The Friend Zone

chapter nine - more than friendly intentions

"Stars and Blue. Game two; tonight, you in?"

"Of course I'm in; wouldn't miss it" I smile at his response.

"Come on over whenever you want, I'll order us some pizza" I thought to Jamie, Tyler and I watching games. You could never have a game without pizza, wings and beer! Absolute necessity.

"Sounds good, I'll see you soon"

I threw my phone gently on the couch, a smile on my face. Things with Derek seemed to be going really well. He was really sweet, thoughtful, and seemed to even get along well with Jamie, which was huge for me. He was one of the most important people in my life; getting along with him was a deal breaker.

Running to my bedroom, I quickly looked in the mirror, taking in my appearance. My make up needed a small touch up, but otherwise remained untouched from my long day at work. I stripped off my work clothes and slipped into something a bit more comfortable; a pair of leggings, a loose t-shirt and of course, throwing my Jamie Benn jersey over my head. I didn't watch a game without it; I was incredibly proud of my best friend.

Placing my online order for the pizza (all meat, my personal fav), getting myself my first beer of the night out of the fridge, I turned on the pre-game show.

After an amazing outcome in the first round, the Stars were aiming to build off the solid effort in the last four games of the series. Game one was a close won; the Stars falling 2-1 in OT. It was a very close game; neither team really out playing the other. Alex Steen was the hero for the Blues in OT; Seguin with the Stars lone goal.

Tonight was a new game, and I was completely confident in the team. They came back to win the series last time; I figured they had this game.

They showed the warm ups for a moment, and I found Jamie on the ice; a small smile appearing on my face. He looked intense; in the zone. The amount of hard work and dedication he put into each and every game was so admirable. Nobody would have guessed upon getting drafted in the fifth round he'd ever be one of the most underrated players in the NHL or that he'd be the current Dallas a Stars captain.

A knock on the door shook me from my thoughts. I smiled, thinking of the man on the other side of the door. I hopped with excitement to the door, smiling as I opened it.

"Hey" I greeted simply.

"Hey beautiful" he answered, stepping inside and kissing my cheek. "Met the pizza guy" he gestured to the box in his hands. I hadn't realized that much time had even passed since ordering the pizza.

"That was quick" I commented, as we took a seat on the black leather couch in my living room.

"I thought the same thing" he sat down, cracking into the beer I had left for him on the table.

"How was your day?" I asked him, the pre game show coming to a close, edging closer to puck drop.

"Sucked when you left" he commented and I blushed, trying to contain the grin I felt spreading across my face.

"How much longer were you stuck there?" I asked him. I had been off at 4pm; but he had some more work to do before he left.

"Left just before coming here" he sighed heavily, downing some more of his beer.

"How's the case?"

"I don't even wanna talk about it" he grumbled, averting eye contact. I found it strange; typically he always wanted to talk about a case, especially one that kept him at work late. But I didn't think much into it; sometimes you just didn't wanna talk about work, right?

"Well maybe I can keep your mind off it" I grinned micheviously, winking. I would be lying if I said we hadn't slept together yet. And yes, it was just as amazing as I had been hoping. But ever since the first time we hadn't done it since; and boy was I wishing that weren't true.

"Oh yeah?" He asked with an arched eyebrow. I bit my lip, slowly closing the gap between us, kissing him; gently at first. The kiss deepened, his hands wandering around my body, sending shivers down my spine.

"Game starts soon, gotta make it quick" I teased him, and he rolled his eyes.

"I think I can manage"

"Oh fuck sakes, that's a bullshit call!" I hollered at the TV, jumping up from my seat. It was a 2-2 game; only five minutes remaining in the game. It was the same as game one; a very evenly matched game. The Blues had opened the scoring on the power play late in the first, Jason Spezza evening it up just two minutes later.

The Blues regained the lead late in the second, the Stars having tied it just minutes previously, by none other than Jamie Benn scoring off a beautiful feed from Tyler Seguin. Watching the pair of them on a line together was nothing short of amazing; the chemistry they had was unreal.

The ref had just called a penalty on the Stars, a holding call from Jordie Benn. So with only five minutes left in the final frame, the Blues had the chance to put the game away; and I was nervous. I knew how much this game meant to Jamie, and now important it would be for them to head back to Dallas with the series tied at one.

"Hales, relax" Derek laughed at my reaction.

"This is important!" I reminded him, crossing my fingers as the puck was dropped in the defensive zone, a face off win from the Blues.

"You get more into this than I do" I could tell he was rolling his eyes; but I couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen.

"Shhh" I shushed him, just as the Stars iced the puck. "One more minute come on" I whispered to myself, as the Blues skated the puck back into their zone. The Blues worked the puck around the outside, not having the opportunity for a good shot. The crowd was yelling, probably for them to shoot the damn puck! They hadn't had a shot on net on this power play.

The defence an wound up for a shot at the point; but it hit Jamie right in the pads; sending him on a breakaway. I stood up off the couch; cheering for him as he skated away from the defender.

"JAMIEEEE!" I yelled, cheering loudly. He scored! Putting the Stars up 3-2 with 3 minutes left in the third period, and the power play with only seconds left. "Babe!" I yelled, kissing him with excitement.

"Fucking beaut" Derek shook his head, giving me a high five. "Your boy came up clutch"

"He's not my boy" I rolled my eyes, sitting back down beside him. The play resumed, the crowd cheering on their team loudly. With minimal time left in the game, the Blues were running out of time to tie it.

"Right"

"What is that supposed to mean?" I asked catching a bit of attitude in his voice. "Were just friends"

"I know"

"What's with the 'tude them?" I asked with a frown. Time out called for the Blues; one minute to play in the final frame. The goalie was pulled; it was no or never for St Louis.

"He has more than friendly feelings towards you, you know" my heart felt like it stopped beating.

"What? No he doesn't" where the hell was this coming from?

"I'm telling you, he does" Derek shrugged.

"Well it doesn't matter, I'm with you" I informed him. Jamie and I were friends; there was no way he had more than friendly intentions with me. I knew him; I knew him.

"Promise?"

"I promise" I answered back with a smile, kissing his cheek. I turned my head when I heard the horn sound; I had missed the last minute of the game. The Stars had tied the series.

Just finished reading the whole story and may I say it's one of my favorites! I loved the story and relationships between the characters! I hope some day in the future you chose to make a sequel!

So I've been reading this story from the beginning and let me just say that I really like it. This last chapter is the first time I've ever really been put off by the end. The topic of a dying or deceased parent is touchy for me because I lost my dad suddenly at a young age. From personal experience, whenever someone brings my dad up in the middle of a fight I become infuriated! It's just a BIG no-no. You don't do that, it's just a low blow. I always feel it's slightly manipulative when a person says, 'well your dad would have wanted this,' or something like that. Frankly, I wish Haley had grown a backbone and put her foot down in this situation. Like I said I do like this story, I just wish you had handled this particular scene a little differently.

I read that Chapter 36 only now, and I think you could take a inspiration from short sexual stories about players too, there are full of tumblr. I think you surely know them, but if you read some more of them, you should learn something more ;)) sorry if I am tiresome again :D
