Chapter Nine

"Wow, you look great," Sidney told Cyan. He rushed home to change, opting for tan board shorts, a red t-shirt and black sneakers.

"Thanks, you look good too," Cyan said blushing. She was still trying to wrap her mind around her current situation. The fact she was going to eat with one of the most elusive people in the world was mind-boggling. She made a mental note to thank Blair for everything the next time she sees her. "Come in," Cyan moves out of the way, allowing Sid to enter.

Sidney didn't know what to expect when he was coming over but with a quick scan of the loft, he could see how it fit Cy. The place is spacious with tons of art on the walls. Potted plants sit in numerous corners and some in the window sills. Pictures of family and friends sit on either side of the entertainment center. Huge seat cushions sit on the floor in the living room next to an "L" shaped couch. The only thing that didn't seem to fit the bohemian vibe was the huge Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates and Steelers flags hanging in the dining room.

"Wow," Sidney whispered.

"This is my place," Cyan said motioning to the space. " To be honest, I don't care what you think about it."

"No, no! I didn't mean to come off rude. It's cool in here— it's calming. It fits you," he clarifies while he moves to a bookshelf on the left side of the TV. A complete set of the Harry Potter series is there among many other series that he did not know existed. Many of the books are classics, poetry, and academic textbooks. There's a huge stack of fashion magazines at the bottom in order by month.

"Oh, thanks. Again," Cyan blushes. "Do you want to leave for food or what?"

"We can stay here. I'm not starving or anything but I could use a sandwich. If you don't mind."

"Okay and I can do sandwiches! I have all kinds of bread and deli meats.” Cyan moves to the kitchen and grabs baggies of deli meats then goes to the pantry and grabs bags of bread.

“I have whole wheat, white, a wheat and white mix and this one is made from potatoes,” she says holding up the bag. “I have turkey, chipped- chopped ham because Blair likes it, roast beef and roast turkey.” She skips to the fridge to grab mayo, lettuce, and cheese. Sidney decides that he enjoys watching her move; her body moves fluidly and gracefully around the kitchen. He told himself on the way here he would keep it friendly. He also told himself that he wouldn’t try to make a move on her for James’s future girl. But like he thought before; he wasn’t going to resist her if she was into him.

“Do you need any help?” Sidney asks sitting at the island.

“No I’m good,” Cyan smiles placing a plate and knife in front of him. “Shoot, I don’t have any tomatoes.”

“It’s fine, they make the sandwich soggy.” Sidney grabs the whole wheat bread, ham, and cheese. “So, tell me about yourself Cyan.”

“I’m not that interesting to be honest,” Cyan states while spreading mayo on the wheat and white bread.

“I highly doubt that,” Sidney argues before he takes a bite of his sandwich. He lets out a satisfied moan. It takes every ounce of Cyan’s being to not groan herself from the semi-explicit sound that escaped Sidney’s throat.

“Uh, I’ve lived in Pittsburgh most of my life. I went to Michigan State on academic scholarships and I competed in the Olympics the summer of sophomore year for kickboxing. I brought home gold.”

“Oh shit! That’s fucking awesome. So you can kick my ass?” Was Sidney turned on? Yes, he was.

“I can. Even better, I could kill you,” Cyan says with a smug smile before she bites down on her food. To get back at Sid, she lets out a moan of her own. Sidney feels heat move to his groin, causing him to take deep breaths and think of gross things to prevent a very embarrassing situation. He loves the way her mouth wraps around her food; a light flutter of her lashes in the pleasure of the taste drives his thoughts back to an inappropriate place. She doesn’t even have to touch him to kill him.

“Do you want a beer?” Cyan asks.

“Sure,” Sidney says gruffly as he tries to get his mind out of the gutter. Cyan grabs two Heinekens and opens them by hitting the caps off the edge of the counter. She hands one to Sid.

“Don’t drink too many of these, you’ll have a beer belly,” she jokes.

“Nah, I’m really not supposed to drink alcohol but one can’t hurt right?”

“I hope not! I’d hate to be the reason why you still can’t train.”

“Back to your story; so you got gold but are you ever going to go back?” Sidney asks. Cyan lets out a sad sigh. She would love to go back; the feeling of fighting and competing made her feel invincible. But with everything that happened since then, it just felt weird. She knows the only way to fully heal is to go back into the ring but she can’t bring herself to do it.

“No. I have other plans,” Cyan answers quietly. Sidney could tell he upset her. Whatever she wasn’t telling him was very personal and they weren’t at that level to talk about it. He chose not to probe any further.

“Well, that’s ok. Medicine is cool too! You said you wanted to work with kids?”

“Yes,” her face lights up. He remembered? “I love children. I might go into surgery but that requires more school.”

“I love kids too, I want a big family one day,” Sidney slips into a small daydream. Two boys and two girls would be perfect; all of them would enjoy hockey as a family and he would encourage them to do other things they enjoy. He just didn’t know who the mother would be. Not that he was looking. He’s still young and far too busy to settle down just yet.

“How many kids?” Cy asks taking their plates and knives, placing them into the sink. “ I want four, two boys and two girls would be ideal.”

“That’s what I want!” Sidney said incredulously. “That is so weird,” he chuckles.

“ I agree!”

“Not to be nosy but what’s with you and James?” Sidney thought it was better to just get it out now than end up disappointed later on. Cyan, on the other hand, was shocked that he even knew anything was happening. Those hockey boys gossip more than girls.

“Nothing, he just came over a few days ago to observe. He participated in a couple classes and did well. He may be lanky but he’s strong.” A dreamy look swept across Cyan’s face as she remembered her time with James. He was so funny and willing to learn. Sidney felt the green-eyed monster creep up in him.

“So you two aren’t a thing?” Cyan stopped putting things away and turned to face him. Her face slightly annoyed. One area of her life that was off-limits to everyone but Blair was her romantic life. Usually, because it was nonexistent.

“Sidney, I don’t discuss my relationship status with people who aren’t Blair. For your information I am single. I like James, I don’t know romantically or not. Well, I think romantically…” Her voice fades out. The dreamy look on her face reappears.

“I’m sorry for overstepping,” Sidney holds his arms up in defeat. “It’s not my place; I have no idea where that came from.” He knew exactly where it came from— he fucking likes her!

“It’s ok I guess. I overreacted. I just don’t like to talk about my personal life much okay?” Cyan explains when she goes to sit next to him at the counter. Her shoulders slump in the seat as she slowly turns to him. Her hazel eyes catch him off guard as he stares into them. They’re sad with a hint of defiance. He moves to her nose and down to her full lips that are covered in some shade of purple lipstick. He licks his lips slowly. Cyan watches Sidney as he analyzes her face. Her chest heaves in anticipation of what could happen.

“Sidney?” Her voice is a whisper. Sidney’s eyes slowly flick up to look at her; in the light there is a speck of gold in them, reminding her of the color citrine. Her breath is caught in her throat. She can admit she never felt like this around James but yet again, they were never in close proximity when they were together. Cyan hoped it wasn’t just her crush on Sidney that was making her feel this way.

“Yes,” Sidney answers. His body is still, trying to decide what he should do next. He knows that he should probably leave but he feels like she put him under a spell, one that doesn’t allow him to move away from her, but closer. He leans closer to her, their foreheads nearly touching. She smells like honey and lavender.

“You’re awfully close. Do you have an explanation?”

“Not really. Well, that’s a lie. I love your eyes and the shape of your mouth,” He admits. Cyan’s jaw goes slack in shock as he reaches a hand out and cups her face in his left hand. He runs his thumb along her bottom lip evoking a shiver from her.

“I can tell you that I am never this forward with a woman but I kind of like you.” Cyan gasps. This can’t be happening. How is this happening? What about James? I like him too and I know he likes me too and I don’t want to hurt him, Cyan panics internally. But she finds herself leaning into Sidney’s palm. He shifts to hold her face in both hands, his eyes examining her face.

“I think you’re beautiful, Cyan. I know you may like James and I know he likes you. As much as it pains me to say this; I won’t stand in his way. If you like me, that’s awesome but I want you to sort out your feelings for him first before you make a decision. I just want you to know that I like you and I promise not to make you feel uncomfortable when you’re helping me with yoga.”

“Sidney, I-I’m so confused,” Cyan admits. For whatever reason, she feels tears well up in her eyes, threatening to fall and ruin her make up.

“Please don’t cry, I won’t tell James anything ok? Just forget that this happened,” Sidney says. He doesn’t want her to forget but it’s the only way for them to move on.

“I don’t want to but I do like James a lot,” Cyan gently removes Sid’s hands from her face. She stands up and leads him to the front door. “It was nice having you over Sidney. Maybe we can start yoga next week?”

“I’d like that and thanks for having me over. I’m sorry for what just happened, it won’t happen again,” Sidney blushes as he steps out. “See you later,” he waves backing into the hallway.

“Bye Sid,” Cyan whispers from the doorway. Closing the door, she leans against it and slides down to the floor in disbelief of what just happened.
