The Roommate

Twenty Four

Bri hadn’t stopped crying the entire time she was home, only when she was asleep, although she was sure she was crying then too. She found the strength to take a shower although she felt so weak, and got changed into something that made her feel more normal. She couldn’t let Sidney see her like this, a blubbery mess.

Sidney on the other hand couldn’t care less if Bri saw him in the angry state he was in. He was furious with her and he couldn’t hide it. His hands were gripped tightly around the wheel as he drove home from the airport through the snow storm. As he opened the garage door her noticed Bri was home. That lit a fuse in him.

He swung open the door that lead to the house and walked immediately with his equipment to put it in the laundry room. He heard her footsteps coming from down the stairs to see him and he just grunted under his breath, slamming the door to the washer shut. He could smell the dinner she made for presumably both of them too, and that made him even more angry. Her presence just pisses him off at this moment and he can’t do a thing to help it.

When he walked out she had her arms out waiting for him. He noticed her swollen eyes that looked quite painful, but he saw through them. And she wanted to hug him, that flew Sidney off his handles. All she wanted was comfort from him, but she was going to get a vicious explosion instead.
“I’m so happy you’re home-” she began to sniffle and he immediately cut her off.

“How fucking dare you betray me like that! And you didn’t think I’d find out?” he exploded at her. Getting extremely invasive.

“Sidney, I don’t know what you’re talking about-”

“Oh quit the fucking bullshit. You know exactly what I’m talking about,” he scuffed.

“I honestly don’t.”

“You don’t remember making an article about the team’s event? Do you think I’m fucking stupid and wouldn’t find out? Just because I don’t use social media doesn’t mean I still won’t find out what’s put on there. You’re lucky I didn’t expose you to our media team.”

“Sidney, I didn’t expose any undisclosed information to the public of leak any details about it. I simply put my experience and how I felt when I was there. I didn’t even say you were my date!” she argued back. This is ridiculous, she thought.

“I brought you in hopes you wouldn’t comment on it. But the fact you had the nerve to even fucking mention the team pisses me off! You’re nothing but a fucking groupie ‘journalist’ who wants to break the latest fucking story!”

“If I really was one of those types of gossip junkies then I would still have a fucking job thank you very much!” she yelled at him, tears streaming down her face. He paused to look at her, genuinely confused by what she just said. “I got fired today because I refused to write gossip stories about you!”

For a brief moment he felt bad that she got fired but then it hit him, how did her boss know about her contact with him? “So you went around your office talking about us? Seriously? I fucking trusted you!”

“I didn’t! I got fired because I refused to say anything about you like they wanted! I willingly gave up my job to protect you and your privacy! Why don’t you believe me?”

“Because I can’t trust you Brianna. You fucking betrayed my trust!”

“Seriously?” she barely got out between the tears. She knew he was mad.

“You can’t tell me that you even went as a date, you went as my fucking roommate cuz that’s all you ever were!” Those words stung her heart to the core. Her arms were numb and she could barely stand straight from her weak knee’s.

“So you’re going to discredit everything we had because of an article that wasn’t even about you or bad?” she asked in a straight tone. He nodded firmly. “So my birthday, Marty, our little dinner dates, and all the time we had sex was nothing?”

“You were an easy fuck, as always,” he replied.

She took three steps up to him and got almost on his feet. “I can tolerate you being angry towards me and you're yelling. But you’re not going to talk to me like that.”

“And you’re not going to tell me what I can and can’t do in my house!” he yelled back, walking away from her. “Get the fuck out of my house! You’re not welcome here!” He walked towards his office area and slammed the door shut.

She sniffled a few times and turned to walk up the stairs. She was devastated by his words and how he wouldn’t even listen to her in the slightest bit. Her feelings were severely hurt by him, and he didn’t even care less. His defences were up and she knew that, but he was so unapologetic about it.

She packed her things as quickly as she possibly could, and made sure to collect all her items carefully. Maybe he was overreacting, but she no longer had a draw to Pittsburgh so why bother staying? If he wanted her gone, then she’ll be gone.

She started walking down the stairs with the first of her suitcases, making sure to leave a loud thud when it hit the wood flooring. She wanted to make her grand exit well known. He could hear her moving her things and was relieved she actually believed him. She wasn’t stubborn enough to put up a fight about it.

Normally he would go help but he needed to cool down before seeing her again. He sat at his desk with his chest huffing and puffing, feeling like he was about to have an anxiety attack. When he thought he heard the last of her items he decided to check out what she was doing. He walked out to see all of her stuff piled by the door leading to the garage and Bri starting to load her car.

“You’re leaving?” Sidney asked.

“You told me I’m not wanted here, and I don’t like to stay where I’m not wanted. You asked me to leave so I’m leaving.”

Her response was cold and slightly shocked Sidney. He didn’t think a girl as nice as she could be this bitter. “Oh I see. Do you need help?”

“I got it, thanks.” He watched her stubbornly pack her car and started to feel bad that she was actually leaving. But he knew it was what was best for them both. He couldn’t trust her, so why feel bad now? “Well, here is my key,” she said, breaking him from his mental tug of war.

“Oh, perfect, thank you,” he said, accepting her key from him.

“Well good luck with the rest of your season, you’ll kill it.”

“Thank you. Drive safe.”

“Thanks,” she said turning to get in the car.

They both felt a huge ounce of pain in their chests, knowing it shouldn’t end this way. Yet somehow it is.
