The Price of Two

Chapter 1

Wyatt had already spent twenty minutes waiting in line to place her coffee order, when the line was down to one person in front of her, of course he had to place an order for 8 different drinks. She lightly sighed, shifted her bag to the other shoulder and looked down at her watch, she had to be back to her place in 15 minutes for her breakfast skype date, sensing she might not make it back in time she pulled her phone out and typed a quick message asking to push it back by 15 minutes. She wouldn’t have time to shower or maybe even change but that was fine. When it was finally her turn to order she got her coffee and a breakfast sandwich, when she went to pay the barista told her the gentleman in front of her had paid for her and handed her a note scribbled on the back of a receipt
You seemed like you were in a rush and had already waited in the long line, my large order didn’t help. Please let me pay for you order and try to make it up to you.
If you aren’t doing anything tonight, there will be two tickets waiting for you at the will call of the AAC, tell them the numbers 6165
It was a very sweet and odd gesture. She didn’t think too much of it right now however, she was too focused on getting home. She hustled out of the small café and over to her car, she drove through central Dallas, which wasn’t very busy considering it was about 9am on a Saturday morning, when she pulled into the garage of her townhome she grabbed just her coffee and breakfast, telling herself she’d get the rest of the stuff later. When she got in she had 5 minutes to spare, she ran upstairs quickly to change out of her scrubs pulling on more comfortable clothes. She grabbed her laptop, ran back downstairs and set up on the island, she logged on and waited for the much anticipated call. It didn’t take long before the ring started signaling an incoming call, Wyatt pushed accept immediately.
“MOMMA!!!!!!!” a small boy popped up on the screen waving excitedly.
“Hi buddy!” Wyatt immediately perked up when she saw her son. She noticed they were at Carsen’s house, meaning they were spending one on one time, she also noticed they both had plates in front of them with pancakes “How were you for daddy while mommy was working?” They usually skyped every night but she had picked up a long 36 hour shift at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas where she worked as a nurse practitioner in the NICU. She loved her job and often took long shifts once a week when her son was gone so she could afford more time off when he was here if he was ever sick or they just needed a special day together.
“I was weally good mommy” Hearing this she smiled but then looked up at her ex and her son’s dad, Carsen, for confirmation.
“He was good, we played around the house yesterday and tried working on catch, I think he’s gonna be a pitcher. He had a little trouble sleeping last night, got up around 2 and tried to climb into bed with me, I took him back to his room though, we read a book and got back to bed.”
“Aw bub, we gotta work on sleeping through the night. What are you guys up to today?”
“ZOOOO!!!!” the boy replied animatedly while his mouth was full with pancakes.
“You’re going to the zoo?! I’m jealous, mommy wishes she could be there.”
“Tell mom we’re going with Aunt Katelyn and then going to have dinner at Nana and Papa’s”
Carsen was a great guy and a better father. He was a baseball player and he met Wyatt while he was in college playing in a summer league and she was finishing nursing school. Carsen’s team, in Canada, played a team in Wyatt’s hometown and they met after a game very early in the season. Both thought it was just going to be a one night stand but took them by surprise and they saw each other the whole summer. Things between them quickly changed once the summer was over and Carsen returned home to Louisiana, they stopped talking and he got back together with the girlfriend he had left for Wyatt. After about two months Wyatt realized she was pregnant and moved down to Baton Rouge, 45 minutes from Carsen. He ended things with Morgan and convinced Wyatt to try and make things work.
Just after their son was born Carsen got drafted by the Cubs and they moved up to Des Moines, Iowa, just 2 hours from Wyatt’s hometown, to play for the farm team. They lived there for a year, Wyatt staying home taking care of the baby while Carsen worked his ass off to get brought up through the ranks. It payed off, the next season they were in Chicago, and in Louisiana during the off season, but things changed. Carsen became distant and they started fighting, Wyatt wanted to know if they were going to ever be more and with Carsen being gone so much things just weren’t working. They realized they were amazing friends and co-parents but they weren’t the best lovers.
They continued talking for another half hour before they logged off so the boys could get ready. Wyatt cleaned up and then remembered what happened at the café, she went back down to her car to grab her bag and a few other things she left. She was searching for her chapstick when she found the receipt from the café, she re-read the note and thought for a bit before deciding to call her best friend, Sophia, after a few rings she picked up
“It’s too early.” Wyatt heard her say in her morning voice.
“Good morning to you too. Do you happen to have plans tonight?”
“Uhhh not that I know of…”
“Perfect!” Wyatt smiled to herself, “You’re going to a Stars game with me”
“How and when did you get tickets for that?” Sophia asked confused as to why she was just now hearing about it.
“I’ll tell you about it tonight, the game is at 7, you want to come over around 4 and we can go grab some food before we go?”
“Sure, I’ll see you then”
“Okay! Go back to sleep you lazy.” Wyatt said as she hung up. Now not having to worry about anything she headed upstairs to take a shower and sleep for a bit before getting ready for the game.

Waking up at 3:30 Wyatt quickly got to work on getting ready, since she had already taken a shower she didn’t have to worry about that and decided to throw some loose curls into her hair and go subtle on the makeup, a little bit more than she’d normally wear to work but not so much that she felt like she wouldn’t be able to touch her face all night. She was in a tank and some lounge pants when she heard her front door open.
“Hey boo!” Sophia yelled out as she shut the door.
“What’re you wearing?” Wyatt yelled back. She had gone to plenty of hockey games back home, as her baby brother was a hockey player, but she wasn’t quite sure considering she didn’t know if she’d meet mystery coffee guy there or what was going to happen. She was standing in her closet when Sophia came up looking flawless of course, but not quite hockey game ready. “Well you look like you’re ready for a night out” Wyatt eyed her outfit up and down a few times.
“I figured we end up going to Tate’s after for a few drinks.” She said like it was obvious
“Oh I don’t know, I had a 36 hour shift…” Sure she had slept 6 hours today but she didn’t know if she could do a night out.
“Come on you never go out anymore” Sophia wined. Wyatt turned with her arms crossed and looked at her friend, in return Sophia pulled out the puppy dog face.
“Hey I’m a mom. That’s not gonna work on me.”
“Pwease” She even stuck her bottom lip out.
“Oh fine. But just so you know, Cash looks cuter doing it and I don’t give in to him.” Wyatt said turning back around, walking further into her closet. Sophia was right, she didn’t go out a lot as she could tell because all of her nicer clothes were in the back.
“So you gonna tell me how all this happened? I mean this is sudden and you don’t do sudden.”
“Well I stopped on my way home for a coffee and breakfast sandwich before my skype date with Cash and Carsen and the line was ridiculously long, of course when this guy in front of me gets up to the counter he orders 8 drinks. Turns out he paid for my drink and food, and wrote me a note on the back of the receipt saying there’d be two tickets at will call of the AAC for tonight.” Wyatt explained as she was digging around.
“Wow okay so basically this is something out of a movie.”
“Uh yeah sure, I guess… I mean I just figured it’d be a fun night for us” Once she found what she was looking for she stripped down and changed. “Ya ready?”
“Well hey hot momma. Yeah let’s get going!” Sophia jumped off the bed and the two headed out.

Notes

Just trying this out, let me know what you guys think! Chapter too long? Too short? I know Tyler hasn't truly made an appearance but he will in the next chapter. Any sort of feed back would be great!
