Relationship status: In Love with my Career

Nurse Andy is much, much more than I thought. Every time I think I have her figured out, she unveils another layer. She’d told me she was a nursing student, and I was totally okay with it and at peace with that fact. I assumed we were about the same age, and she was maybe 20 or even 21. But it turns out she’s already been through nursing school, and is getting her master’s degree now. I don’t know how I missed it, but Andy is definitely not 20. More like, 27, if I had to guess.

I’m not mad, of course, I shouldn’t be bothered by something like this (and I’m not), but what I don’t get is how I missed it! I guess I never saw her in better lighting than a colorfully but dimly lit bar. In natural light and no make up she’s still smoking hot, but I can’t believe I missed that!

I think it must have been her eyes that threw me. Because however old she really is, she has pretty big eyes that make her look younger. I meant that as pretty, and big, not pretty big. They’re not too big, is what I’m trying to say. But her eyes make her look younger.

Now I am questioning every girl I thought was ‘about my age.’

We were getting coffee a few days ago after she finally responded to my texts. She apologized and said she wasn’t ignoring me, but midterms were coming up so she was super busy. She said she couldn’t believe she was almost halfway through getting her degree already.

“Coming back to school was harder than I thought it would be,” she took another sip of her coffee, and slowly it hit me. Coming back to school?

“What do you mean? Did you take some time off?” I asked and really looked at her face for the first time. Like, really looked at it. She was tired, and it was pretty obvious, but she clearly didn’t care.

“Yeah, I guess you could say I took some time off between my bachelor's and master’s degrees.” She looked away and I could tell she was closing up again, so changed the subject.

“That’s cool. You know, I don’t think I’ve seen you at a game yet, and this season isn’t getting any longer.”

“Yeah, I know. Sorry to hear you won’t be making it to the playoffs.” She smiled a sort of apologetic scrunched up half smile and looked back at me again.

I shrugged and tried not to look too disappointed, but I’d seen it coming. “We still have a few games left this season if you change your mind. If you let me know which game you want to go to I can maybe set aside a ticket for you.”

“Okay,” she thought for a moment. “This Saturday.”

“Okay! I’ll see what I can do!”

Now I need to find some tickets for this Saturday’s game. Or at least one. I can’t let her down now.
