Long Way Home

Holly POV

I walked into my house and it was eerily quiet. Jamie’s shoes were not in their usual mess but instead placed properly on the rack. I walked into our bedroom and saw that my side of the bed was messed up from Jamie sleeping on it. What really caught my eye was the green pop of color from a jersey on our bed. Before I picked it up I knew what it was, it would have been our sons first jersey. I picked it up from where it was laying in our bed and walked back towards the nursery. I put the jersey back in its spot running my hand on it to get rid of the wrinkles. The rest of the afternoon passed in a daze as I tried to busy myself until Jamie got home. I made supper but didn’t feel like eating. I watched the game and as soon as it ended I felt the time speed up, counting the minutes until I knew he would be home soon. My body was shaking with anxiety.
My heart stopped when Jamie walked through the door. I didn’t know what to expect, would he be mad, would he yell? I was so tired of all our yelling and fighting.
“Jamie” I said as I turned to face him. I was going to tell him I was tired of fighting, I was going to tell him I just wanted to forget the last month but he cut me off.
“Holly just listen to me okay? I need to tell you this and if you want to yell at me after you can yell at me all you want. “ He started “I love you okay, I love everything about you. I love the way that when you take my truck you leave your Taylor Swift CDs. I love the way you sleep on my side of the bed when I’m on the road and I love the way you make the new guys feel at home. I love the way you run your hands through my hair when you know I’m having a bad day. I even love the way you put everyone’s needs before yours. The thing is it’s that about you that I hate the most too. I love you so much and I am terrified at even the thought of loosing you. I want this baby I really do but I’m scared that something will happen, something like last time. That’s why I panicked last night, not because I don’t want this baby but because I do,” he said running his hand through his hair. He must have been thinking about this all night because it was stressing him out.
“Okay Jamie” I said getting up and grabbing his hand. I pulled him to the couch and curled up to his side.
“Okay?” He said slightly confused.
“We both want this baby Jamie and in the morning we’ll figure out the plan but right now I just want to cuddle with my husband,” I said as I lifted his arm around my shoulder. I felt his body unwind almost instantly, I’m sure he had been tired of all the fighting too. We sat there mindlessly for a while, the TV playing but neither of us watching. Jamie was twirling a piece of my hair between his fingers and I was counting his heartbeats.
“I love you too,” I said after a while.
“Hmm” Jamie said and I could tell he was half asleep.
“Before you told me how much you love me, I just wanted to tell you I love you too” I said getting up from the couch. A whimper escaped Jamie’s lips but went away when he noticed I was going to pull him so we could go to bed. We were about to round the corner to head up the stairs when we heard the front door unlock. We both turned and Jamie shifted so he was in front of me. It was late, who could it be. Our questions were answered when Tyler walked through the door.
“You guys make it really obvious where you hide your key” He said as if he could read our minds.
“Okay” I answered as I followed an angry looking Tyler into the kitchen. I shot Jamie a quick look but he shrugged his shoulders. Me and Jamie sat on the bar stools and Tyler paced back and forth not saying anything.
“Ty?” I asked after a couple minutes had passed without a word.
“Who’s Mark?” He asked.
“Mark?” I asked confused “we know a lot of Marks Ty”
“Mark to Sara, who is the Mark that Sara knows?” He asked and he looked like a wounded puppy.
“Oh Ty” I stuttered, how was I going to word this?
