Unexpected Turn of Events

Rock Me

February 1, 2014

“Do you remember summer ‘09
Wanna go back there every night
Just can’t lie, it was the best time of my life.”
~Rock Me~
-One Direction

It was just a matter of time until I would start my new job at my dance studio, Rose-Evans Dance Company. But before that, I would still be babysitting Madelyn, who could not wait until I was her new dance teacher.

Like I said before, life was pretty awesome right now. I should’ve seen this coming though. It was a typical Saturday and I was sitting on my couch watching some cartoons when there was a knock at my door. I opened the door to find Rachael Vera smiling at me. Great. Life just had to ruin my happy moment.

“Ahhh Kendall! I’m so glad to see you! How have you been doing? I’ve missed you so much! What have you been doing lately? Still caught in your dance dream?” It was like paparazzi was bombarding me with questions.

I cut to the chase. “Rachael, what are you doing here?”

“Well is that any way to greet your best friend?”

“You made it very clear that I am not your best friend and start quote, I never want to see you stupid bitchy slut ass ever again, end quote.” I put my hands on my hips, showing my sass. “So I will help you with your parting wish.” I slammed the door on her but she was too fast. Her foot stopped the door and she opened the door again.

“Kendall, can’t we just talk? Look, I miss my best friend. I miss the late night talks and the nights out and I miss having someone I can trust. Yes, you stole my boyfriend from me and of course I was furious but I am willing to put that aside. I am begging for your friendship. Please.”

I was surprised. Rachael and I did not end our friendship nicely. It all started the summer before my fourth year at university. Just a few months ago, Rachael introduced me to a new transfer student named Ryan Gabriel. He sure was hot and smart, too. Over the next few months, Rachel and I became best friends with Ryan until one night, Ryan and I got a bit drunk and had sex. We had sex a few times after that when Ryan told me he had feelings for me and loved me. I didn’t know immediately but soon, I found out I loved him too. That summer was amazing. I found the love of my life, I had a best friend who was an amazing friend, and because I took AP in high school and didn’t need to take as many courses, I had more time to dance. That was before Rachael walked in on us having sex a week before school started and she totally flipped out. She was screaming at Ryan and throwing things at him as I sat there, horrified. She screamed at me too, calling me a whore, selfish for having Ryan for myself, a bad friend, and many more awful things. Ryan then picked me up and we got into his car and drove away. We only came back once to get our things and we transferred to another school together, away from Rachael. It was later when I found out that Ryan and Rachael used to date when Ryan broke up with her but Rachael wasn’t letting him go that easily. And here we are today. That crazy girl who used to be my best friend who turned into someone who wanted to kill me. Now she was actually back to the Rachael I used to know. I was impressed. She was the bigger person and stepped up.

“Rachael, I’m not going to trust you again that easily. After what you said to me, it’s going to take me a while but I am willing to start over again.”

“Thank you Kendall. Can I have a hug?” She asked unsure if she should hug me or not.

“Of course.”

I woke up the day after a night out with the boys with a pounding headache. I really need to stop doing this. Nah, YOLO. As much as I hate hangovers, nighttime is when the fun begins.
It has been I think 3 days since my first date with Kendall and it definitely did not go well. After our kiss two weeks ago, I asked her out on a date. So weird, right? I asked a girl out on a date? Anyways, after some persuading, she finally agreed. It started out fine. We had a good time, we talked about her family and dance and I talked about my family and hockey. As the night went on, she seemed to be more and more uncomfortable and made a bad excuse about having to feed her fish. I haven’t talked to her since then.

Tonight, there was another game like always and I decided to invite Kendall, as a friendly gesture and to ask her out again. I’m not going to lie. She was hot, beautiful, stunning. But this was different. I find many girls hot, beautiful, and stunning. But those girls are just one night stands. Kendall was something different but I didn’t want a relationship. It’s just…I can’t explain it. I sighed. What is this feeling? I don’t want to date her but she’s not just a one night stand. I texted Kendall.

Kaner: hey! just wondering, you doing anything tonight?

My phone buzzed almost immediately.

Kendall: nope, why?

Kaner: wanna come to the game tonight?

Kendall: sure! can i bring someone?

Kaner: go for it

Kendall: kk thanks see ya there

My phone buzzed and Patrick’s name came up on my phone.

Kaner: hey! just wondering, you doing anything tonight?

I texted him back.

“Who are you texting?” Rachael asked me, nudging my sides.

Kaner: wanna come to the game tonight?

“Ooh. A game? What game?” Rachael asked me again.

“It’s nothing. I don’t even want to go.”

“Why not? Ask whoever it is if you can bring a friend.”

“Nah. I’d rather stay home tonight.” Rachael grabbed my phone out of my hands and texted him.

“Well there go my plans of staying home tonight.” I said.

“You’ll thank me later.”

“Right, because you always make the right choices for nighttime events.” I said, sarcastically.

“So do you want to tell me where exactly we are going tonight?”

“We’re seeing a hockey game.”

“Ooh and was the person texting you a hockey player? Preferably one that is hot?”

“Yeah, I guess. It’s Patrick Kane.”

“Whoa. Like the Patrick Kane? Like the right winger for the Chicago Blackhawks?”

“Yup. That’s the one.”

“Are you guys going out?”

Did she really have to ask that? She knows what happened between Ryan and I. She should know better than to talk about dating and guys. And to be honest, I had absolutely no idea what’s going on between us. “Not really. We went out once a few nights ago but I haven’t talked to him until today.”

“How do you even know him anyways?” She asked, curious.

“Well a few weeks ago, I was looking for a job and the only job I qualified for was a babysitting one. On the first day, I found out that the parents of the kid, Madelyn, was Patrick and Abby Sharp. They invited me to games and I know pretty much all the players.”

“Oh, wow. That’s amazing. So you still babysit their daughter?”

“Yup but not for long. In May, I’ll be the owner of a dance studio!”

“Really? That’s amazing! I’m so happy for you! You can finally live your dream!”
"I’m happy too, but enough about me, what’ve you been doing?”

“Well after university, I was offered a job at a local news station and I’m mostly covering sports though I may be moving to a new department. I’ve been working there ever since. Sorry my story isn’t as exciting as yours.”

I laughed. “That’s great!” We talked for hours, catching up on the last 5 years of our lives when it was almost time to leave for the game. We both got dressed and I let Rachael lend one of my jerseys. Once we were ready, we headed off.

Kendall: hey friend, good luck tonight! 

Seabs: thank you friend! are you coming tonight?

Kendall: of course, friend. see ya there!

The boys played well but sadly, it wasn’t enough to beat Detroit. As Rachael and I stepped into the change room, it was silent. Everyone was changing silently with the occasional good job from someone. We felt awkward to be there. No one acknowledged us and I even thought about just leaving them to be sad but decided not to.

“Hey guys!” I said, trying to cheer them up.

Not everyone said hi but some did before getting ready to leave.

“Who’s your friend?” Tazer asked.

“Oh guys, this is my friend, Rachael Vera. Rachael, these are the Chicago Blackhawks.” This time, everyone said hi. Rachael made her way around the room, stopping at each player and talking to them for a few seconds before moving on to the next.

“Hey.” A voice from behind me said. I turned around.

“Hey Kaner.” I said.

“Are you okay? You never texted or called since our date.”

“Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Just busy with dance and stuff.”

“Right. So does that mean there will be a second date?”

“Uh..yeah sure, why not.” This was strange. Patrick was not one to ask a girl out on a second date. He was a one and done sort of guy. Where is he going with this?

“Great. I’ll text you later.”

“Sure, bye.”

Rachael and I left after that, leaving the boys to recover from their loss.

“So what do you think of the boys?”

“Oh they’re so nice! It was so exciting. Thanks for bringing me.”

“More like inviting yourself.” We both laughed.

It felt just like the summer of ’09 again.
