The Cabin by the Lake

The one where you should ask for last names....

I woke up the next morning in an empty bed and only a sheet covering my bum. I looked around the room and found my clothes, folded, on a chair nearby. I didn’t realize how big his room was, the door that led to the bedroom was closed and I heard him talking to someone. I ran to the chair and put my clothes back on, why did I stay the night? I grabbed my phone, texts from Casey and Sarah. Are you okay? If you need to talk we are here. Hope you’ve got something to keep your mind off it all. I smiled and texted the girls back, Hey, everything is good. I did find something to get my mind off of everything…and he’s pretty hot. I waited a few minutes, feeling relaxed. It had been over 2 years since I last had sex or even enjoyed it. My phone buzzed, what?! Who?! What happened?! Sarah responded. I laughed, Went to a bar and met this guy, super cute and super nice. One thing led to another…and next think I know I’m awake in his bedroom.

I heard Ryan talking to someone again, but the second person’s voice intrigued me. I tip toed to the door, and opened it slightly. My eyes went wide and I closed to door, to not make any sound. I rushed to the chair again and grabbed my phone. “Ryan Boston Bruins” I typed into google…and there he was. Ryan Spooner of the Boston Bruins. He must have been in Providence for a while…that’s why I never met him. Damn it….I really should start to ask for last names! My heart started to race. I couldn’t leave, he was talking to Zac! I screwed a bruin. I texted the girls, and soon they were calling me. I answered with a whisper, “Guys, I messed up. Fuck!” I tried to keep my voice down. “What happened?” Casey asked in a sleepy tone. “The guy I slept with is in the other room, talking to someone right? Well I went to take a peak and he’s talking to Zac! So I googled Ryan Boston Bruins and there he is! A player for the Boston Bruins. Fuck!” The girls were silent for a little besides their gasping and frantic breaths. I could tell they were both up in their beds; Sarah mostly likely shaking Eric awake, “You really need to start asking for last names and job descriptions.” I tried not to laugh, but I couldn’t help it. Despite the pickle I was in, I felt so relaxed. I guess sex is a stress reliever. “Just don’t let Zac know, but then again…who cares? He has a girlfriend!” Casey said, “Yeah, you do you girl....or have this Ryan guy do you.” We all laughed and I heard the front door open and close, “I think he’s coming back, I got to go.” I said, “Call us later!” Sarah said right as I hung up.

I started to put my shoes on when Ryan walked in. He was in boxers and a t-shirt and he smiled at me. “You don’t want to stay for breakfast?” He sat on the bed and looked at me, “Uh, I really shouldn’t. I’ve got a lot of work to do…” As I stood up, he stood up too and walked over to me. He started to bite my neck, and I wanted to stay for breakfast. “I really should go.” I felt him smile on my skin, “But you don’t want to.” I kissed him lightly on the lips, “I don’t want to go…but I really have to.” He smiled at me, “I hope I get to see you around.” I gave a small smile, “I have a feeling you will…” He kissed me one last time, and I left his room. I made a straight shot to the elevators to avoid Zac, and made it to the room without seeing anyone. Even Janice wasn’t in the room. I got into the shower and thought about last night, how out of character is was for me, and how of course with my luck it’s someone I have to see almost every day. When I got out there was a knock on the door. I wrapped the towel tight around me and opened it. “Hey…”I said to Zac as he rushed by me to get in. I closed the door and he sat on my bed. He didn’t realize the bed was still perfectly made. “So, there’s another player coming to the charity tomorrow.” He said while looking at his hands. “His name is Ryan Spooner…” My heart fluttered from memories of last night to the nervousness running through my body. “Emily, I’m honestly nervous.” I sat next to him and rubbed his back, thinking unthinkable things, “Why?” He sighed, “Well for one, it’s really the first big thing I’m doing with a team member. I talked to him this morning and he seems nice.” I nodded, “but?” I was anxious, and completely unaware I was still in my towel. “He’s Stephanie’s ex…” I nodded, “oh…” He nodded, “I’m sorry…I shouldn’t be talking to you about this…” He stood up and I grabbed his arm, my body instantly wanted him. “No it’s fine. Really.” He sat back down, and I smelled his perfume. I had visions of ripping off his clothes. “They broke up a while ago…but it still feels weird.” I nodded, “He’s probably over her, you know? No bad feelings.” The way he was last night, he’s over her.

He nodded, “That’s what he told me this morning…he also mentioned he had a girl in his bed to prove he’s over her.” My heart stopped. I was that girl and he has no idea. “See, I’m sure you’re fine.” He nodded, “I’ll let you finish getting ready…do you have any plans for today?” Yup, to avoid you and Ryan all day. “Nothing solid, maybe walk around the town, go to my old college or something…” He nodded, “maybe the three of us can meet for lunch?” I could see his pleading eyes. He wanted me to make sure Ryan was over Stephanie, but by eyes pleaded too...they pleaded for dirty things to happen to me. My head screamed, say no, say no, and say no. “Sure!” I said, trying to seem happy, but really I was about to shit some bricks. “You’re the best Emily!” He hugged me hard, and I hugged him back, not wanting to let go...not wanting this to really be happening. But my body wanted Zac. He released me from the hug, and my towel fell. He looked at me like a deer in the headlights, picked up my towel, and kept looking. “I didn’t know you had a tattoo on your ribs.” I smiled and took the towel, wrapping it around me. “Yeah, for my grandma.” He nodded, and I saw it in his eyes. Lust.

Zac left, and I just stayed sitting on the bed. Why did I agree to lunch? I finished drying my hair and putting on makeup. I looked at the clothes I brought, what should I wear? I decide on my white Hollister shorts, brown ankle boots, black tank top. The summer days were warmer around here than Canada. I put in some dangly earrings when my phone buzzed, Hey Emily, meet in the lobby in 5? I smiled, I’ll be there Zac! I gave myself a once over, I don’t know if it’s the sex but I feel like I’m glowing…I grabbed my sun glasses and purse and made my way to the lobby. As the elevator brought me closer and closer, my heart started to race. What if Zac finds out? What if Ryan freaks out that we are going to be working with each other? I took a deep breath when I spotted Zac and Ryan, who had his back turned. Zac smiled towards me, and I melted. “Ryan, this is our photographer, Emily.” Ryan turned around and he smiled, “Hey.” I said in a small voice and Ryan laughed, “We actually met…informally.” He winked at me, and then Zac tuned to him putting me out of view, and I shook my head at Ryan mouthing “he can’t know”. Ryan smiled, “I saw her at a karaoke bar last night. She was rockin’ the place. We talked for a few minutes after but we didn’t talk about jobs or anything.” I laughed nervously, “And I’m new to this whole hockey thing, so I had no idea who he was.” Zac nodded, “You really need to brush up on your hockey players.” I felt relaxed…but still anxious. Zac was joking and didn’t catch the hint of fear I had in my voice of his finding out. Although, I’m not really sure what he would do. “You’re telling me.” I said with a small smile.

We went to an Applebee’s that was in walking distance. I walked in the middle of both guys, feeling confused and horny. My hand brushed against Zac and my heart would pound, but he wouldn’t acknowledge it. Ryan on the other hand embraced it. He would glanced over at me, and for a few seconds he held my hand. My heart wanted to pound uncontrollably, but I couldn’t get my mind off why Zac didn’t acknowledge our hands brushing against each other, even after the summer had...did he really have no feelings? Sit next to me? Zac asked in a text when we were waiting for our table. I gave him a slight nod. He wanted me to be close…but not so close that feelings developed? He wants me to be okay that he as a girlfriend, but toys with me, thinking maybe things haven’t changed…We got a booth and I did as Zac asked, I sat next to him and across from Ryan. It was uncomfortable at first, and I found myself glancing at Ryan over my menu. I stretched out my leg, and rubbed his. He smiled and gave a wink when Zac wasn’t looking. That’s when it happened. My heart started to pound.

Maybe it was the secrecy of it all, but I couldn’t help but embrace it. We ordered our food, and the guys talked about the team and hockey. Ryan kept glancing at me, and I would smile. It was interesting to hear the guys talking about their job and sport of choice, and I found myself asking questions. “Wait, what’s icing?” “What’s a hooking?” “How are penalties determined?” They answered my questions, they were kind and patient with me. We joked about how I had a job in hockey and yet knew nothing, and I had visions of these who men in only ice skates.... “Stephanie is one of the ice girls, and she has to know all the rules.” Zac mentioned her, I saw Ryan’s eyes flicker. But all he did was smile, “All the ice girls have to be knowledgeable, sometimes I think they know more than me!” He laughed and so did Zac, but I couldn’t tell if he was being defensive or not. “What’s an ice girl?” I asked in a small voice, feeling a little embarrassed. “They’re like our cheerleaders. They’re very involved with the fans.” I nodded, and Zac laughed, “I’m surprised you didn’t try and find out information on her.” I turned towards him, “Why would I do that?” Our food came and he shrugged as he ate a french fry, “When I told you I was with her, you ran off. I figured were…I don’t know…jealous or something.”

I looked at Ryan, feeling embarrassed for this conversation, but Ryan’s eyes screamed that he put the pieces together. He figured out why I didn’t want Zac to know. But my blood started to boil, and visions of sex left my head. “Hey Ryan, are you over Stephanie?” I looked at him, and my words were fast and a little harsh. He gave a confused look, “What?” I nodded, “Are you over her?” He nodded, still confused, “Yeah…” I nodded, “and how long have you been over her?” My words came out harsh, but I couldn’t control it. Zac nudged me, but I ignored him. “Um…well I broke up with her, so for a very long time.” I nodded again, “And you’re cool Zac’s dating her, right?” He laughed, “Yeah man, I told you this morning. She’s all yours. But I won’t ever give you my experience with her or tell you why we broke up. This is your relationship, you have to make your own choices.” I nodded, “There’s your answer Zac. My work here is done, asshole.” I got out of the booth, “Where are you going?” Ryan asked with a low voice, “I’m suddenly not hungry. I’m sorry Ryan, it’s been great to meet you. Tomorrow should be fun!” I grabbed my purse, threw a few bucks on the table, and walked out of the restaurant.

I would be finished. She needs to be too. Not to let someone in your life your girlfriend in on christmas but let your friends ex-girlfriend that you slept with in to celebrate christmas with you and your family. No thanks. He has to be still "seeing" her.
