Birthday Blues.

'Kieran's POV'

Growing up having a December birthday meant that my birthday was always overshadowed by the looming celebration of Christmas. Sometimes my birthday presents and Christmas presents ran together or were smaller because I had two holidays in one month. And to a kid that is the worst thing that could ever happen! But now as an adult that doesn’t matter as much especially now that I'm a hockey WAG, my birthday isn't so much as overshadowed by Christmas as it is by game day.

For the past two years the Stars have played a game on my birthday. And although they are usually home games it still makes it hard for me to see Jamie. Home games start at 7 and don't end until 10, and then you add in the media and Jamie's charity which I also help run these days, and well we just don't get to spend a lot of time together on game day. Any other day it's fine but on my birthday I'd really like to not have to share my man. You feel me?

As much as I can I try to hide my feelings towards not being able to spend time with my fiancé on my birthday, but Jamie's pretty good at picking up my vibes. And from last years' experience Jamie knows just what to do, he tries to make my day better even from across town. This morning Breakfast was waiting for me when I woke up, there was a cute note left on the bathroom mirror, and of course flowers were sent to my office. Jamie knows exactly how to make my day even when he can't actually see me.

In an effort to fill the void of Jamie, Lauren and few of our other friends went out to dinner before going to the Stars game. If you can't have your man might as well have your girls right? After a few glasses of wine and non-stop giggles during dinner we made it to the AAC, heading straight for the suite we had reserved for the night. The suite at the request of the Captain had been stocked with my favorite mint chocolate cupcakes and decorated with happy birthday banners. The perfect place to watch the man I love do what he knows best while celebrating with my girls. Now all I needed was for the Stars to pull off a win, dealing with a grouchy man was not how I wanted to spend my birthday!

By the end of the first period the Stars were already up 3-0 over the visiting Coyotes and I was sure that Jamie would be in an amazing mood by the end of the game. During the first intermission as Lauren and my two other friends Hanna, Kate and I stood on the box balcony a Happy Birthday banner appeared on the jumbotron. Soon the camera panned up to the box finding my face with ease and showing it to the 18,000 people in the AAC. “Happy Birthday Kieran! Love, the Stars” ran across the bottom of the screen, my face flushed as I waved to the crowd. As the camera panned away the girls in my box began to sing an awful rendition of Happy Birthday as Jess carried over a cupcake with a candle in it towards me, I laughed made my wish and blew out the candle.

Following the Stars blowout and all of Jamie’s after game obligations we both finally made it home. Knox ran back and forth between the two of us happy that we were both finally home for the night. After showering and changing into our pajamas the three of us curled up in our bed, the TV played softly as we talked about our days. My head rested on Jamie’s chest until he suddenly jerked from underneath me. “What the hell?” I asked as he sprung from the bed. “Your present, I totally forgot about it!”

Jamie was now in his closet which was his go to hiding spot, he returned with a box wrapped in glittery wrapping paper. Approaching the bed Jamie tossed me the box, “Sorry babe, open it up!” I grinned as I shook the box before tearing through the paper finding a box from Kate Spade. “Oooh” I cooed as I opened the lid and laid my eyes on a new grey and crème colored purse, one I had been looking at in the mall last week. Beneath the purse was the matching wallet and a phone case that said “Eat Cake for Breakfast”, one of my favorite KS sayings. “I love it thank you baby!” Jamie leaned down connecting his lips with mine, “and I love you, happy birthday Kier.”
