The Friend Zone

chapter eight - caught red handed

Second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs; here we come. I couldn't believe it. After being down three games to none in the first round, it seemed we would be on our way to an early exit out of the playoffs. But Our team seemed to come together; and we won four straight. I'd be lying if I said the thought of the LA Kings being in our position last year before turning it around and winning the cup wasn't on my mind; it was all I could seem to think about.

Game one was set to start in St.Louis in two days time; our quest for the cup was able to continue. St. Louis had beaten out the Canucks in six games in their first round. The other series in our conference was the Flames and the Jets; personally, if we were to make it to the conference finals, I'd like to face the Jets, but I couldn't get too far ahead of myself yet. The series hadn't even begun.

"Another drink my captain?" Tyler asked, slightly intoxicated. I shook my head no; tomorrow we were flying out to St Louis, and I sure as hell did not want to be hungover for it. It was a slow Thursday night, not much happening at one of our favourite bars to frequent. Tyler and I had decided to go out for a few drinks, having really nothing better going on. Haley was stuck working early again, leaving just the pair of us. And of course, Tyler still wasn't leaving me alone about her. God forbid he do that, eh?

"Nah I'm good man, don't want to be hungover for the trip to St. Louis tomorrow" I told him, looking around the bar. It was slow, even for a Thursday evening. Though I suppose it was only eleven pm; not much would be going on this early, anyway.

"Pussy" he muttered, flagging down the bartender he was ever so subtly flirting with. I rolled my eyes as the girl ate up every minute of attention he was giving her; typical. I forced myself to look around the bar once more, even though there was nothing really going on.

Sure, there were a lot of attractive girls here I'll admit. And I guess sure, I could have my pick of the, if I really and truly wanted to. But I didn't. And it seemed regardless of how hard I tried I couldn't get her out of my head.

Truth be told when she saw me the other day after saving me from the nightmare of some night stand I couldn't help but wonder what she thought. Did she feel the same attraction I felt to her? Or did she really mean it when she said she considered Tyler and I like brothers? This girl was driving me crazy; but I couldn't make a move. I knew better. She had Derek, who she seemed really happy with, and I would never ruin our friendship.

Speaking of Derek though I thought to myself with a grimace... Was that him over there?

Squinting in the dark I tried to see if it was him. With shock, I realized my eyes weren't deceiving me; it was him. But he wasn't alone; and the girl he was with certainly wasn't Haley. I felt my heart pound in my chest with extreme intensity; what the hell was he doing here with another girl?

I calmed myself down for a moment; maybe it wasn't what it looked like. He was allowed to be out with friends, having drinks without it being a negative thing, right? I was about to divert my attention back to the bar, but the sight of him pressing his lips to hers stopped me dead in my tracks.

"What the fuck..." I trailed off loudly, my fists balling up. I immediately got up from my seat without thinking and walked right over to him; what did he think he was doing? "Derek! Nice to see you buddy!" I shouted over the loud music, butting in between him and the blonde chick he had been previously sucking face with.

"Oh- hey Jamie" he replied a little awkwardly. His eyes were a little wide, surprised to see me.

"Where's Haley tonight?" I asked loudly, looking from him to the mysterious blonde girl. She looked at me with daggers in her eyes; him doing the same.

"She's at home" Derek answered robotically.

"I'm Jamie! Nice to meet you....." I stuck my hand out to shake the girls hand.

"Jessica" she spoke, taking my hand and shaking it briefly before pulling it away. The name sounded familiar, and I immediately realized who she was. She was Derek's intern at the law firm Both he and Haley worked at. Really? Screwing the intern? The shit that seemed to happen in TV shows...

"Can I help you with anything? Or..." Derek finally broke the silence I assume they both took as awkward.

"Nope, just came over here to say hi" I managed to keep my cool. I must say, I was pretty proud of myself for it. As much as I wanted to punch his fucking face in. "Have a good night" I motioned to the two of them, but not before pulling Derek close and whispering in his ear. "Don't think I won't tell her"

"I wouldn't if I were you"

"Was that a threat?" I asked, raising an eyebrow in surprise. Really? Was this guy serious? He decides to be the cheating scumbag but threatens me?

"I can make your career end, you know" he pointed out, a smirk playing on his lips.

"Right, I'm so sure" I shook my head in disbelief.

"I'm serious. If you know what's good for you, you'll keep your goddamn mouth shut. And if not? Well, let's just say you don't want to know what I'm capable of. She won't even want to see your pretty face again when I'm done." he shoved his way by me, his intern in tow.

I stood frozen in place, still in disbelief. Did that really just happen?

"Jamie, what are you doing over here?" A drunk Tyler came staggering over to me. He put his hand on my shoulder, eyeing me with concern despite his inebriated state.

"Nothing. You ready to go?" I decided against telling him what I had seen, and what had been said to me. I wasn't sure how I was supposed to take his threat; could he end my career? Would he ruin it over something like this?

I wanted nothing more than to tell her; I didn't want to see her hurt. I also couldn't live with myself knowing she'd continue to be with him after what I had seen, and not told her. What the fuck was I supposed to do?

"Yeah, I got her number" he stated with trimph, waving his phone in the air. I rolled my eyes; typical.

"Way to go" I grumbled still torn up. What was I supposed to do? I knew I'd have to talk to Tyler about it, but I also knew it couldn't be now. He was far too drunk to understand; and it wasn't something I wanted to discuss twice.

"What's up your ass?" Tyler asked as we made our way to the street, waiting for a cab.

"Nothing"

"Are you still hung up on her? Jesus Jamie, either make a move or get over it"

"Thanks Tyler" I muttered, just ignoring his comments. They were something I was used to anyway.

"I'm serious, what are you so scared of?" He asked with curiousity.

"I'll tell you when you're not drunk"

"I'm holding you to that"

"So, are you going to tell me yet?"

"You're worse than a kid" I rolled my eyes. We were in the hotel in St. Louis after the morning skate. He had been bugging me all damn day about it; but it wasn't something I wanted many people to know.

"Then just tell me for fuck sakes" he protested.

"Fine. So I saw Derek last night, and he wasn't alone" I paused, wondering what to say next.

"And by that you mean....?" He trailed off, urging me to continue.

"He's banging his intern" short and sweet.

"You're kidding" Tyler shook his head. "That explains the girl he was with the other week when we all went out! I didn't see them do anything though" he racked his brain. I should have figured that's where he disappeared to.

"That's not even the worst part" I shook my head, still trying to wrap my head around the situation. "He threatened to ruin me and my career if I told Haley about it"

"Are you serious?" He asked in disbelief. I filled him in on everything he said.

"Do I take him seriously?" I asked the question I had been dying to ask somebody.

"I don't know, man" Tyler answered honestly. "That seems like a big threat for something like this"

"That was my thought too" I confirmed, slamming myself on the bed, getting ready for my pregame nap. "I'll hold off on telling her for now" I pursed my lips, wondering if that was the right decision. "Does that make me a bad person?"

"Really, it's not your place to tell... I guess. I don't know, it's a sticky situation" he laughed. "What the hell have you gotten yourself into?"

"Don't remind me" I grunted, trying to close my eyes. I didn't get much sleep last night, and I could feel the exhaustion from the previous series and morning practice getting to me. Falling asleep seemed to come easy; and for that I was thankful.

So I've been reading this story from the beginning and let me just say that I really like it. This last chapter is the first time I've ever really been put off by the end. The topic of a dying or deceased parent is touchy for me because I lost my dad suddenly at a young age. From personal experience, whenever someone brings my dad up in the middle of a fight I become infuriated! It's just a BIG no-no. You don't do that, it's just a low blow. I always feel it's slightly manipulative when a person says, 'well your dad would have wanted this,' or something like that. Frankly, I wish Haley had grown a backbone and put her foot down in this situation. Like I said I do like this story, I just wish you had handled this particular scene a little differently.

I read that Chapter 36 only now, and I think you could take a inspiration from short sexual stories about players too, there are full of tumblr. I think you surely know them, but if you read some more of them, you should learn something more ;)) sorry if I am tiresome again :D
