The Roommate

Twenty Five

She cried the entire drive home after their fight. She stayed her last night in Pittsburgh with Mia who held her tightly and consoled her about everything. If it wasn’t for her friendship Bri would have crashed on the highway from the grueling six- seven hour drive back to her parents house in Toronto.

She’ll never forgive him for how he handled the situation, yet no matter how much she might regret what happened between them, she will never regret her decision to not reveal private information about him to the public.

She knew what that kind of thing can do to a family first hand, especially going through that with her dad. She will always hate that that was his reaction was that poor when she lost her job to protect him, and be unforgiving towards him for that.

It’s been five weeks since Bri left and Sidney has not been the same since. His playing abilities have dropped substantially and he’s been as depressed as ever. It’s heartbreaking for others to see him in this state. They know the fight was bad, but only the two of them know what actually happened.

And as if Sidney couldn’t be in any worse of a mood, he has a game in Toronto tonight. Knowing her dad was a former and legendary Leaf made him slightly nervous in the event he rubbed shoulders with him in the hallway. Sid was sure he knew what he did to his daughter. And to be fair, he deserved a punch in the face, he will always admit that.

Little did Sidney know that he would have a few more surprise visitors there besides his parents. A few of the wives went home to Quebec for a week or two and decided to catch a game in Toronto on their way back to Pittsburgh.
Sidney took to the ice for practice that morning and did his thing like normal. Of course he noticed Bri’s dad, since he was chatting away with Mario who decided to make the trip to see the game as well. Nerves were starting to sink in that he very well could get punched in the face.

Bri on the other hand was walking around to the stands where some of the family were watching the practice to visit some old friends from the Burgh. “Bonjour ladies!” she yelled up the stairs when she saw Vero and Katherine.

“It is so nice to see your smiling face!” Vero cheered, running down to hug her. “How’ve you been!?”

“I’ve been okay! How have you ladies been?” she asked, sitting down next to the familiar faces.

“Good, what the hell happened between you and Sid?” Katherine asked. “I couldn’t believe your messages when you sent them.”

“Yeah, it was a great day wasn’t it.”

“So he actually kicked you out?”

“Yeah, flat on my ass during a snowstorm. I mean, I knew he was mad, but he wouldn’t listen to a damn thing I had to say. I voluntarily lost my job to protect his privacy and he thinks that because I wrote about an experience I’ve technically had before. I couldn’t believe it.”

“We all know Sid’s very private about his personal life, but I never knew he’d be that aggressive about it,” Vero said very disappointed. “Are you okay now?”

“Yeah I guess so. I’m just getting over it you know?” She knew she shouldn’t be upset about them being done, because they never were anything, but she was taking it as a breakup.

“So what brings you here for the game?” Katherine asked, trying to change the subject, knowing she was upset.

“My dad is actually getting an award before the game and is doing the ceremonial puck drop tonight,” she smiled, knowing that she’s going to have a very uncomfortable run in with Sidney in front of the arena and North America.

The girls mouths dropped, trying not to smile at how uncomfortable this is going to be. “You’re lying!” they both yelled, covering their mouths.

Bri just laughed and shook her head, “Yeah. Of all the games this one had to be it.”

“Have you even spoken to him since?” Vero asked.
“God no! You think I’m going to talk to him after all of that?”

“Well you never know,” she blushed. “I can’t wait to see how it goes tonight.”

“Oh, you and me both.”

**At The Game**

Sidney was doing his pregame ritual while waiting to attack the ice to warm up. He was always a little nervous when he played in Toronto, especially knowing the draw Hockey Night In Canada has in Canada. Even though he knows the diehard fans are here for their team, they’re also here to see him, and he has to give them a good game.

The pressure was on.

Bri on the other hand was nervously awaiting to take to the ice for a completely different reason. She’s been in front of these crowds for years, but there’s only one person who can make her nervous, and that’s Sidney.

Warm up was over, and they both assumed position. Sidney knew what was next. The ceremonial puck drop, the national anthems and game time. He remained focused on the task he was about to do, win a hockey game. Adrenaline was pumping through his veins. He was prepared.

But what he wasn’t prepared for what he was about to see on the jumbo screen and who was about to walk out. Bri’s dad was being honored. Fuck, was all he could think. Meanwhile behind him, all his teammates had their eyes wide and stared at the screen in shock. They all figured out who her dad was months ago and they couldn’t believe Sid’s horrible luck. Sidney’s fear started shooting through his body in fear what might happen after the game if they cross paths since he knows he won’t do anything in front of all these people.

Before he knew it he saw Bri walking out looking absolutely stunning. He hair was pin straight but accented her edgy outfit so well. His eyes couldn’t stay off of her. He watched her as she shook the hands of the people awarding her father, the way she interacted with her family and the way she put her dad’s ceremonial jersey on. His teammates on the other hand immediately stared at each other in shock and fear of how Sidney will play. They know how this could affect him.

When he was called over he skated to the opposite side towards her sister first, following with her father and congratulated him. Next was her mother and then it was her. “Congratulations,” Sidney forced a smile to say, deep down his heart was broken while shaking her hand.

“Thank you. Good luck tonight,” she forcefully smiled up at him.

“Thanks,” he replied, skating to her side and posing for the picture.

He knows this picture will definitely come back to haunt him one day, just like the image of seeing her tonight. The only thought he was going into tonights game with was how could he have let her go, let alone forced her out the door.
