Wildest Dreams

Tyler, Jamie, and Jason were on the Dallas Stars’ plane on their way to Chicago for a game against the Blackhawks. Tyler and Jamie were sitting next to each other and Jason was behind them, sitting next to Jamie’s brother Jordie. Jason leaned forward to talk to Tyler between the seats.

Jason: Care to elaborate one what happen the other night at Jumping Jacks?
Jordie: What happened at Jumping Jacks?
Jason: Tyler went for a walk and was giddy like a schoolgirl when he came back. Jamie said something about him asking about a girl at the bar but Tyler won’t say.

Jason put air quotes around the word walk.

Jamie: Yeah Segs, what’s going on with that little crush of yours?
Jordie: Ooo, little Seggy has a crush!
Tyler: I do not have a fucking crush. I’ve texted her a few times and that’s it.
Jason: You met her two days ago and you’re already texting her a few times?
Jamie: You don’t text any girl. You have a crush.
Tyler: Shut the hell up.
Jordie: What does she look like?

Before Tyler could think, he quickly answered the question.

Tyler: She’s tall, real tall, and has brown hair that goes just past her shoulder and she’s got the deepest, biggest blue eyes I’ve seen and the most genuine smile that pierces the room like lighting on the ocean.

Tyler quickly realized what he had said and sunk down in his chair and looked out the window.

Jamie: You’re right, you don’t have a crush. You’re head over heals in love with her.

Another teammate heard what Jamie said and quickly turned around to hear the rest of the conversation that was being held behind him.

Antoine: Did I just hear that Seg’s in love with someone.

Antoine lifted off his seat to try to stand the best he could with his seatbelt still on.

Antoine: Did you guys hear that? Seguin is in love with a girl!

Antoine yelled for the plane to hear and they all made sarcastic gasps and comments towards Tyler about the information they had just heard. Tyler slowly turned his head towards the guys that surrounded him and shot daggers through his eyes at them.

Tyler: I fucking loathe all of you. Every last one of you dickheads.

For the rest of the plane ride Tyler remained silent and refused to talk to anyone around him. He decided that he would text Meredith to see how her day was.

Tyler: Thank God for technology.
Meredith: That was random…
Tyler: What can I say; I’m a random guy.
Meredith: I’ve noticed. That’s okay; I’m pretty random too.
Tyler: We can be random together then. What are you up to?
Meredith: I am just hanging out with Carlee and Lauren. You?
Tyler: Sitting on a plane avoiding the Benn’s, Daddy and the French Man.
Meredith: Okay, I’m just going to act like I know who you’re talking about here. Why are you avoiding them?
Tyler: Because they’re assholes. Did you not pay attention to the players when you went to the game last week?
Meredith: Yes and no. My cousin told me who a lot of y’all were but I don’t remember a daddy or French Man.
Tyler: Well then maybe you should come out to a game again. I can get you, Lauren and Carlee tickets.
Meredith: That’s really sweet of you, but with finals coming up and winter break I don’t think we’ll be able to make it.
Tyler: You can pick the date. We have a few home games before Christmas.
Meredith: I don’t think I’ll be able to make any of them. I’m really busy with school and work and the holidays. I’m sure you know how it is.
Tyler: Well then maybe after the holidays. We still have a lot of hockey left of the season.
Meredith: Maybe.
Tyler: What are your big holiday plans?

Meredith didn’t respond to Tyler’s last text so he fell asleep until they landed. When he woke up and checked his phone to see if Meredith had responded and she hadn’t. After getting off the plane the team headed straight to the United Center. Jamie and Tyler’s cubbies were next to each other in the locker room.

Jamie: Are you still pissed off about what happened on the plane? We were just joking with you. You won’t say anything about this girl and then you go on and give a Nicholas Sparks answer about what she looks like and refuse to talk again. Who is this girl?
Tyler: She’s just a girl who I met the other night who called me out on trying to hookup with her and is actually really cool.
Jamie: Are you saying you want a relationship with this girl and you didn’t hook up with her on that walk?

Tyler just stared at Jamie.

Jamie: There’s nothing wrong with that… What’s her name?
Tyler: It doesn’t matter; I don’t think she’s into me. I offered her tickets to a game with her friends and she turned me down. No one does that to me.
Jamie: What? Turn down tickets or you?
Tyler: Both.
Jamie: Maybe she’s heard about you and your reputation and doesn’t want to give you a chance.
Tyler: Boston may haunt me, but I don’t think that’s it. The first time she ever came to one of our games was last week and she had no idea who I was for a while.
Jamie: A while?
Tyler: She saw my tattoo, said my full name, said she felt like she knew it, I didn’t say anything, twenty minutes later a fan stopped me and she figured it out.
Jamie: Maybe she’s Googled you since then.
Tyler: God I hope not. She’s straightforward enough she would have said something by now.
Jamie: I thought it was girls who got too attached during the holidays?

Tyler rolled his eyes at Jamie and headed towards the door to hit the ice before the game.

It was a few days after Meredith had met Tyler and she was out to dinner with her cousin Nicole. They hadn’t seen each other in a while and were catching up on each other’s lives.

Nicole: How are you doing?
Meredith: It’s been hard, but I can’t control it so I just have to deal.
Nicole: I agree, we’ve known its coming for a while now.
Meredith: It’s just not fun to deal with, you know?
Nicole: Oh, I know. Its been taking a toll on me.
Meredith: He’s... he’s just my best friend and pretty soon he’s going to be gone and who am I supposed to call when I have exciting news? He’s always been there for me. I’ve just come to lean on him so much I just can’t handle losing him.
Nicole: It probably doesn’t make you feel better, but we all lose people we love.
Meredith: If you know that won’t make me feel better, why say it?
Nicole: Well—
Meredith: I don’t want to talk about this anymore or I’m going to start crying and you know how I feel about crying.
Nicole: When was the last time you even cried?
Meredith: Hm, I don’t know, a few years ago maybe.
Nicole: I don’t get why you have such an issue with crying, it’s a way to express your emotions.
Meredith: Nobody wants to see your emotions. The people that do, are trying to learn your weaknesses so they can manipulate you or hurt you. Crying is showing weakness. Nobody cares about your problems; they’re just being nosey.
Nicole: You’re allowed to have feelings you know.
Meredith: I have feelings…
Nicole: Are you sure about that?
Meredith: You’re a bitch. Why did I decide to have dinner with you?
Nicole: Because we’re family and you love me.
Meredith: You’re still a bitch.
Nicole: You’re heartless.
Meredith: I know.
Nicole: You’re also a bitch.
Meredith: I’m a heartless bitch, what else is new?
Nicole: You tell me. I haven’t seen you since we went to the Stars game.
Meredith: Shit! I can’t believe I didn’t start dinner off with this story!
Nicole: This sounds good, tell me!
Meredith: Actually, since I’m a heartless bitch with no emotions, I don’t think I want to.
Nicole: You have emotions, you just don’t show them. And I thought you liked being a heartless bitch?
Meredith: I do.
Nicole: Please just tell me this story.
Meredith: So the dynamic duo for the Stars, what are their names again?
Nicole: Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin.
Meredith: Jamie Benn. That’s the guy you’re in love with! Doesn’t he have a brother or something? Or is the brother who you’re in love with?
Nicole: Jamie is the captain, and beautiful, and socially awkward and the man I’m going to marry.
Meredith: You sound delusional.
Nicole: Does this have something to do with your story?
Meredith: I went out to Jumping Jacks in Dallas the other night with Lauren and Carlee and this guy hit on me and somehow convinced me to go on a walk since he couldn’t buy me a drink and—
Nicole: DID YOU MEET JAMIE BENN?!
Meredith: No… I wouldn’t have been able to recognize him even if I did.
Nicole: What does you going out to a restaurant have to do with the Dallas Stars?
Meredith: Would you just chill out and be patient?
Nicole: I’m just confused. Why did you go for a walk with this guy?
Meredith: I honestly don’t know. I haven’t been able to shake him since last Saturday.
Nicole: Like can’t stop thinking about him?
Meredith: No, like I can’t get him to leave me alone.
Nicole: Is he a creepy stalker? Why did you give him your number?
Meredith: No, he’s really hot and not a stalker. Like he is really fucking hot and I’m crazy for not being so into him and for trying to get him to leave me alone. Like I’m being a fucking idiot about it, I just can’t get into a relationship right now.
Nicole: Why not?
Meredith: I have way too much going on right now. Just with finals coming up, the holidays, people coming in town, going home for winter break, him, Tanner… it’s just not a good time for this guy too. I don’t want a relationship right now. It wouldn’t be fair to him because I just don’t have the time to dedicate to one.
Nicole: I don’t think all of that should stop you from possibly having a really good relationship? What if he’s the one you’re supposed to spend the rest of your life with?
Meredith: Trust me, he’s not. He was looking for a hookup and I wasn’t it.
Nicole: But if he’s still trying to talk to you then maybe he actually wants to know you.
Meredith: The worst thing about all of this is that I actually enjoy talking to him and I want it to go somewhere, I just wish this happened at a different time. My brain wins this time.
Nicole: Then don’t stop talking to him.
Meredith: But I have to.
Nicole: Why?
Meredith: Because.
Nicole: That’s not an answer.
Meredith: He asked me what my holiday plans are.
Nicole: So? That’s a very normal question.
Meredith: I know, but I just can’t get into that right now. Not after I just met him. I don’t even know what my holiday plans are because of everything that’s going on. It could all change at any given second.
Nicole: So then what did you say?
Meredith: Nothing, I didn’t respond.
Nicole: That’s rude!
Meredith: No, what’s rude is giving him this super long answer about how my life is falling to pieces because I’m losing my best friend and I don’t want to let anyone else in and how my holiday plans could change at any second so I really don’t have any and the ones I do have are not set in stone because I may not even want to celebrate the holidays. That’s rude. Not responding was the right thing to do.

Meredith answered Nicole in one giant breath and rambled her reasoning to why she didn’t respond to Tyler. She took a deep breath at the end of her mini monologue.

Meredith: Don’t say I don’t have emotions. At this point in time, I have too many.
Nicole: Okay, I get it. It will be okay. I just can’t believe you met someone at a bar. I didn’t think you were that kinda girl.
Meredith: I’m not. That’s what’s surprising and that’s why my brain wins this time.
Nicole: You’re going to do what you want to do, regardless of what I say, so I’m not going to try to tell you what to do.
Meredith: You’re right about that. I’ve got my mothers stubborn New York attitude in me.
Nicole: I won’t argue about that. I’ve got my dad’s stubborn New York attitude too.
Why did you ask me about the Stars? You never elaborated on that.
Meredith: The guy I met...

Nicole interrupted before Meredith could finish gathering the courage to tell her who she met.

Nicole: Yeah?
Meredith: The guy I met is Tyler Seguin. That’s why.
