My Skies Are Turning Black

Long, Hard Goodbyes

*Berlin, Germany*

I walked out of the hotel room and shut the door tightly behind me. I checked my watch as I walked towards the elevator. 3:15PM. Perfect. I had just enough time to get to the airport two hours before my flight back to the States. I headed out the front doors of the hotel to my driver waiting for me with the airport taxi. He smiled as he opened the door for me.

"Hello, Mr.Crosby. All ready for your flight tonight?" He asked as he carried my bags to the trunk for me.

I smiled. "Yeah. Germany was a nice vacation, but now it's time for me to get back to work." I fastened my seat belt and pulled out my phone. I had 12 missed calls from Geno, and 1 text messages from my mother. I opened IMessage and could practically hear the worry in her voice as I read her message.Sid, have you double checked that you have your passport and all your things? You better not forget anything. And travel safe, okay? Call me as soon as your flight lands. I'm very worried, stay safe! xoxo

I sighed as I read her message. She always got worked up over the little things. I've traveled many times, and I was certain tonight wouldn't be any different.

*Berlin Schönefeld Airport*

"Ughmom, dad, can you let me go now please? I’ll be late for my flight!” I looked over at the grand clock behind my parents for the millionth time. It was 5:00, and my flight to the States was scheduled for a 5:45PM take off time. I hated how their goodbyes had to be so agonizingly long.

“Okay, okay Harley. It’s just, you’re going back to the States and we won’t get to see you for a whole year!” My mother exclaimed, while fixing my long blonde hair. My parents are Canadian scientists, but have lived and worked in the States for eleven years, then moved to Germany and have been working here ever since I was born nineteen years ago. I was their one, and only beloved child. My mother stepped back and took a long hard look at me, before pulling me into a hug.
“Well, I guess we should let you go, now.” My dad said as he wiped tears from his eyes. I nodded, and with one last wave, to my parents, I headed to my gate.

I sat down on a seat and double checked my handbag to see if I had everything I needed. A group of children gathered around the guy sitting across from me caught my eye as I went through my purse for my passport. I looked up to see why. The children, all twelve of them seven or eight years old, were getting autographs from this guy. The young guy, who had to have been in his twenty’s, was signing what looked like hockey cards for the children. Huh, he was probably a famous hockey player or something. I had no idea who he was.
A few minutes later, the call for boarding was announced and I boarded and got comfortable in my seat. I pulled out a magazine from my carryon bag and waited for takeoff. This was going to be a long flight.

*3 hours into the flight*

I woke up and straightened up in my seat. Looking over at the flight info on the screen in front of me, I groaned as I realized we still had four hours left in the flight. I closed my eyes tight and attempted to fall back into sleep, until I felt a tap on my shoulder. I opened my eyes and looked over expecting a flight attendant, but instead was greeted with a child. Ah, he must be another hockey fan. He asked me if I could sign his Sidney Crosby hockey card and I nodded, as I took the card and sharpie from him. He ran back to his seat with the biggest smile on his face, as his parents thanked me from two rows back. Since I failed to fall back asleep, I began to watch a movie on my IPad to pass the rest of the flight time.

I ripped the headphone out of my left ear as I heard the panicked voice of a flight attendant as she announced the plane will be forced to make an emergency landing. My heart immediately sank. Shit. What where the percentages of emergency landings that went well? I just so happened to read an article on this statistic a couple days ago and now my mind was blank. What the fuck are you supposed to do in an emergency landing? I was drawing nothing but blanks. Everything I had ever learnt about airplane safety wouldn’t come to mind. I looked over to see panicked passengers all around, some crying, with air hostesses comforting them, assuring them that we would be fine. I picked up the faint smell of smoke as I closed my eyes. I took a deep breath, and braced for whatever could be next.
