What Makes You Beautiful

"Laci! We are going to be late." Carrie called banging on her best friend's door. Laci mumbled and rolled over, pulling the heavy blankets over her head. "Laci. Laci Anne Fox. Get up now." she called again, pulling the blankets off of her.

"Five more minutes..." Laci mumbled curling up into a ball

"No. We're gunna be late..." Carrie repeated

Laci sat up and looked over at her best friend. Smiling at her before tossing a pillow at her head "I'm up." she laughed

"Good. Now get dressed." Carrie laughed throwing her bag over her shoulder "I'm going to go take our bags to the car. You have ten minutes, then I'm leaving without your ass."

"The tickets are in my name, Carrie. You won't be able to leave without me." Laci smiled

"True. So you better hurry." Carrie laughed taking off to the car

Laci headed into the bathroom rubbing her eyes and quickly washing her face. She brushed her long brown hair and threw it into a ponytail. She threw on a pair of white shorts with her Guns n Roses t-shirt. She did some quick make-up and grabbed her phone, throwing her makeup bag into her purse and locking the door just as Carrie honked the car horn. "I'm coming." Laci laughed

"We have to go get Tiana." Carrie explained. Carrie was beautiful. The blonde and gorgeous type. She had wavy blonde hair with piercing blue eyes and light freckles on her faux tanned cheeks. She had a perfect smile and alway dressed in the most popular clothes.

Laci was more of the "plain jane" type. She had long brown hair with hazel eyes. She never cared about fashion and had always looked to Carrie or Tiana for advice. As the girls pulled up to the house, Tiana came out with her purse on her wrist, toting her bag behind her. Tiana was also exceptionally beautiful, with her dark brown curls and her chestnut eyes. "Took you two long enough." Tiana laughed

"Sorry. Sleeping beauty back here wouldn't get up." Carrie explained

Laci snorted "I'm not beautiful. Sleeping, yes. Beauty, no."

"Stop that. You are gorgeous." Tiana said, throwing her bag in the back and taking her seat.

Laci shrugged and looked out the window. Carrie and Tiana had always said that to her. Called her beautiful, gorgeous, pretty...but Laci never felt that way. She felt plain. In high school, guys would always hit on Carrie or Tiana, but she barely even had a guy say two words to her. Other than the AP guys when they needed help with a project.

Carrie was head cheerleader. She was always considered to be one of the most popular girls in school, but Carrie never acted like it. She was always kind to everyone and even volunteered at various programs after school. Tiana was also very popular. She was one of the best dancers in the whole county, with her long and strong legs, she outdid everyone else. Tiana had led the school to four national victories and was the first African-American from the district to do so.

Laci was just that. Laci. In her mind, she felt like she just faded into the background and no one noticed her. She hadn't done anything major in the school, like be head cheerleader or lead the dance team to four victories. She was just there. This same pattern followed the girls into college. Carrie had gotten a scholarship to the University to cheerlead for the football team, Tiana had made the University's dance squad and Laci was just there.

Sure she was booksmart and computer savvy, but she wasn't spectacular. "Hello?" Tiana said waving her hand in front of Laci's face.

"Mmm?"

"Carrie asked if you need to stop anywhere."

"Oh. No. I'm fine." Laci replied

"Good. Then we are on our way to DC!"
