The Roommate

Twenty Three

The new year brought new adventure for Bri and Sid. She enjoyed her time home with her family and he enjoyed having his family for a visit and a successful winning streak. Today he finds himself playing another away game and she finds herself at work.

Mia wasn’t in the office today and Bri felt uneasy about being there by herself, which isn’t a normal feeling for her. She was fixing the recording mechanism on her phone, preparing to record a voiceover when Diana walked over by her desk demanding, “My office, now.” She dropped everything, shoved her phone in her pocket and followed hot on Diana’s heels.

Bri instantly knew it wasn’t going to be a good conversation.

The moment the door closed Diana began her rant, “You have access to one of the world’s largest athletes and you’re not making any moves on this opportunity. Do you know what kind of hits we could be getting with your juicy gossip? I’m shocked that someone with your eagerness and professionalism you wouldn’t stay true to being a blogger-”

“Not to be rude Diana,” she interfered politely, yet confidently and scared shitless deep down. “But I’m a lifestyle blogger, not a gossip junkie who's interested in leaking juicy gossip. I don’t even find the life of a hockey player that juicy to be honest. They live tough lives and-”

“You and I had a deal and you know it. I expect a lot more from you. I want a story on Sidney Crosby that no sports channel or journalist can find. I want drama.”

“I’m sorry Diana, but I can’t do that for you.”

“And why not?”

“Because there isn’t anything to tell.”

“Brianna,” she sighed, walking over to where Bri stood firm on her heals with her arms crossed over her chest. She bent over in a condescending manner, pointing her finger in Bri’s face and said, “You are going to get me that story or your done.”

“Consider me done then. I refuse to be unethical and betray-”

“Fine. Pack your things and be out by 5. It was a pleasure until this moment,” she smiled sweetly.

Bri did her best to hold back tears while she took one good look at Diana and her office, walking out for the last time. She did the same as she texted Mia to tell her and packed her things into a tiny box. The others in the office said nothing until she was almost done completely.

The moment she got to the car she began to cuss under her breath but felt relieved she did the right thing. She couldn’t betray Sidney and she knew it. This was a sacrifice but he was worth every sacrifice to her. There’s no way she could give that up.

As she drove home through the snow she couldn’t help but think about how she just gave up her dream career here in Pittsburgh for a boy who she knew she loved but didn’t know if he felt the same way. How pathetic could she be for making a life altering career like that. She was torn about her decision, she knew it was the right thing to do and she had to keep telling herself that.

When she got back to her and Sid’s house she let Marty out quickly and headed straight to her room where she could throw herself on her bed and cry for a while. She was left alone in a dark, empty house that was so full of her problems and the one person she needed to comfort her was nowhere to be found because he was going to be on a plane soon.

Funny thing was that Sidney was stuck in an airport. Flurries in Edmonton were preventing the team from getting home like they were supposed to last night so their flight got delayed to this morning. Everyone was scattered throughout a private room for the team and staff to wait semi-patiently. The boys were either on FaceTime with their families or sound asleep and the coaching staff was in a corner going over what they need to work on when they practice next.

Sid on the other hand was sitting alone listening to his music thinking of how he could pass the time. He was missing Bri a little bit so he decided to do what the others have been telling him to and google her. He found her professional job profile come up first so he clicked that link and started breezing through her articles until one caught his eye.

She wrote about the Penguins event.

Seeing the title caused Sid’s heart to drop through his stomach and onto the floor. He couldn’t wait for the link to load so he could read it. He couldn’t even hold his tablet steady because his hands were shaking so bad with nerves about what she said. His eyes scanned through at rapid speed and he couldn’t get to the end fast enough.

Go figure he finished as the team was boarding the plane so he couldn’t even take in what he had just read. She betrayed his trust, he hurt her to an extent he never knew he could hurt. And he was going to have a hard time keeping his composure on this flight.

Flower noticed his tension and asked him what the matter was. Sid didn’t know to tell him or to just scream. So instead, he just handed over the tablet for him to read. Marc-Andre’s first reaction was, “I don’t get what’s so bad about that.”

“She betrayed me. I brought her as my date and she fucking used it as click bait and to get some gossip out there.”

“Sid, I can see why you’re upset but what she said was not bad by any means. It didn’t give any gossip or share any rumors or anything personal about you. Just about her experience at that kind of event. It’s not bad.”

“It’s bad enough for me to deal with. I can’t trust her and I never will again.”

Flower hung his head low knowing exactly the conversation that was going to happen when he got home. Sadly he couldn’t even text Vero to warn her about what explosion was going to erupt.
