Long Way Home

Family

Jamie POV

I sat there, me head pounding, and looked at the scene laid out in front of me. The tension in the air was thick as Holly stood there with her arms crossed over her chest looking at he sister with a stern and stone cold expression.
“What do you want?” She asked with a harshness in her tone that I didn’t hear often.
“Holly please don’t be like that with me” her sister pleased. I sat there not know what to do or say. I made eye contact with Sara briefly who was standing near the now closed door with Tyler.
“No I get to be the way I want. You and mom and day made me feel like shit so don’t expect me to be warm with you” Holly answered, holding her ground.
She was right. Holly’s family never really supported our relationship. They thought she was selling herself out for the money that she was just settling because of my paycheck. They thought I was going to cheat on her, that I was violent and distrustful. I tried everything I could to make them see otherwise but they were set in their ways. They were firm believers that they had brought up their children to be independent and to not have to rely on someone else. When Holly and me were getting married she would move with me to Dallas where she wouldn’t be allowed to work because of visa restrictions. They didn’t want her to depend on me, I didn’t see it that way and neither did Holly. Up until the day of the wedding they said and did everything they could think of to separate us. Our relationship was strong and I knew Holly didn’t doubt my love for her but hearing all these things from her family and not having their support really hurt her.
“I want to tell you I’m sorry,” her sister said almost in tears.
“Why?” Holly asked but before her sister could answer there was a knock at the door and Jordie walked in.
“Jamie how’s the noggin doing this morning?” he said before he caught sight of what was happening in front of him. He stood there, mirroring Holly with his arms cross starring daggers into the back of my sister in law’s head. The tension in the room grew tighter as Jordie moved to stand with Sara and Tyler.
“Why?” Holly repeated once the dust settled.
“Does it matter?” he sister asked, the tears had stopped.
“Yes” Holly answered.
“Because I need your help.” She answered looking down at the ground. Holly’s composure changed, she was softening up.
“And when she needed your help?” the words escaped my lips before I knew what was happening. All eyes turned to me and I couldn’t hold my tongue anymore. “Where were you when she needed her sister? You didn’t even show up at the wedding.”
“I know how she feels now,” her sister said so low I didn’t think I heard right. “Mom and dad kicked me out, I need your help Holly,” she said directing herself back to Holly.

Holly POV

“You need money right?” I asked. I should have known that’s what she wanted.
“Me and Paul broke up, mom and dad got mad and kicked me out. I have nothing.” She cried. I wanted to laugh; this was some kind of joke from the universe. In the midst of my parents accusing me for whoring myself out to Jamie for the money they neglected to see my sister was doing exactly that. Paul was some hotshot lawyer she found and tied on to. She was quick to jump on the hate train with my parents to distract them from what she was doing.
I moved around her without saying anything and reached into my purse to grab my wallet. I pulled out a check for my personal account, the money I had saved pre-Jamie, and wrote out a 10 000$ check.
“I give you this and you leave. I give you this and I never want to see you again. Don’t show up to games, don’t tweet Jamie. I want nothing to do with you,” I said handing her over the money. I knew why my parents kicked her out; she needed to learn how to live on her own.
“But we’re family” she pleaded. We both knew without someone else’s financial support she wasn’t going to last long. She never worked a day in her life.
“No we’re family” I said while pointing at Jamie, Ty, Jordie and Sara “ You are not family, family doesn’t do what you did so I want you to turn out the door and never come back. I don’t want to know you anymore.” I said and looked past her to see Jordie holding the door open for her. I watched her as she tried to think of something else she could say but when she realized it was over she turned around and stomped out of the hotel room.
“Oh god I need a drink.” I said I feel back into the bed next to Jamie.
“yeah me too” Jamie said and a murmurs of agreement came from the rest of the people in the room.
“Alright everyone up, breakfast on me. We need to get the shity-ness of this weekend behind us,” Tyler said while clapping his hands together. He walked out of the room, followed the Sara and Jordie so Jamie and me could get ready.
“Seems like the whole world is crapping on us lately” Jamie said as he started getting dressed.
“Yeah it is, but it’s gonna stop soon.” I said putting a hand on my belly. There wasn’t a bump yet but I felt different, I felt like everything was going to fall into place.
