It's a Girl's Game

Chapter 30

And the New York Rangers take game three! And again Jamie Jokinen does not score a goal due to goalie interference the really was never there.

Jamie was standing in front of her locker being bombarded by media. Questions ranged from the typical ‘Do you think the penguins can turn this series around?’ to the ‘Do you feel the officials in this game are calling every little thing against you?’ Jamie was able to answer every without saying something really rude.

“Fleury’s been keeping us in the game, we just need to find a way to get some pucks past Lundqvist,” Jamie said.
“Do you feel the Penguins should have won this game?”
“Yes, of course. I always feel we should be able to win every game, but obviously that doesn’t happen. That’s all I have to say on the topic,” Jamie said biting her tongue.
Jamie plopped down on the seat and let out a sigh.
“So, how much did you not say?” Steve asked.
“I didn’t say the fact the refs are blind and Lundqvist is a French clown,” Jamie said.
“Mime.”
“Fine, mime,” Jamie said.
“Would you really say that?” Sid asked.
“Probably,” Jamie shrugged.
“Why? You would get into so much trouble,” Sid said.
“Constructive criticism,” Jamie said, “and I have a big mouth.”
“We know,” a couple guys said.

Jamie stepped up to take the face-off in the Rangers zone. It was on her strong side and she knew what she wanted to do: shoot the puck off the face-off. There was a minute left and the penguins need a goal to tie it and force overtime.

Jamie grabbed the puck once the ref dropped it and shot the puck at the goal. She didn’t even see the puck go in, all she heard was the buzzer and a Swede swearing. The swearing was what made her smile. She also heard some stuff that should never be repeated.

“Yo, Lundqvist, keep your crown. I’d rather be a lion than a king any day,” Jamie said skating towards the Penguins bench.
“Show ‘em Jay!”
“Atta girl!”
“Lets go boys, let’s win this game!” Jamie yelled.

The game ended up going into overtime and it was 10 minutes in when Jamie got a breakaway. She was going to shoot when she felt something slam down on her right wrist and her skate caught an edge and want skidding into the boards.

She lost the puck in the process but right now Jamie was more concerned about pain running through her arm and head. Jamie got up and made her way to the bench and she knew her night was done. It didn’t even matter since the Rangers ended up scoring on what could only be called goalie interference

“I don’t want to talk to anyone,” Jamie muttered slamming her glove into her locker.
“Jamie it’s not your fault,” Sid said.
“Really? Why do you say that?” Jamie asked already knowing the answer.
“Because that should have been a penalty, on both ends really,” Sid said.
“You got hurt, didn’t you?” Ian asked seeing Jamie cradle her wrist.
“Yeah and what if I did, nothing is going to change. It’s just like last years worlds,” Jamie snapped.
“Jamie calm down,” Ian said, “We’ll get them in New York.”
“No we won’t, you guys aren’t seeing what is happening. The Rangers can do anything they want to us, but the minute we touch one of them we get a penalty or a goal gets reversed,” Jamie yelled causing everyone to stare at her, “This is why I never wanted to come to be honest and my wrist really hurts.”
“Jamie,” Steve whispered.
“Yeah?”
“Go get your wrist checked out, OK,” he said.
“OK.”

“You guys think she’s right?” Sid asked.
“Maybe.”
“I don’t know.”
“Sounds possible.”
“I know one thing for sure, Jamie does get the butt’s end of most calls,” Steve said.
“Got that part right,” Ian muttered.
“What do we do?” Geno asked.
“I’ll tell you what, we’re going to do what the Rangers did to us last year,” Sid said.
“Let’s go boys!”

Jamie entered the plane with a cast on her right wrist.
“Jay! What happened?” someone asked.
“I broke my wrist. What does it look like?” Jamie snapped.
“Jeez, I know you’re upset but no need to get all snappy.”
“I don’t want to talk anymore,” Jamie muttered.
“Why’d you make this trip?” Ian asked, sitting next to Jamie.
“I’m not going to abandon my team just because I got injured,” Jamie explained.
“But it would be better for you to not travel as much.”
“It would be better for me to not travel as much if I had a concussion which I don’t,” Jamie said, “Besides, I want to watch my boys make Lundqvist eat it.”
“Will do James, will do,” Ian said.

Jamie had to watch this game from the stands, and it was killing her. She had no idea how the guys did it when they were hurt. She loved playing the sport, but it killed her to watch it, especially her team. It didn’t help that the Pens were losing.

When the game went to overtime Jamie about had a heart attack. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust her team, she didn’t trust the refs. The first thing that flashed through her mind was what happened last game.

Jamie was heart broken when the Rangers scored in overtime to knock the Penguins out of the playoffs. She didn’t even stay to watch the handshakes, she made her way down to the locker rooms as fast as she could, but got stopped on the way.

By the time Jamie got down to the locker rooms the media was there and she didn’t want to go in and get questioned. What Jamie did here was Sidney talking, talking about her.
“You know, she got a couple calls against her to non calls, then she fell victim to the injury bug. You know, Jamie Jokinen proved one thing this season; hockey is a girl’s game.”

Hearing her captain say that put a smile on her face; “You know what?” Jamie muttered to herself, “We’re going to come back twice as strong next season.” She then entered the locker room.

Notes

So, this is Jamie's first season in the NHL. I'm thinking of doing a short sequel about what happens after, but I want some feed back. You know, just to see if yinz would read it. I might also do a prequel about Jamie's life before the NHL, but I want feed back! again. Let me know what yinz thought of this.
