work. I got her to take the call and I could tell she felt horrible. "Dr. O'Reilly," she answered in an unhappy tone and I looked to my parents. My mom spoke up, "Does this happen often Jame?" I shook my head no, "No, she's just on call today and tomorrow for the afterhours clinic. Hopefully she doesn’t have to go in." My dad laughed, "You two are quite the busy pair! Good to know you've got someone with their head screwed on straight Son." I smiled at my dad "We're both busy but it makes our time together better, and she loves her job she can't wait to graduate," With that my mom smiled, she knew I loved Kieran who was still on the phone now talking about amputation.

'Kieran's POV'

"Well I don’t want to amputate until I've seen the new scans, his body needs to rest we just did a 3 hour surgery on him." The UPS dog had made a change for the worse and was now nearing amputation of his hind legs. My colleague wanted my opinion before performing the surgery, "Email me the scans I'll look at them and call you back John, no I'm not coming in just to look at them I'm at dinner." He apologized and agreed to email me the scans. Hanging up I ran my fingers through my hair before looking at his parents, "I am so sorry, I-" Jamie's mom cut me off, "Oh honey, stop your job is very important, and we totally understand! You're saving lives Kieran. Do what you need, besides listening to that was interesting you're like a human textbook." My face turned red, and I laughed a little, "Thank you, one more call and I should be done, I'm not anticipating a surgery until tomorrow."

As I predicted the dog didn’t need emergency amputation, it could wait until tomorrow so I was off the hook and free to enjoy what was left of our dinner. Small talk about our plans for Christmas and New Year's, and about my parents who they would be meeting tomorrow night at the Stars game rounded out the evening. In the parking lot I hugged Jamie's parents goodbye and gave Jamie a hug and a quick kiss, "I'll see you after the game tomorrow," He nodded and kissed my forehead, "Goodnight babe, by the way they love you." he whispered before pulling away, I smiled at him one last time before getting into my Jeep. I could only hope they liked me because I more than like their son.
