When I Close My Eyes

Chap 1.

The rain was pouring down making a steady tapping noise against the window of the silver limousine. Karly van Slyck wiped tears from her eyes as Markus, her family's driver, got in the car. "Are you ready to leave, Miss van Slyck?" he asked

Karly nodded "Yes, Markus." she choked out.

Markus nodded and drove back to the van Slyck home from the cemetery. "Miss van Slyck, I know you probably don't want to discuss this, but Miranda Wheatley from your mother's office will be by tomorrow to discuss legal matters."

"That's fine, Markus, it must be done." Karly said. Markus nodded "Markus?"

"Yes, ma'am?" Markus asked

"Thank-you." Karly said

Markus nodded "You're welcome, Miss van Slyck."

Karly looked back out the window and watched the rain fall down the tinted glass. When she was a young girl, she and her father would pretend the droplets were having a race. Her mother thought this was a silly game, but her father enjoyed amusing her. Karly's parents were quite opposites. Her father was a whimsical surgeon, who at any moment would crack a joke just to see a smile or get a laugh. Her mother was a stern, stereotypical lawyer, who didn't have time for fun. Nonetheless, they were in love and they loved Karly. She was an only child, so her parents dedicated all of their free time to her.

Karly had gone to prep schools and could speak French and German fluently. She wasn't into sports, except that she had dated a few members of her high-school lacrosse team. She wasn't into partying or having random sexual relations with strangers like her so-called friends were. That was another thing. Karly always felt her "friends" only liked her because she had money. Karly sighed just thinking about it. She had to get away, but to where? Karly's thoughts stopped when the limo did. Markus opened the door for her "Thank-you. You may leave for the evening. I won't be needing a driver until tomorrow." Karly said

Markus nodded "Yes ma'am. See you in the morning, ma'am."

Karly headed inside and slipped her shoes off. She changed into sweatpants and a t-shirt from UCLA, where she had attended last Fall and this Spring. Classes had just ended and soon it would be time for school to begin again, but she didn't want to go back to UCLA. Karly grabbed the TV remote and sat down with a cup of coffee. She turned on the TV and flipped through the channels, she stopped on a news channel. It was coverage of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Pittsburgh Penguins had bested the Detroit Red Wings and had won the Cup. She wasn't much of a hockey fan, she had went to one Sharks game with her cousin when she was 16, but that was it. She watched the players pass around the Cup, then it dawned on her. Her cousins lived just outside of Pittsburgh. They weren't able to make it to the funeral, because of her uncle's work. Karly needed to get away from California and now she discovered her way out.
