A Missing Puzzle Piece
Chapter 18
Travis’s POV “Travis, TRAVIS!” Jaymes groaned. My eyes fluttered open. “What? What do you want?” “Someone’s at the door.” She slurred sleepily. “Can you get it?” I was about done with her, the most demanding sociopath I’d ever met. Maybe sociopath is a little harsh. “Sure.” I said, exasperated. She can’t do anything for herself. She was the one AWAKE! Why can’t she just get the damn door? I rolled out of bed and pulled a Devils shirt off the floor, putting it on. I crept down the stairs and tugged the door open. There was a small woman there, she was soaking wet and it was pouring rain. Her clothes clung to her small frame and she was shivering. Her hair was in a ponytail behind her head. Even with the storm I could tell her eyes were red from crying. She looked at the ground miserably. Her eyes met mine and she whispered, “Hey.” I didn’t recognize her at first, and I could see that upset her. And then it hit me. “Oh my God, Molli?” She smiled a little bit. “That’s me.” “Well come on in! Why are you here so early?” I shut the door behind us, and through the window I watched a car pull away. I got her some of Jaymes’s clothes and we sat down on the couch. She began her story. “Well I left, and it looks like it might have been for the worse. I’m so sorry Trav. Why didn’t I just listen to you?” She was staring into the now burning fire. “I’m so sorry.” I pulled her closer to me, and tears spilled down her cheeks. “Don’t think like that. Actually, it might have been good. We all had time to try new things and stuff.” I said, attempting to console her in any way I could. She tried to smile. She was trying hard. “I can’t believe I left you. I’m really sorry.” “Don’t be. Just tell me where you’ve been.” She sighed. “Alright. I started in Virginia, and met up with another woman named Leah. She housed me for quite a while. She said I had to go back to New Jersey. She was happy in Texas, but ran away. Just like me. I told her if I were to come back here, she would go back to Texas. So here I am. I had Leah drop me off at Zach’s and Zach,” A sob caught in her throat. “I’m sorry, I just thought that, I thought he would recognize me.” Molli’s eyes met mine. “You know?” I was honestly really surprised. “He didn’t know who you were?” I asked dumbly. She shook her head. “Nope. I wanted to go there, because he was my, well” I finished her thought in my head. I patted her hair. “You don’t like him anymore, do you?” She shook her head. “I don’t.” I was going to win Molli for myself! She drifted into sleep, and I thought about how I had pretty much just won. * * * * We woke up at Jaymes’s screech. “What is going on here?” I sat up. “Oh. Hi.” Molli looked at me, “You have a girlfriend?” I didn’t answer her question. “Jaymes, this is my- “ She shook her head. “I don’t give a crap. You’re a cheater and I’m OUT.” She slammed the door shut. “We didn’t even have anything for too long, so I don’t even need to get over you!” I barely heard what she said. I looked at Molli. “Not anymore. But I kind of have some… news.” She gave me a nervous smile. “You can tell me anything Travis.” I nodded. “Yeah I know. I’m being… traded. To California. San Jose Sharks.” Her jaw dropped. “Y- you’re leaving?” She choked out. I shrugged. “I’m not even sure. Lou avoided telling me the reason, but I think it might be that I haven’t made up with Zach and there’s always a tenseness in the air whenever we’re both there. I’m sorry. You think you can get back together with Zach?” As I had slept I had come to a conclusion. I didn’t love her anymore. Some how. In the last few years, I’d grown up. Gotten over it. She looked at the couch. “When are you leaving?” “Soon.” “I guess I could try. Can you drive me over? Do I look more like myself now?” I nodded. “Yeah, let’s go.” She didn’t say anything as we drove over. “Please come inside with me.” She said tensely. I nodded and pounded on Zach’s door. “Zach! Open this door it’s really important!” When he opened the door, he looked exhausted. “Travis I’m trying to,” His eyes landed on me and he was just speechless. He didn’t say anything for a long time. “Molli? When did you” I interrupted him. “Last night. I came here first.” Her voice cracked. He wrapped her in a huge hug, and she hugged him back. “I’m sorry Molli. I had no idea. It was like 2AM. I’m so sorry!” She nodded. “I know. I was being pretty obnoxious myself. I’m sorry.”
