The Hockey Boys & Me

Chapter 5

He was leaning down towards me. His eyes were flicking back and forth between my lips and my eyes. He was also fighting an internal battle, but I knew which was winning in his head.

However, there was a war waging in my body, and for the life of me, I couldn't decide if I should go for it, or not. Brayden seemed to notice my hesitation, and stopped moving. He backed off, and slightly turned his head away from me.

"I uh, sorry." I stammered.

"No! No! I mean, um..." Brayden trailed off, obviously unsure of how to attack this wave of awkward that just surrounded us. An awkward silence spread over us like a fog, a very thick pea soup like fog.

But then I went for it. When Brayden turned back to face me, I pressed my lips to his, catching him off guard. But when it finally clicked in his head, he responded.

"Allison, I've wanted to do that since I first saw you on the ice." Brayden whispered in my ear, while holding our foreheads together.

"I know you have. But I have too." I said softly.

"Your brother is going to kick my ass." He laughed heartily.

"He won't, I'll make sure he doesn't." I smiled at him, nearly beaming.

"I could go for some ice cream." Brayden said happily, taking one of my hands in his.

"I was just thinking the same thing."

--

"So how'd your date go with Little Schenn?" That was the question I slammed with when I walked through the door. My brother nearly jumped when I opened the door. He stood directly in front of me, arms crossed, and a deep frown covering his face.

"It wasn't a date, Gavin." I sighed and shook my head, walking past him, right to the kitchen.

"I saw him kiss you when he dropped you off." He stated angrily.

"Well, congrats, you have the ability of sight Gav!" I threw my hands up with my sarcastic answer. He was getting annoying, and rude.

"I don't like this Alli." He said tersely.

"And I didn't like you nearly dating my best friend, but you know what? I dealt with it because you were happy!" I let out a deep breath.

"Does he make you happy?" Gavin asked quietly.

"Yes!" I said in exasperation.

"Then I guess it's alright." Gavin nearly muttered.

"You know, Georgie texted me the other day. She's coming back soon." The subject was taboo with him. Georgie leaving really threw Gavin for a loop. He had been in love with best friend for years, and then when he finally grew the courage and the balls to tell her, she found out her father was dying.

Mr. Frankle lived in Texas, where Georgie was originally from. He was diagnosed with stage three brain cancer, and not too much time left. She left Philly on very short notice, and took the first plane out that she possibly could find. After being there for nine months, her father passed.

I remember her frantic phone call, and her hysteric voice. She was nearly screaming in the phone, and it was truly heartbreaking. She has stayed in Texas for the past few weeks, finalizing her father's funeral expenses, and contacting what little family she had left that seemed to be scattered across the country.

"It doesn't matter anymore." He replied gruffly.

"She wants exactly what you do, Gav, it was just a really bad timing." I tried for months to help him understand, but he refused to hear any of it.

"Just drop it please, Alli." He left the kitchen, probably heading for either the confines of his bedroom or the bonus room.

--

On Sunday, I opted not to go to the morning practice. Gavin came home that afternoon, and was still in a mood. He didn't eat with us as a family on Saturday night, and left for practice early that morning.

Right now, I stood in front of Gavin's bedroom door, debating on whether I should talk to him or not. When I got bored of arguing with myself, I let myself in.

Gavin laid on his bed, staring at his laptop with a goofy grin on his face.

"Oh, hey Alli!" He said cheerfully.

"What are you up to?" I asked skeptically, wondering how he could go from deeply depressed for the past twenty-four hours, to looking like a kid in a candy store.

"Talking to Georgie!" He nodded towards the laptop, where Georgie's face was currently spread across it.

"Oh, so you're feeling better?"

"Yes! Now go!" He shooed me out of the room, and made me insanely curious! But my thoughts were cut short, when the doorbell rang. I nearly skipped down the hall and leaped down the stairs.

Brayden stood behind the door, holding a single white rose, and seeming a bit nervous.

"Hey." He greeted me smoothly. "For you." He held out the flower to me eagerly.

"They're my favorite Bray. Thank you!"

"You're welcome." He leaned down to give me a quick kiss on the lips.

"Oh! Sorry kids!" Only my mom would walk in on that...

"Mom! Go bother Gavin! He's talking to his future wife!" I hollered to her retreating body.

"Will do!" She yelled back. My mother has been waiting for my brother to settle down since the day he graduated high school. When she found out about him and Georgie, she was ready to ask what the wedding colors would be!

Brayden gave me a confused look.

"It's a long story!"

--

"You staying for dinner?" I asked Brayden as we watched Avatar on the biggest tv in the house, in the bonus room. He had an arm around my shoulder, and I was leaning on his side. It was really comfortable! But Brayden was risking his balls, in case Gavin found us.

"Is that okay?" He asked warily.

"Yeah, just text your brother and Claude if your scared." I smirked a bit, seeing the hesitation on his face.

Brayden whipped out his phone quickly and texted someone, not sure who, but it didn't matter.

"I'm surprised they aren't here yet anyways! Sunday dinners are my mother's favorite, and the guys usually are here by now."

"We've been here!" Well, I spoke too soon... As we both heard Luke's voice yell from the top of the staircase.

"We just wanted to give you two love birds some privacy!" And Claude's here too. I sat up a bit straighter when I heard their loud steps coming down the stairs.

"I swear, if you knock up my sister-" I didn't let Gavin finish his sentence, because I threw several pillows at him, at once.

"Shut the hell up!" I nearly screamed at him.

"Gavin Fray!" Mom came to my rescue! "Are you bothering your sister!?" I love it when she gets on his case. "You really have no right to! You're a twenty-three year old professional hockey player, and you still live with your parents! We should start making you pay rent! And I should start charging all of you boys for meals!"

"NO!" Was shouted in unison by all of the boys, even Brayden. I was ready to fall down on the floor from laughing so hard.

"Thanks Mom." I thanked her happily for getting the boys out of my hair.

"You're welcome honey, but would you please come help me with dinner?" I hopped off the couch and ran upstairs to help mom out. I was starving, so the faster this food was ready, the happier I'll be!

"So, you and Brayden?" She asked casually, while stirring one of the pots on the stove, probably containing gravy. I shot her a look.

"Don't give me that look! I saw you and him practically taking each other's faces off earlier!" My face was flooding with red, and there was no way in stopping it.

"Yeah, I guess." I tried to answer nonchalantly.

"Alright, I won't ask anymore questions." She still giggled a bit at my own expense.

--

"Sunday dinners are my new favorite." Brayden said happily, while we watched TV upstairs in my bedroom.

"Good to know." I rested my head on his muscular chest, loving how comfortable it was.

"I think you should cook for me, next weekend."

"At your condo?" I asked.

"Doesn't matter."

"Deal." I agreed with him easily, already looking forward to it.

"My parents will be here in a week and a half." I was excited to see his parents and sisters again, but I am wondering how they will react to...us?

"I'm excited." I reached up to kiss him, eager for the feeling of his lips pressed against my own.

"Little Schenn! Time for you to go!" Gavin yelled into my bedroom. I let out a deep groan, showing how much Gavin really annoyed me. We stood up from my bed, standing in front of each other.

"Goodnight Alli." He said softly, flashing me his perfect smile.

"Goodnight Brayden." He wrapped his long arms around my waist, while mine looped around his neck. He leaned down to give me a light kiss, and squeezed me close to him.

"See you tomorrow, bright and early."

"Bye Brayden."

"Bye Alli."
