Look up and get lost in the Stars

3.

The sky is filled with stars, invisible by day - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I packed up my bag with my books and calendar at the end of the day once all of the kids had left the room for the day. I checked my phone quickly in case I missed anything but I didn't have any new messages. I sighed a little and slipped the phone back into my purse before leaving my classroom.

It had been a week and a half since Jamie and I had gone out for dinner. We hadn't seen each other since then, but we had been talking every day, and I made sure to watch his games if I was able to. The Stars had just finished a string of home games but they were on their way for some of their away games. I was sad because I knew for sure that I wouldn't see him for at least another week. But that was his job, and Lord knows we weren't dating. Not even close. So I didn't have a reason to be bummed out about it.

I walked out into the parking lot and unlocked my Mazda 3.

"Boo!" he shouted.

I yelled and jumped backwards, as Jamie came from around the back of my car laughing.

I laughed and shook my head, "You jerk," I said, hitting his shoulder gently.

"That was way too easy," he told me, as he leaned against the backdoor.

I grinned, "I told you I was easily scared."

"Exactly," he said with a wink.

I rolled my eyes and smiled at him anyways, "I thought you'd be on your way to Chicago by now."

His face reddened a little and he looked away from me, "Yeah, I should be, but I had the flight delayed for another hour. Said I had to see a doctor quickly."

"Are you okay?" I asked, concerned.

He laughed and nodded before looking back up at me, "Oh yeah, I'm fine," he grinned, "I huh...I wanted to say bye to you. I felt bad because we haven't been able to hang out since last week and I wouldn't see you for another week. I didn't want you to think I had...forgotten you or something."

My heart was racing. Was this guy for real? He delayed his fucking flight to say bye to me.

I shook my head while my face went red this time, "Fuck, Jamie...you didn't need to do that. You could have texted me, I woulda been okay with that."

"Hey, I wouldn't have been okay with it," he said with a smile, causing me to smile back up at him, "so if anyone ever asks, I needed to get a bad headache checked out. Make sure it's not a concussion or something."

I laughed and nodded, "Okay, I'll stick with that story."

He laughed with me, "I do need to head to the airport though," he said, almost...sadly? Maybe. I don't know.

I nodded once, "Okay, well, I know you don't like me to say the GL thing, but, have fun and stay safe. And kick some ass too, obviously."

"I'll try," he said with his goofy smile.

"I wouldn't say no if you scored a goal or something on my behalf," I said coolly.

Jamie laughed and nodded, "I will try and score something for you."

I smiled up at him, "Go and catch your flight hockey star," I told him softly.

"I have a couple days off when I come back, could we hang out?" he asked me.

"Of course," I said with a smile, "just let me know."

"I'll text you when we land, okay," he said.

I nodded, "Have a safe trip," I told him.

He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me tightly to him; I wrapped my arms around his waist and held him tight.

He sighed and squeezed my shoulders, "Don't go and start dating someone before I get back."

My eyes popped open against his chest and I felt my stomach knot. What did that mean?

I pulled away from him and smiled, "Talk to you soon, Jamie."

He smiled, "I'll be back before you know it," he said taking a step away from me.

I smiled as he turned to go to his Range Rover; I opened the back door and tossed in my bags, waving to him as he drove by me.

----

I was watching their game the next night as they took on the Blackhawks. It was tied 1-1 and they were just starting OT. I was sitting in Zoe and Kyle's living room watching, gripping my beer bottle tightly in my hand.

"Calm down, Josie," Kyle said from his chair.

I cringed as Antti deflected a shot from Kane's stick, "This is serious," I groaned, "Come on, just get it out of the zone!" I shouted at the T.V.

"Hey, her boyfriend's playing, this is important," Zoe said teasingly.

I shot her a look, "He's not my boyfriend," I snapped.

Zoe and Kyle laughed, "But he likes you," Zoe sang to me.

I rolled my eyes and didn't reply. This had been going on since that first night at karaoke. Zoe had gone into my classroom and written my name as Josie Benn on the blackboard but I got it before the students came in.

"Here it is," I said sitting up, as Seguin passed the puck to Jamie, Jamie dodged around Hjalmarsson and shot the puck. The puck whizzed past Crawford to the back of the net, ending it in OT!

I cheered and jumped up watching the screen as the camera focused on Jamie. He found a camera and looked at it, he smiled brightly at it and tapped his stick to his temple and then pointed it at the camera, just as his teammates came to celebrate with him.

"Aww, JoJo, that was for you," Zoe cooed as they replayed Jamie's goal.

I smiled and sat back down, "Shut up," I said quietly, before bringing my bottle up to my lips.

But...what if it was?
