Being a Hockey Wife

We don't get many rainy days here in Dallas so when we do I always take advantage. Jamie left for a three game road trip yesterday so the house is pretty lonely. I'm curled up on the couch in the office working on the case some more. As an articling student I'm getting the experience of working on cases with my boss and sometimes I get to go to court with them and watch it play out. This case is a theft case where someone has been breaking into 3 hours and taking womens clothes. It's very creepy but I do this so I can help others be safe and get the justice. We are the defence on this case so it's pretty clear that the DNA matches the accused. I keep working on the case until around 2. It's still raining so I decide to turn on Netflix and watch some Suits, my favourite show. I get through three episodes when I get up and make dinner. I have hockey tonight at 7 so I quickly finish eating before heading to the arena for basically house league for adult girls. Two of the other WAGS do it. Mel does it and so does Cody Eakin's girlfriend Danielle (Danny). Usually after warming up we will do school yard pick and start playing for almost two hours. It's nothing hard, we play and take shifts when we aren't tired and then at the end we always do a shootout contest. Danny is always in the finals and sometimes Mel and I are but there are about thirty other girls that play with us from the ages 22-27. We are all mostly university players who didn't keep going on with hockey. I stopped to be with Jamie, I played for university of Dallas and was a second line winger but that was my moment of fame.

"Is your house still dirty from last week Mads?" Danny asks me.

"I made Jamie clean it up the night off while I did dishes." I shrug.

"She's the boss of the house." Mel laughs.

"I'm the boss everywhere, he's only captain on the ice." I flip my hair.

"You wear the pants?" Danny asks.

"Definitely, she kissed him first." Mel buts in. I laugh and blush a little.

"Cody and I grew up together. He put mud in my hair in kindergarten. I've hated him ever since."

I laugh. "I still can't get over how that was a penalty. Not over it." We joke around while warming up.

Soon enough we are in a full blown game. Danny and I are on the same team while Mel is on the other. Danny is my Centre while Riley is on the other wing. Riley was drafted to the CWHL but never got to play because a knee injury. She's still really good when she isn't trying as hard.

We end up winning 5-3 they are always high scoring games because our goalies are just having fun not looking for the best save percentage. We end with a shootout which I lot in the finals to Riley. I was jokingly being bitter about it after.

"I can't believe I have never won one before." I sigh while untying my skates.

Riley laughs from across the room. "You are married to the captain of the Dallas Star you get to score on him anytime you want, and I'm not talking about on the ice." Everyone bursts out laughing, including me. "But seriously what is it like being married to Jamie Benn?"

"Well he has huge hands but he makes me the happiest person on girl."

"You know what they say, big hands bigger peewee." Mel yells in the room.

I laugh. "Lets not talk about my husband's private area." I change into Jamie's sweatshirt and my sweatpants and head home. Mel is coming over to sleep over because we are lonely without our big snuggle bugs. We both have to work in the morning so we will have to get up early but we are still going to have a little wine when we get to my place. I know Jamie will want to FaceTime me and Ty will want to FaceTime Mel so we can arrange times for ourselves.

We get home and watch some more Suits while drinking some wine and having popcorn. I hear my phone go off and I know its Jamie.

"Hey Jame."

"Hey babe. How was hockey?"

"Good, we won the game but I lost in the finals in the shootout."

"She was so pissed." Mel says from beside me.

I push her off the bed. "Don't you have your boyfriend to talk to?"

"Also Jamie we talked about your peewee in the locker room." She gets into a fit of giggles.

"She's pretty drunk. Go call Ty." I yell at her. Jamie is smiling at me when I look back at the camera. "What?" I ask.

"How drunk are you."

"I have had about a bottle of wine."

"You are going to be so hungover tomorrow." He laughs at me.

"Very supportive J."

"So you talked about my peewee at hockey?" He chuckles.

"Well they were like what's it like being married to Jamie. And I answered well he has big hands, but he makes me feel like the happiest person on Earth. Then Mel goes big hands means bigger peewee. I was mortified."

Jamie laughs. "Well you have to admit its pretty big."

"STOP JAMIE." I laugh.

"I miss you."

"I miss you too J. Today was pretty boring. Tomorrow I'm going to the office instead of staying home."

"Why?"

"It gets me out of the house. Its so empty when you're gone."

"Just five more days."

"I know, I'm kind of used to it now so. But that doesn't mean I don't miss you."

"Love you Mads."

"Love you too Cappy." I giggle.

"You should get in bed Babe."

"I know thats what I'm doing right now." I walk up to our room.

"Hey Mads?" Jamie asks.

"Yeah?"

"Do you think we can handle a dog? SO you won't be as lonely when I'm away."

"Well I don't know, work is pretty demanding."

"You think about it, and get back to me."

"Okay. I will."

"Where's Mel?"

"Talking to Ty, in the office I think."

"Is she sleeping on my side?"

"No mine, I usually sleep on your side when you are gone."

"Why is that?"

"Because it smells like you duhhh." I giggle. I am feeling a little tipsy.

"You should get some sleep Mads."

"Okay Jamie."

"Love you, I will talk to you tomorrow."

"Good luck tomorrow, I miss and love you. Stay out of the box Cappy."

"Goodnight babe."

"Score me some goals would ya." I say as I doze off into sleep land.

The hardest part about being a hockey wife is that they are not in your bed sleeping with you every night. It is the biggest adjustment to not see you husband or boyfriend for at least three days at a time. I miss Jamie since he walks out the door, until he walks through the door. Jamie is my one and only, I seriously do not know what I would do without him. You have to lean on the WAGS that know exactly what you are going through when the boys are on road trips. Mel and I have sleepovers most nights and sometimes with Danny or Taylor or any other WAGS. Dating a professional athlete is a whirlwind of emotions and ups and downs. But at the end of the day, if you love the other person. It is worth it.
