The Roommate

Two

The excitement I had from last night soon turned into nerves when I started getting ready for our meeting. I carefully selected my outfit just like I said I would, and took a few snaps of my house. I’m not really sure which room they would like to stay in, so I’ll leave that decision up to Bri if he wants it. Maybe he has his own furniture?

When I got to the coffee shop I collected my emotions and stepped out of my Range Rover. As I anxiously walked down the street to the front door I got an email from Bri. “I’m here and wearing the bright colours.” Bright colours? What?

I looked up and saw who I was looking for. A beautiful girl sitting at the window in a colourful dress. I looked around to see if there was anyone else in here, but I was wrong. Guess she’s the one I’m looking for. She looked up at me and smirked.

She got on her feet and asked, “Are you the SC I’m looking for?”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at her bubbly first impression. “That’s me. I’m Sidney, nice to meet you.” I extended my hand, and she took it almost instantly, returning my shake.

“Bri. Nice to meet you as well. Did you want a coffee?”

“Shouldn’t I be offering you a coffee?” I asked confused.

“I offered to meet up, and you agreed to, so I owe you the favor.”

“I couldn’t let you,” I shook my head.

“Well that’s too bad because I already got you one,” she grinned motioning to the mugs on the table she picked. “I didn’t know how you liked it, so I got everything on the side. Hope that’s okay.”

“That’s perfect. You’re always one step ahead aren’t you?” I laughed taking a seat.

“I try to be,” she giggled, following my motions almost to a tee.

We both made our coffee, adding milk and a little bit of a sugar. She passed on the cream, unlike myself, and took at extra scoop of sugar. She just giggled when I made a reference to how much she actually took. It must add to her sweet personality in some way.

“So you’re interested in renting a room in my place?” I asked, receiving a nod from her. “Why is that?”

“Well actually, the line of work I’m in has a demanding schedule that can change on the drop of a dime. So I’m not usually home very often, especially if I’m travelling. And at this stage in my career I can’t really afford to have my own place because it’s just not worth it to me to waste my money on something I’ll never really be in. Plus, I’m only here on contract so I won’t be in town for very long.”

“What kind of work do you do?”

“Believe it or not I’m a freelance blogger. Basically I work with companies who would like to do partnerships to help gain exposure, so I go to their events, locations, take pictures for their website and other social media, and then on my own personal blog I may make a post on it. I don’t usually do it, but it’s a side deal.”

“So why are you in Pittsburgh?”

“I’m on a nine month contract spanning from now until May working for an agency who does the same thing I do, just on a larger scale. It’s basically like marketing. So I usually work on my own blog in my spare time and make extra pocket cash.”

“Oh that’s cool. So you travel a lot?”

“With this agency I won’t be travelling too far that often, it’ll just be a lot of long days and late nights. I know I have a few weekends where I’ll be out of town, but that’s like once a month.”

“So what kind of space are you looking for exactly?”

“Honestly I’m good with just a bedroom, any other space is an added bonus.”

“I’m sorry to be grilling you with these questions, I’m just trying to get to know what you’re looking for compared to what I am,” I said with an awkward giggle. “I really don’t mean for it to sound like a job interview.”

“That’s totally alright! You need to be sure with your decision, especially because of who you are. I’m sure you could get quite a bit of odd people trying to get the position.”

“So you know eh?”

“Oh I do. But that doesn’t change my opinion of you. I know what it’s like living with a professional athlete.”

“Oh really?” I chuckled. “What sport?”

“I’ll keep that one a secret for now. We’re here to discuss something entirely different. What did you have in mind for me if I’m the selected person?”

“Basically I don’t have many conditions. You have free range to the entire house. I won’t be home all the time, so basically it’s to help keep the house lived in. You can pick whatever bedroom you’d like, I do have a few of them, so it’s really up to you. If you have your own furniture you can bring it in. Uh, if you want to decorate it the way you’d like you can.”

“I don’t have that many things here yet. I’ve been in a hotel for the last week, so there hasn’t been much.”

“You’re in a hotel? How long have you been here for?”

“About a week. The company is paying for it until I get something or by the end of the month.”

“And you don’t live locally?”

“Nope! I’m actually from a whole other country.”

“I could tell you weren’t from around here,” I smiled, knowing exactly where she was from based on her little accent. “Do you have a vehicle at least?”

“That I do have. I drove here from home. I don’t really need a spot in the garage or anything, just space on a driveway so I don’t get a ticket for parking on the road.”

“I only have one car so you’ll have plenty of space. Do you wanna look at any of the pictures from the bedrooms? I’m not a good photographer,” I laughed showing her the pictures I took on my camera.

“No, no! You’re not bad at all!” she laughed, wiping a piece of falling hair away from her face. “You do have a beautiful home by the looks of it.”

“Thank you. I haven’t really been in it for a while, so it’s still getting back to the lived in state,” I chuckled.

While she looked at the pictures I couldn’t help but stare at her and think about the decision I have to make. She seems like a really sweet girl, who understands what it’s like to be on the go all the time. She seems pretty genuine and I don’t have any doubt in my mind that she wouldn’t make a great addition to the house. I think I know what I should do.

“So do you think it would work for you?” I asked.
“Of course. I think we’re on the same page as each other, and it doesn’t seem to be awkward between us.”

“When would you like to move in?”

Her jaw dropped and she got a huge smile on her face. “Whenever you’d let me! Thank you so much for this opportunity!”

“You earned it. You’re welcome to move in at any time you’d like.”

“Does two days work for you? I have to organize my crap and get a few things first,” she blushed.

“Of course. Here’s my number, just text me when you’re ready. I’ll be available to help out.”

“I’ll be sure to text you soon. I really do appreciate it.”

“Anytime. I look forward to seeing you soon,” I stood up and shook her hand.

I just got myself one amazing roommate.
