Frozen Water //High School AU//
Sanctuary
Ever since Nicole first stepped foot in the pool she knew this is what she wanted. While other kids would go play football, hockey, or any of the other numerous sports in Germany, Nicole would be in the water. Her brother and sister would be on the field with their dad while their mom took her to the local pool.
It was this determination that helped Nicole accomplish her dream: the Olympic Games.
Germany isn't known for being a strong swimming country. That right is reserved for the US, Canada, and Australia. When people hear Germany they immediately think of football or luge.
Nicole was more than happy to show the world that Germans can swim with the "big kids". The "big kids" referring to the United States, Australia, Canada, and any of the numerous countries with multiple swimming titles.
Every time Nicole needed to think she always found herself in the water, whether this was a pool or simply taking a shower, the water was her home. It was this reason that after her first day of school, Nicole found herself at the local pool in Pittsburgh.
Everyone at the school seemed nice enough. There weren't any kids who were out right rude to her. The teachers seem to know what they are doing, and like the students seem nice enough. The group that took her in are all great.
There were 15 of them in total, Nicole was told, some were older or younger and had different lunch periods. At the table there 8 of them including Nicole, and while some of them seemed a little hyper, all of them seemed relatively polite.
It helped that there was another German in the group, well, his family was from Germany. He only lived there for a year while his father was playing hockey, but Nicole is going to count it. Though he does have terrible taste in football teams.
Nicole didn't know how long she had been in the pool, but she was aware of the doors to the to the pool opening. Followed by someone calling her name followed by a string of German.
"Nikki, Mom says it's time to go!" Nicole's twin brother Matthew called, coming up to the pool deck.
"Give me two more minutes."
"You've been here for an hour, time to go."
"Fine," Nicole muttered under breath, but once she looked at the clock realized her brother was right.
She followed her brother out to the parking lot where their mother was parked after drying off and changing.
"Nicole, how was school?" her father, Lars, asked as the family sat around the table eating dinner.
"It was alright, the kids seem nice, and the teachers aren't rude or anything," Nicole answered, pushing her potatoes around the plate.
"That's good, how about you Matthew?"
"It was great, and I really think the football team has a chance to be really good this year," Matthew said excitedly.
"Papi," The youngest of the Mika kids, Anna, asked, "the school seems really big."
Up until this year all the Mika kids were home schooled by their mother. Their parents felt it would be best it the kids didn't have the pressure of the German school system as well as athletics. As all their children took liking to sports at a young age, each looking to excel at their individual sports. Their route has succeeded with two of their four children, Nicole making it to the Olympics, and their oldest, Erik, playing to Dortmund BVB in the Bundesliga.
"Well Annie, most schools in the city are that big, and there is nothing strange about that. Did you enjoy your first day?" their mother, Katharine, explained.
After dinner Nicole retreated to her room. It would take a couple more days for her to adjust to the city. It was different from Dortmund, but also the same in ways Nicole couldn't put her finger on.
As she was getting ready for bed, Nicole checked her email to find an email from her brother asking how her first day of school was. She quickly replied to him, telling him about all the events that happened to her. Nicole was able to go to bed that night without the thought of mystery of the next day. For once in her life she wasn't going into something new.
Notes
Meet the Mika family! What do you guys think of them? How about a more personally look at Nicole?
Disclaimer: I am not a competitive swimmer, I have friends who are, but I have never competitively swam. I'll try to be as accurate as possible with both the sport itself and Olympics, but if you know more then me feel free to tell me. Any information is appreciated to get this as accurate as possible for you guys. I am also not fluent in German. So to avoid any confusion when there is another language being spoken, the words will be italicized. As always, comments are always appreciated.
