Champion Mistake

Chapter Two

~Two Weeks Later~
It's only been two weeks since Sidney left and I'm finally able to pull myself together without him. He made good on his promise; Facetiming me at every possible moment along with good morning and goodnight texts. I chose not to send him any risky pictures yet and opted for dirty talk and texts to give him blue balls. He hates me for that.

School's going well, the students are sweet and are trying to learn in hopes to never return to school for the summer. I don't blame them — as much as I love teaching, summer is my time away from school where I travel and enjoy what's left of my youth. At the current moment, I'm sitting in my classroom with eight students — five boys and three girls. Two of them were my students during the school year. It is D.E.A.R time or drop everything and read time where they have to read for almost an hour. I'm reading at my computer, well not reading more like watching my future husband play in the preliminary round against the host nation. Sidney has already scored putting the team up 5-2. I had to contain my excitement as Sid put a nail in their coffin.

Ring!

The bell dismissing the students rings just as Team Canada wins the game 6-3 with an empty netter from Toffoli.

"Have a wonderful day kids!" I exclaim as I wave the children out of the classroom. I clean up the classroom; putting books and toys in their rightful place. Papers that need grading are tucked in a folder and placed in my tote bag. I leave my classroom, but not without one last sweep of the room. Finding it satisfactory, I close the door behind me and lock it before I go to the main office.

"I'm leaving," I tell the office ladies Joan and Liza. They're older women and complete sweethearts.

"Okay! Oh wait," Joan says getting out of her seat and to the back of the office to the mailroom. I remember when I was younger, teachers would choose one student to check their mail and I got that honor. I always thought that was cool. Joan scurries back with a large box.

"This came for you today," Joan says as she hands it to me. "It came rush delivery."

"I don't remember ordering anything for the classroom," I mutter as I turn it over to see the sender. My heart skips a beat and a huge, stupid grin spreads across my face when I see the name.

"It's from him isn't it?" Liza asks. She loved watching me and Sidney's relationship. She said it reminded her of her own before her husband passed away from cancer. Liza has seen the ups and downs of my relationship and along with Joan, has been a constant source of encouragement to fight for happiness.

"Maybe," I say shyly as I dig a nail in the tap, splitting the box open. I pull out a letter first.

Monkey,

I snort at my nickname. Ever since he found out that I did gymnastics when I was younger, he decided that's what my nickname should be. It stuck once I took up rock climbing.

I miss you terribly and I know that you want to be here even if you're going to root for the wrong team. So to help you make the proper crossover, enjoy my gift to you.

I love you so much. Keep making those youngsters smart!

~Squid

I fold the letter and place it in my bag. I have a feeling what the gift is. I pull out a lumpy pink blob and begin to tear away the wrapping.

"I'm gonna kill him," I grin when I pull out a Team Canada jersey. Not only the team's jersey, the black ones he told me about. He knows me too well. Of course it's his number. I turn it around and it's customized with "Mrs. Crosby" on the back.

“Thanks ladies,” I tell Joan and Liza when I pack the jersey back in its box. “I’ll see you tomorrow!”

“Tell the future hubby we say hi!”

"I can't believe you sent me the jersey." Sid calls me before I go to bed, which is awfully sweet of him since he should be in bed. I sit cross-legged on our bed, half a pint deep in chocolate chip ice cream and enjoying a classic movie. I put on the jersey after work and haven't taken it off since.

"But you are wearing it," Sidney whispers. "I bet it looks cute on you."

"Of course it does! I look cute in everything," I giggle. "Why are you whispering?"

"Weber is sleeping and I don't want to wake him. He already claims he has to suffer because of my sleep talking. Is it that bad?"

"No baby, only when you're having a rough night but it's manageable."

"Ok good... I guess." There's a pause; I listen to the sound of his breathing.

"Did you think about my offer yet?" I ask. I hold my breath in anticipation of the answer. A part of me hopes that he didn't.

"Not really. I probably won't take it; I love you too much."

"I know," I yawn. I look at the clock — it's almost midnight.

"You're yawning," Sidney says. His voice is heavy with sleep. I imagine him lying in his bed, his hair scruffy. I love to play with his hair as he falls asleep. He won't admit it but he loves when I do that. "Goodnight, monkey."

"Goodnight, squid."
