Relationship status: In Love with my Career

7

I took another puck to the face today in practice. You think I would have learned the first time.

While I had of course looked, there was no way I was actually going to see nurse Andy at a game. Not because I couldn’t pick her out of a crowd, but because she most likely never went to a game.

Although, it is also possible that I probably couldn’t find her in a crowd while trying to play a game. She doesn’t quite stand out the way some other girls do, and she knows how to not be seen when she doesn’t want to be. She just sneaks up on me when I least expect it.

Despite having my face messed up in practice I still played that night and went out to the bar after with some of the guys. It was definitely just a guys night, no girls or anything, just celebrating after a win, so of course nurse Andy shows up out of nowhere and implants herself right in the middle of our group. As much as I really wanted to see her, maybe that was not the best time.

“You keep messing up that pretty face of yours, Virts,” she said and inspected my eye without asking or offering any kind of introduction, so I stepped in.

“Guys, this is nurse Andy.” I blushed under their stare and tried to ignore Hutts’ giggle.

“It’s just Andy actually,” she corrected and sat down.

“Do you want to go somewhere else? Or sit at a different table?” I asked her quietly, but she turned me down.

“No, I just wanted to see how that eye of yours was holding up. You sure keep the team doctor’s busy,” she added.

“I know, it’s like I need a full time nurse or something,” I tried to joke but Andy was already slipping away. I was going to let her go, and disappear like always, but I couldn’t this time. I snaked through the crowd after her and tried calling her name, but it was too loud. I finally caught her right outside the door. “Hey! Wait,” I said and reached out to grab her to get her attention but I stopped when she turned suddenly.

“I don’t know what I’m doing with you.” She said before I had a chance to say anything. I didn’t really have anything planned to say anyway. “Every time someone tries to get close to me I pull away and close in on myself. But with you I feel like I don’t have to. And that scares me because I don’t know what to do with that.”

I was quiet for a moment as I processed this. I hadn’t been expecting a confession or any kind of explanation. “I was just going to ask for your number,” I tried to smile, but what she told me was so unexpected and deep that I probably looked scared. She reached into her purse and scribbled her number on a scrap of paper and thrust it into my hand.

“If I don’t respond I’m either working or in class. And if we ever do anything it’s going to be at your place, not mine. I don’t need my roommates seeing me bring home a fuckboy like you.” She smiled teasingly at the last part, and I knew that was probably going to be her nickname for me. There was a pause, and neither of us knew what to say, so Andy did what Andy does best and slipped away.

“I guess I’ll see you around,” she said and started turning away.

“At least I have your number this time,” I said.

“And for fuck’s sake stop trying to stop the puck with your face! I don’t want to see you in my ER!” She called after me and smiled. I watched her disappear around the corner and waited a few more moments to make sure she wasn’t coming back. I pulled the scrap of paper out of my pocket and read the number before quickly entering it in my phone in case it disappeared.

I hope it’s her real number. Because I’ve already texted her like five times.

Notes

Sorry for the delay, I've had this chapter half written for a week and haven't had time to finish it. Like nurse Andy, I am also in school and work. But I just got a 100 on my midterm so I thought I could take a break and write!!!

I don't remember if I've already mentioned this but I have a new book, and it's now available in print!! (as well as Kindle) I'm very excited about it!
