She Was The Friend He Needed

Chapter One

Pittsburgh: New Home

It was a few weeks before training camp would start but I was already moving to Pittsburgh not only a new town but country after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins to play hockey. Hockey has been my life forever

I would be living at Mario Lemieux house, he was one of my hockey heroes growing up and now I was going to be playing with him on the team he owns

I got off the plane and when I got to baggage claim there was Mario waiting for me with his son Austin “Sidney we are so glad you came in a few weeks early” Mario says

"Thanks for asking I am glad I have a few weeks to get used to the city” Sidney says

“I can't wait to see you play” Austin says to Sidney

“Maybe this week we can play a little together” Sid says to Austin

“Awesome” Austin says

"You just made his day” Mario says laughing

They headed back to Mario house and Sidney got settled over the last week he started to figure out the city and met some of his teammates

A few days before training camp started Mario came over to Sid part of the house and says “Hey you really haven't went out many places”

“Well I can't drink and not really into clubs or places like that “ Sid says

“I know but you need to meet people so come with me to my nephew hockey game he a few years younger than you but those boys might be some guys you can get to know” Mario says

"Sounds good to me thanks” Sid says


Cassie loved going to her younger brother Hunter’s hockey games he was pretty good he works hard at it and her dad has worked two jobs over the last several years to make sure her brother could play

Cassie has just graduated high school in the spring worked the summer and just begin her first year of college she was sitting with her mom

Mario, Austin and Sid had gotten to the rink where the game was Mario picked seats on the team side where Cassie and her mom were sitting “Hey Jenna where's Matt” Mario asks wondering where her husband, Cassie and Hunter dad was

“Working he was able to get some extra hours and couldn't pass it up” Jenna says

"Yeah how did warm ups look” Mario asks

"Good Michael looked really good he will be so happy you're here he said you would be” Jenna says of his nephew Sid was standing not sure where he should sit

“You can sit down none of us bite” Cassie says to Sid

"Sorry just didn't want to take anyone's seat” Sid says

“Oh sweetie you're among friends here sit anywhere you like with in our row” Jenna says

"Sid that's Cassie her brother Hunter plays on the same team as Michael, Cassie this Is Sid” Mario says

“Mario I think I know who he is hello hockey family” Cassie says

Mario just laughs

Is it ok to sit beside you” Sid asks

"Sure” Cassie says

"You know you don't really know me” Sid says

"Let's see you Sidney Crosby first overall draft pick from this year. You're the new savior of the Penguins that about right” Cassie says watching the boys come out

"Yeah but that's what the media makes everyone know you know I am just an eighteen year old boy wanting to living his dream” Sid says

"I know I just don't want to see the Penguins leave Pittsburgh I come from a hockey family if you can't tell” Cassie says as the game starts

"Well there something we agree on I don't want them to leave Pittsburgh either “ Sid says he was already loving his new city he called home now

They watched the rest of the game talking here and there at the end Sid says “can I have your phone number”

“You're not asking me out are you” Cassie says

“No I want to be friends with you, you treat me like Sidney from Cole Harbor not Sidney the hockey player everyone acts like is god cause that's not me I am the boy from Nova Scotia” he says

“I love to be friends then” Cassie says as she writes down her number and hands it to Sid

He needed a friend someone from here who got him for him and he thinks he just found that in Cassie but time will tell.
