Out With the Old, in With the New

Baby Toews?

Months passed, and Jon and I were spending more and more time together but it seemed like every time we had plans, Kaner would tag along and we would never get any alone time. It was like he was preventing us from being alone.

For example, the other night, I went to their game and after they won, Jon offered to go to dinner. Of course, I agreed but somehow, Kaner heard and said that he was coming too. During dinner, he insisted that Jon and I did not sit next to each other. He was so cockblocking.

But one July night when Pat was away at his parents house, Tessa and Jon finally had time alone and let's just say, they had a bit of fun.

And here I am, six weeks later in the bathroom with a positive pregnancy test in my hand. At first, I didn't even realize my period was late but I soon realized something was wrong. This is definitely not good. How am I going to prepare for the Olympics if I'm pregnant? And how is Jon going to take this? There are different options. I could keep it, give it up for adoption, abortion. But I would still have to tell Jon.

I called my doctor to book an appointment and it was my lucky day because someone just cancelled their appointment so they could book me for 3PM today. When Riley woke up, I told her and she was jumping up and down of happiness.

“How are you so happy right now? I am pregnant!”

“Yeah, with Jonathan Toews baby. Do you know how many women want to be you right now?”

I laughed. "What do I do, though? Do I keep it? Abortion? This is really bad timing for a baby."

"I know but let's take baby steps here. First you need to find out if you are actually pregnant. Go to the doctor's."

"I booked an appointment for 3 today."

"Wow, you're quick. Do you want me to come with you?"

"Yeah, if it's ok with you. And if you're going to get ready in time, you better start now cause you have five minutes before we have to go."

Riley took a record 7 minutes to get ready but we weren't late for the appointment so it was ok.

"So what brings you here today, Tessa?" Dr. Geller, who has been my doctor since I was six, asked.

"Well, I think I'm pregnant."

"Really? Then let's check you out."

She put the cold gooey stuff on my stomach and pointed out my baby. "Yup, there's your baby. Have you and the baby's father decided what to do yet?"

"Well, that's the thing. He doesn't know yet."

"Oh, well once you decide what to do, give me a call so I can help you along with your pregnancy or with any other path you take. Take care!"

In the car, Riley decided to speak up after a few minutes.

"Are you going to tell Jon?"

"I have absolutely no idea. I mean wouldn't it be easier to go with abortion so it's out of our lives? But then on the other hand, I would be killing our baby. This is too hard."

"I think you should tell him so that you two can figure it out together."

"I want to tell him but I don't know how!"

“Invite him over and just tell him. It’s his baby too.”

“You’re right, Ri. I’ll invite him over tonight.”

“Good. I’ll be at Shaw’s place if you need anything.”

“Ooh. So you and Andrew, huh?”

She blushed but then smirked. “What can I say? My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.” I laughed and with that the topic of babies was over.

When we got back to our apartment, I called Jon and asked him if he wanted to eat dinner at my place and he agreed except he insisted that we eat at his place.

When I arrived at his apartment, he already made food and we were eating while talking.

"So how have you been? I haven't seen you in a while." He asked me.

"I'm fine. Just been busy you know?"

It was quiet for a minute as I leaned on his chest.

"I have something to tell you." I paused. "I'm pregnant."

His face told me that he was shocked. He didn't say anything for a while as he was processing it all in his head.

"What are we going to do?" He finally spoke.

"I don't know. I found out this morning and went to the doctor's this afternoon. I'm about a month and a half in the pregnancy. The baby could not have come at a worse time."

"I know, and we're at the height of our careers."

"It's a big sacrifice for me to keep the baby, you know that but it's our baby."

All night, we came up with ideas as to what we will do with this baby but neither of us mentioned abortion.

“There’s always abortion.” Jon muttered. We could not find a solution to this problem.

“No. I am having this baby.” I sat down and cried. That could mean that I might not be able to compete in the Olympics.

“Hey. I know it’s hard. You’re making big sacrifices. It’s your choice. If you want to compete, there’s abortion and no one would blame you. I will support you, whichever one you choose.”

“Thanks Jon but I just have no clue what to do.”

I cried into his chest and fell asleep, hoping to find answers in my dreams.
